part 4 digging the new area

today turned out to be a warm sunny day and my son has come over for the afternoon and dinner so we got stuck in to some more digging,
im not sure if its getting easier or harder to be honest, and its getting me down a bit, taking so long and me and baz cant do alot at a time with his back and my useless wrists,
johnny started digging away a couple of small stumps left while i attacked the ivy which i love but the fence has to be replaced being so old and patched up over the years, i filled the green bin then had to stop,
then we started to move soil over so to start the right hand side, talk about double digging lol.
as we dug i hit what i thought was a stone but no such luck, i couldnt believe a patio of sorts under all the soil,
these had been put here my the past home owners, why would anyone put slabs down then plant trees on top of them grrr,
these were the big council paving slabs to so not easy to shift, but my son took 3 up which made 5 in all i think up to now,
so after pulling ivy roots, taking slabs up and digging i was bushed, wish i was 20 years younger,
feel like we have done so much but doesnt seem to look any differant,
do you ever feel like you could burst into tears,, well i did today
casper was enjoying being out with us till the slabs were being lifted and wouldnt stop getting in the way so i took him inside, didnt want one of them falling on him did i.
also little robin was watching in the wings for his supper, singing away merrily to us while working, as soon as we packed up he was down in the ground looking for worms and grubs, bless
so at least i got out there today, not sure when i will again, will have to gear myself up as its never ending feelings at the moment

Keep at it San, Rome wasn't built in a day. The more work/time you put in the more rewarding it will be. I can understand that it feels like it'll never get finished but it will of cause and anyway it's better to be out there in the fresh air.Just think to yourself how awful it would be if you had nothing to do, you'd soon run out of nail polish.

Sandra, take it day by day, I have had an awful day with Mum, when I called in earlier she looked at me for a couple of seconds before saying 'Hello' which was really strange, almost as though her memory had failed her. We,ve been trying to shorten net curtains but I'm about as much use sewing as a chocolate fire-guard. lol : o ) )

2 Mar, 2010

Aww Sandra, chin up, its a means to and end. I know how you feel though - that's gardening!! It will be well worth it. Casper looks happy out in the garden. Can he venture elsewhere yet?

2 Mar, 2010

You know the only time i miss not having a fellow around is when i need some man power, to do the jobs i cant manage.

2 Mar, 2010

Ha ha Carol, they do have their uses, occasionally.

2 Mar, 2010

your right aster and sorry you had to work, poor you ;o(
hi dawn im just impatient i guess and i feel angry when i cant get stuck in properly, a weakling lol, casper is going out now from saturday and just goes in the surrounding gardens, never far away, comes when i call him, he is enjoying it all :o) hows the kitties dawn

2 Mar, 2010

Hi Sandra, I'm so pleased to hear that Casper is happy outside and willing to come home :-) Sorry to hear your wrists are poorly and that Baz's back is sore, that must be so frustrating. The kittens are fine thanks, still running around and anxious to get out, but that will be another few weeks.

im so glad johnny is able to give me a hand but dont want to push my luck, you know what kids are like lol, joe been full of cold so wont ask him till he is better, will just do a little at a time , it will get done some time, baz going to change the fence panels there to, the concrete posts are there just a messy fence so having to chop all my ivy down, not even sure where it comes from our garden or neighbour at back, think it will grow again as so much of it either side,
better to be sure with kitties dawn dont want them getting lost ;o))

Oh you`ll be ok Sandra, you`ll get there in the end. I know what you mean though, sometimes the bigger jobs do get on top of you. When my daughter moved house her back garden was a blank canvas so she asked me to do it up for her. Oh dear, I didn`t know what I was letting myself in for. At one point we also found some slabs, though smaller than the ones you found. It took ages to dig them out but once we`d cleaned them up they looked as good as new and they now form part of their patio. The garden looks lovely now but at the time I nearly admitted defeat!

