new pond part one

Hi Guys,
At last the day has come to start on the new pond, i feel like iv been waiting for ages.
First i had to take some water out and put it into a large plastic box then catch the fish without causing to much stress for them, one got tangled in some blanket weed so i quickly took the net off Baz and got him out before he died of shock poor thing.
Next Baz and joe took all the rocks and pebbles away, i couldnt help as i put my back out moving some rocks this morning grrr, so all i could do was watch.
Next was to take all the water out, but while doing this we came across a mother frog and babies, at least 10 or more.
I took each one and placed them into a bucket with netting over, didnt want them getting away or risk casper getting them.
Once all this was sorted out i decided we would take the frogs to where Baz works and set them free near the large pond there, better than waiting for everything to settle with the new pond, couldnt leave them all in that bucket for long and now they have a huge pond to live in.
Also our lovely robin was back and forth eating lots of grubs that had been under the rocks and pond liner, he was so close to us all, great to watch him.
Anyway here is a few photos to show you the progress, and tomorrow we get some topsoil to level area out before flat rocks are layed around to cover the lip of the new pond, also a few pebbled scattered then room left to plant some new plants around the edges

Baz and Joe put plenty of sand under and around the sides to so iv now got to get my water tested PH either tomorrow or tuesday and adjust that before i can put my fish in and plants, also once the pump has been cleaned that can go back.
My plants i will get pond socks which i didnt know about till Denise mentioned them, thanx for that as they seem better than baskets which can get quite messy, get my plants planted and placed around and in the pond, lily is sprouting new growth and iv kindly been sent some new pieces fron Seaburngirl, thankyou, just cant wait to see it all finished now, so inpatient really haha

I can understand your excitement San, I would be just the same, very impatient. But it will be worth it in the end. Looking forward to seeing the progress.

8 Apr, 2012

thanx paul, cant wait to redo my plants and get them put in on ledges, i must try and find some way of shading the pond to, to stop blanket weed forming , so much to think about with it at the moment :o))

8 Apr, 2012

All looking good Sandra, just as well you haven't got a hose pipe ban like us, as you would have had to put it on back burner for a while, send some pic's when it's finished ....

8 Apr, 2012

thanx Les.. your right with that, though my neighbour read if you have fish you can use hosepipe for pond to protect the fish , so apparently people are going out to buy fish for their ponds lol, what people will do haha, will post pics as i continue the project :o))))

8 Apr, 2012

It's gonna look great San. Don't forget to post some pics.

8 Apr, 2012

looks like you have some good options for shading - nice shrubs around it - :))))))))))))))))))))

8 Apr, 2012

I think that your pond will be lovely San, the baby frogs are so cute.....:0)

We read up on the internet but I think it was a week or two before the fish could go in, I think the water had to stand with the pump running to allow the chlorine to go, can,t remember the details I,m afraid

8 Apr, 2012

thanx sheila :o)))
yes paul i may move something and also was thinking of one of them small bridges across, another option ;o)))
Hi Pam at least a week, some say a couple of days but im leaving the fish out at least a week, will double check :o))

8 Apr, 2012

It will be great,San..and none of the hassle you had with your last pond ! ..that was hard work, wasn't it ? You are now an experienced pond lady ..:o))

8 Apr, 2012

Looking good San, I dont know if you can better the last pond and planting around it as it was gorgeous, i loved it but im sure you will :) keeping my fingers crossed that everything go's to plan..

8 Apr, 2012

thanx sandra i have to say it went easier and i could only watch with this back pain, but at least i can do the planting up and get the pond settled in with my fish and plants, not sure about experienced pond lady haha :o))
thanx Dee i think it will be nice to be able to get plants closer to the pond this time as wont be as many pebbles wide if you know what i mean, but lower growing plants i think as dont want to hide what i have already :o))

8 Apr, 2012

Looking good San, we left our fish in the temporary pond a full week when we did ours and a couple of years back when it had a complete cleanout, the plants were halved so some went in as soon as we refilled and the rest stayed in temp accomodation with the fish, ours are huge and we never lost any so yours should be ok, you do realise the frogs will still come back home, lol..
Well done Baz and Joe, when its in you can leave the rest to Sandra, she`ll like that bit, exciting isn`t it, enjoy your planting San and looking forward to seeing the next stage, I have to say the robin is looking very stern in the pic, are you sure the workers were doing it right..

