Mine is still going strong, with plenty more buds to open yet, really pleased with it.

They are lovely aren't they Dd......yep plenty of buds to come too....next year I'll plant it in a better spot, where it can be seen more easily....:o)

Will you take it out to overwinter, or do you not have to in your part of the world? I have ordered 4 different ones from this fantastic website the national Dahlia collection, I have never seen so many different ones, I could have spent a fortune lol

They are great this year Dd.......I shall have to take the tubers out and wrap them in newspaper before I store them Dd....I'm in North Lincs......so its pretty cold and damp here in Winter. You'll be looking forward to yours coming for next year....:o)

After last winter we will be taking anything that could be tender out, where to put them is the problem.

Mine never grew this year :-(
But there's always next summer :-)

Sorry to hear that David, were they eaten?
16 Sep, 2009
Not unless the roots were. Dd. No shoots even came through the surface. But you've given me the idea of digging them up to see whether the tubers rotted or were eaten by vine weevil or anything like that. Thank You.

Your welcome David......

It surprizes me that U have to take out your dahlias. We are a zone 7 & can leave them in the ground.with a little mulch on top for protection? what is your zone?
19 Oct, 2009
We're in the UK Doon..., David in Scotland, me North East England and Dottydaisy in the south....I'm really surprised you can leave yours in, ours have a tendency to rot with the damp, so to take them out is best if they are special ones....:o)
19 Oct, 2009
I am so lucky then, but have to admit I lost 2 special one last year, I usually dig them up only every 3-4 years to split, pure lazy bones that is why!!!!!!
20 Oct, 2009
You know when you split them Doon....do you slice the tubers apart with a piece of growth on them or doesn't it matter?
20 Oct, 2009
I dig them up, put in brown paper bags, and hang up in the shed. I'm always careful to write on the bags what the contents are, too. My Dad used to just leave his out, years ago, but they hardly regrew the next year, and he began this practice, with superior results. I also find that, when I dig them up, they have produced new, small, tubers, which fall off. Have begun keeping every single one of them. In the past, I just discarded those in favour of the main ones ( idiot that I am!).
20 Oct, 2009
Good idea David.....I usually wrap mine in newspaper...then forget which is which....but hanging up in bags with names is just the ticket!....:o)

Dig mine up wash em off then dust em with flowers of sulpher then wrap em in cling film then bury them in a clamp filled with wood shavings, and i check em about twice each winter to make sure none rotting