2 Mar, 2010

your right sandra its just when you get over one hurdle another slaps you in the face lol, but hoping most of the rubble etc is out now, just the bramble and ivy root to tackle further along :o( oh well i have to finish it now or leave a gapping hole hahah. bet your daughter was made up you doing her garden sandra :o))

2 Mar, 2010

does seem never ending San..but you will be surprised how it all stats falling into place. When Ray dug the area for our 2 year old pond he thought hew had hit ground level...then his spade hit something hard.It was the concrete base of a former outhouse. The air was blue ! Lol Will all be worth it in the end ! x

2 Mar, 2010

lol jane poor ray bet he said a few choice words hahah, by the time i get it done i wont want to do another garden ever again lol. im getting a few nice plants together now jane so should look nice when all in place with you know what lol

2 Mar, 2010

I know...spotted the gunnera..perfect ! Lol

2 Mar, 2010

lol jane wont see the garden when that beauty grows hahah

2 Mar, 2010

Looks really impressive - those large concrete slabs are the pits arent they. Some of ours in the last house had iron rods for reinforcement in them !"£$%^&*

At least you can think of it as a jolly good work out - cheaper than the gym and in the sunshine too!

2 Mar, 2010

keep up the good work.... your getting there.... i know how you feel as i have lung and muscle problems and cant do as much as id like to.....just have to do0 it on days when i feel ok......would be lovely to turn the clocks back wouldnt it...lol

2 Mar, 2010

thanx sarah i`ll do that hahah
thanx holly sorry you have them probs mine seem trivial now, but yes wouldnt mind knocking a few years off for this job :o))

2 Mar, 2010

you dont notice your pains and things when your out in the garden ... it takes your mind of it lol.... but i usually pay 4 it the next day.....but its worth it...

2 Mar, 2010

Must be really frustrating for you Sandra, but you're getting there won't be long before you're planting it up, been doing some digging myself today a new area in the wood, did have a bit of help from hubby on sunday though he scraped the surface, dug up a sink too !!!!!! used to be allotments, think the old man who had it buried everything, found bikes and all sorts, so now I've got the lovely job of digging up all ivy and bramble roots,(have had a bit of help from Fudge, champion stick chewer, lol) still at least there's none of the dreaded bindweed in this area, like you just want to get to the nice part planting.
Casper looks chilled out in the barrow, lol.

2 Mar, 2010

Sandra ,those slabs are a good find, have you seen the price of them? seems to me its coming on well, it just seems a bit daunting at the moment. You`ll get it sorted don`t get upset, get mad it gives you an adrenalin boost..LOL....
Caspar and the robin enjoyed it and so will you......

2 Mar, 2010

yes thats right holly i dont have pain till after the event lol
lol simbad yours is as bad as mine with ivy and bramble, once its out you can bet some grows back, bramble always does grr so will have to keep a check on it to make sure it doesnt start again, is the sink in one piece could make a gravel garden with it :o)
sue they are expensive yes might find a use for them somewhere, i will remember to get mad rather than upset lol,
casper loves the garden, even though he has been out most of the day he still wants to go out tonight but i dont want him out at night, not to bad in summer when lighter ;o)

2 Mar, 2010

The sink was in one piece Sandra but unfortunately was one with a draining board attached, lol.

2 Mar, 2010

Chin up San.....just think if you hadn't started, you're over the first hurdle now...and better weather is on the way........... Like you I've got lots of Bramble I keep trying to get rid of and the roots of a plant that I thought was Rudbeckia but isn't....it sends a strong network just under the surface of the soil and every year it grows back....:o( Casper there enjoying it and you got some smashing Robin pics.....:o)

2 Mar, 2010

San dont try to do too much at a time, otherwise it will get you down, slowly slowly catchee monkey as the old saying goes, you will get there in the end, we did and we were much older than you, in fact I wish I had been your age, will put some pics on one day and shock you!!! so take your time and enjoy the challenge.

2 Mar, 2010

lol simbad haha
thanx janey i feel ok today and am just going to tackle a bit at a time now, dare not let baz dig anymore cause he hurt his back last week, so i will soldier on like we do and at least i have satisfaction of knowing i made this happen, so looks like i will be like you janey and at war with brambles lol :o))
lol dotty a long time since i heard that saying hahah, but your right, will look forward to those pics to dotty,, thankyou :o))

Being dependent on getting help is difficult, Sanbaz, especially when you have been used to tackling all sorts of jobs in the past! I want to do some major changes in the garden this year (move greenhouse, replace shed, etc) - I know my lovely son in law and grandson will help but I would so like just to do it and surprise them, just as I could a few years back :)
Love your photographs of Casper and robin, brilliant.

3 Mar, 2010

thanx Gee, dont things change fast, we still feel the same age but the body says otherwise lol, swallow your pride and let them do it for you then you can enjoy ;o)) cant enjoy it if you laid up with a back problem or even something worse

3 Mar, 2010

You're right about things changing, Sanbaz - sometimes I think my daughter is my mother :)

3 Mar, 2010