8 Apr, 2012

its coming on a treat Sandra. Hope your back recovers very quickly. Take care and I am looking forward to the finished pond.

8 Apr, 2012

8 Apr, 2012

Looking good...hope your back will ease soon. It will all look lovely when it's finished :)

8 Apr, 2012

oo looking good already Sandra:)))

8 Apr, 2012

I like the shape of your new pond Sandra. It all seems a lot of work, but it's going to look lovely when completed. I'm glad you found a new home for the frogs :o) And little robin keeping you company lol ...

8 Apr, 2012

Everything seems to be coming along great Sandra, pleased you managed to rescue the Frogs ! remember mine last year well sadly my pond is so small it froze up completely, when I came to clean it last week I found my Froggy stiff as a board clung to the side, he must have been trying to climb out awww! so only one little newt left;0{

8 Apr, 2012

thanx sandra, its going so fast joe being here, but he is helping and doesnt mind either :o))
thankyou scottish, just had hot soak which eases my back but will know when i wake up lol :o))
cheers michaella :o))
lol Hywel if joe hadnt been home it wouldnt have been a nightmare hurting my back then having to carry on, but looking forward to planting etc ;o)))
carole thats so sad about froggy, thats what happened to us a year last winter, solid ice and found at least 4 frogs in the bottom even though i have a log which they can climb out, but i guess they had nowhere to hibernate once out. so i was relieved to put these in a larger pond ;o)

8 Apr, 2012

Coming along very nicely San, going to look a real picture when it is all planted up, what are plant socks please?
good to have Joe taking an interest too. exciting times, looking forward to the updates.

8 Apr, 2012

DD - it's what your plants wear when they fancy going for a walk!! lol Seriously, I think it's sort of like a pond basket (that you sink pond plants in) but more of a sock than a basket

8 Apr, 2012

Always find this type of work exciting and rewarding, but not progressing too fast is the key.I can remember that impatient feeling to finish.......Will be great San,keep at it!!!

9 Apr, 2012

That is going to look lovely Sandra, hope you back gets better soon:)

9 Apr, 2012

Dotty, sheila is right its more a sock than a basket, so keeps the composs in better, not as messy it seems from what iv read, didnt know about them till Denise mentioned it to me.:o)
julia its raining today, but have my topsoil so joe is going to lay that for me once he has losened the other soil, i feel helpless with my back so will just give out orders lol :o))
thanx nana i hope so after all the trouble we have had over last two years with other pond :o)

9 Apr, 2012

Sorry to hear your under par,San.......always delegate,it's a good feeling LOLx

9 Apr, 2012

lol julia, im alot better this afternoon, rested my back and its feeling better, will still be carefull though.
not enough topsoil so will need more to level it off as to get the edging stones flat over the pond lip.
get my water tested tomorrow as well, see what the PH is :o)) x

9 Apr, 2012

The new pond looks great, I'm sure the fish will survive, goldfish are tougher than they get credit for. When we sorted our pond out last year we kept ours in their bucket (a large emptied filter case) with a couple of airstones running, then after a fews days with the pond filter running we put them into the pond again.

9 Apr, 2012

Looking great so far :)

10 Apr, 2012

thankyou Crv.. im going to put them back tomorrow, iv tested the PH and seems ok, also iv added something to get shut of the clorine, pump running and plants in place now, got some young plants to put in a basket yet, maybe over weekend, the Lad at pond shop said get them back as soon as poss :o))
thanx Pixi, ordered some more bags of topsoil, should be here tomorrow, then can place flat stones around and some pebbles, then go buy new plants woohoo :o))

10 Apr, 2012

Cant wait to see it finished! :)

10 Apr, 2012

me to pixi :o))

10 Apr, 2012

Very exciting Sanbaz :)

10 Apr, 2012

thanx sue, it is and cant wait to get finished, waiting for more topsoil to arrive, village nursery said they will drop it off as soon as it arrives, then we can get stones down and fishies in, i hate them being out to long in that small space :o))

11 Apr, 2012

Very, very interesting to read about your "adventures" with the new pond! I hope your back is a lot better by now as it's a terrible thing to have to live with backache!

Looking forward to seeing your pond finally finished & planted up.
