I am a totally new gardener and have a north facing wall which does not get any sun and I would like to know what I can plant in pots that will add colour.

Begonias (the big ones)will make a good splash of colour in pots. If you are interested in bedding plants some troughs of little fibrous rooted begonias will flower all summer whatever the weather. The shrub Euonymus fortunii Emerald 'n Gold will make an evergreen patch of colour, though with not even half an hour of sun the variegation might not be as bright as it might be.It will live happily in a pot for ages if you increase the pot size as it grows.
Look on the website of Long Acre plants. They specialise in plants for shade and will also give you advice. You haven't put your location on your profile, but if you happen to live in North Wales then Crug Farm Plants also specialise in shade but don't do mail order.

How tall is the wall, Wendy? I ask because there are some climbers which might give you a backdrop ,if the wall is high enough.
Welcome to GoY! There will be lots of help here.
