Thanks Amy ( and Eileen again ) think white flowers my favourite as we are surrounded by trees so quite shady - love them in the early evening when they almost seem to glow.
4 Mar, 2009
Never seen a white one before! Great detail in the photo.
4 Mar, 2009
Me neither. I assume it is hardy as you have it outside or is it that it is in a very protected spot?
4 Mar, 2009
Theoldgunner and Toto...very hardy..is by our pond, behind the bench.Has put on lots of new growth, and most importantly the bees love it !

Oh Lovely ... a white one. Never seen that before ...............Its lovely Bonkers
5 Mar, 2009
How long will it flower for BB?
5 Mar, 2009
Hi Jacque,it is now about 3 feet tall, but can reach to over 5 feet in time !
Thanks Hollyeves and Milky...it really is a beautiful delicate fuschia.
Dawn,it flowers from August right through to the first frosts, but bounces back the next year !
5 Mar, 2009
Does it have a name Bonkers....I wouldnt mind investing in a fuchsia that colour.............
5 Mar, 2009
Oh Milky the clues in the title ....x It is very hardy though and can be left out all year.Think it got its name from attracting the larvae of the Hawkshead moth a real giant of a moth with lovely colours.
5 Mar, 2009
That is so beautiful. I love fuchsias anyway, but have never seen a white one. As I am from the edge of the Lake District originally, and have visited Hawkshead many times, both as a child and with my own children, it is definitely one to buy. Where do I find it Bonkers? (Is there one called Beatrix Potter to plant alongside it I wonder).
5 Mar, 2009
Wow this is a real beauty ! Never seen a solid white one either ! I can't grow them here, they hate my hot, humid summers.
6 Mar, 2009
Thats a beauty!

Sorry Bonkers.......just looked at the flower not the title der!!!!!!

Hi Ginellie thanks for your comments - as you re in Surrey I searched and found Clay lane Nursery 3 Clay Lane South Nutfield Nr Redhill Surrey Tel :
01737 823307 Fuschia specialists so really should have or locate one for you .
As for Beatrix Potter she mentioned a red fushia in her tales but could only find tapestry and wallcoverings based on drawings she had done of fuschias , unable to gain any names of ones she drew and sadly none appear to have been named after her - that I could see. This seems a great shame as clearly loved her garden .
Do you not have a shady spot Flower or somewhere close to a pool or water ? they do seem to prefer a cooler spot .
Thanks B lourenco sounds a bit formal so may call you B L but then you may not wish to be known by a name reminiscent of our rubbish car industry !
Well done Milky knew you d get there once you saw it lol.
6 Mar, 2009
Careful Bonkers....I can be ferocious when roused.........
6 Mar, 2009
Oh dear sorry Milky wouldnt want that ..seem to be upsetting the ladies tonight .. perhaps I should have gone out in the garden tonight as Gilli and Catfinch suggested .
I may be gone a while ... x

Beautiful fuschia!

I went to look at mine, BB - no sign of life, but F. Dorothy Brown next to it has little shoots at the base. Is it too early to expect anything yet? Or is it another casualty of the cold?
7 Mar, 2009
I've noticed her vicious strak in the past Bonkers. Want's to kill everything that moves. Remember the poor Chafer. I've now started to look for houses well away from Essex.
7 Mar, 2009
Hi Spritz think that has to be a sign of survival dont you ? Wish any fuschia looked like this at present but it is reknowned for its hardiness - we have a lovely one called Fire and Ice red with dark almost black sepals ( think that the right term for internal petals ? ) that looks completely shot but will bounce back.
Oh Toto perhaps we should open a male retreat but then what would the ladies do without us ? That said I am beginning to wonder why Sids Hemaphrodite blog is so popular ..lol
7 Mar, 2009
Thanks Pp....: )
7 Mar, 2009
Thanks so much Bonkers, I'll give Clay Lane a call. My garden is very hot and sunny but I have a little pond so that's where it will go.
7 Mar, 2009
Good luck Ginellie, hope you manage to locate one.Ours is sited next to a bench over looking the pond !
7 Mar, 2009
That's a good idea Bonkers. I'll look up where the monastries are situated.
8 Mar, 2009
Never seen white Fuschias before. I love white flowers because they seem to glow in the evening which is why I planted white roses near our gazebo where we sit with a drink. Fuschias always look like little ballerinas in TuTu's to me :-)
8 Mar, 2009
LOL Toto
Agree The norfolk. We have quite a few white flowering plants for that very same reason...look magical at dusk !
8 Mar, 2009
i'm another one who hasn't seen a white fushcia before, i have quite a few but i am certainly going to look for this one its beautiful,
9 Mar, 2009
Thanks Sewingkilla well arent you the lucky one ? Kathleen Muncaster keeps the national collection for hardy fuschias in Lincolnshire so if you search hardy fuschia specialists ( like I did,not that clever lol ) lincolnshire you ll see where she is .
Fairly safe to say you can get it there .
Sounds like I ll be asking about varieties you have soon.

Well have ordered this from a shop on ebay, 6 plug plants for a fiver (inc p&p) can't wait to pot them up to bring them on for planting. I have a bush one hardy one of the old types little dainty flowers of pink and purple (don't know what it is it was a cutting from a dear friends mother), shrimp cocktail is another, Delta Sarah another am training that into a standard, Lady Boothby is the climbing one been a bit disappointed with that one though, the others were last years basket ones am hoping they have survived and will flower again this year.
10 Mar, 2009
Oh well done Sk,glad you located them ! We also have a few from last years baskets and tubs, which we hope will flower again. The year before had a couple that were not supposed to be hardy but despite being outside all winter they came back Having said that the weather this year has been much more severe,so will have to wait and see !
10 Mar, 2009
Yes these would be perfect in a moon garden..they would show up so nicely in moonlight...they are so pretty BB....I have never seen this sort of fushia before either...Jaque what a delight you in for...
11 Mar, 2009
Thanks Cat...it does look good in the evenings, and bears lots of flowers continuously late summer and right through autumn.........
11 Mar, 2009
LOL
I didnt know about that rubbish name but anyway, you can call me for my name, Bruno :)
13 Mar, 2009
Will do !
14 Mar, 2009
I found the comments on this Hawkshead fuschia very interesting, especially the fact that it very hardy as I have just received the one I ordered last year. It is very tiny at the moment and I have potted it up and have it growing in the greenhouse. Pleased to know though that I will be able to leave it out - it will give me a little more space for all my tender cuttings.
28 Mar, 2009
Should come on quite quickly Gardenan.Hope yours gives you as much pleasure as ours !
28 Mar, 2009
When Hawkshead was first introduced in 1972 the flower was described as green and white. I have had it for some years now and I find it an attractive bush growing to about 4 ft. tall.
A couple of other white flowered fuchsias in my garden are 'Sharpitor' and 'Magenanica alba'. Both totally hardy but beware the magellanica grows to 15 ft tall (here in the West Country) because being so hardy it rarely gets cut back by frost.

Thanks for all the info Lengie...certainly was unaware of date of introduction !
