Half term Holiday.

The weather forecast wasn’t too promising for the school half term but when you have to make the effort you just have to wrap up warm and bite the bullet.

The Saturday was a family day but on the very wet Sunday I decided to clean the greenhouse glass. Well the rain meant I didn’t have to rinse the outside !

I didnt realise how dirty the glass had got. I then tidied up the inside [why does it get used as a dumping ground?]

Monday and Tuesday again very wet so I ended up doing paper work whilst the girls entertained themselves. But on Wednesday we had a promise of sun and to be honest it did arrive a little late but it allowed me to do a bit of tidying under the beech tree.

Cyclamen coum with Crocus. I love pink and purple together.

On Thursday I wandered down the side of the house and decided the holly just had to go. It is a male and apart from supporting the Jasmine it does not add anything to the garden. The bag of ‘rubbish’ is the prunings of the climbing rose ‘New Dawn’ done in the rain on Wednesday morning.
So before the axe…

Well a saw actually but you get the picture :o)

Timber!

Now it is at this point I think ‘Heck this now needs shredding/bagging’. So like a good girl I did that before getting to the rest of the bed.

I started digging over the bed when OH decided to dig out the now muddy bare path [damaged by the building of the conservatory] to lay pavers. He’s got them down at the front of the conservatory but then ran out of sand! Typically not like him not to check he had all the bits first.

The soil went on to the bed and then all I have to do is plant it up.
So what is in it so far:
Crocus ‘Pickwick and Vanguard’
Crocus kotschiana [autumn flowering pinky ones]
Snowdrops
Leucojeum
Colchicum ‘Waterlily’ [autumn flowering]
Lilium martagon
Aconitum carmichaelii [last years seedlings]
Corydalis ‘Pere David’ seedlings.
Thalictrum
A pink Geranium

This is Crocus ‘Vanguard’

This gives some idea of the bed size and I found a Hydrangea, that I had forgotten about, sprouting from the base very happily.

What else will I plant? Well that will be another blog as I think this is getting too long now, so I had better stop.

Back to school for the kiddies on Monday and back to work for me too. Then the sun will shine all day every day :o)

I agree its not been a very good week here either so had to make the most of the bright spells when they did appear, think we are all working in easy stages at the moment, I know what you mean about greenhouse dumping ground, I do that with my bottom one all spare tubs, trays, pots and bird food are stored in there, luckily I can get it cleared again ready for the pricking out stage.
You`ve worked hard on clearing that area and it will look good in the coming months, you know what I mean Sbg, those endless days of sunshine we are going to have, lol......

Some lovely Hellebores would look nice in that bed Sea.b. and they provide good cover too! My greenhouse is a tip too and so is the shed and garage!! Lovely blog and some good hard work achieved.

26 Feb, 2011

I applaud you for bagging up all that Holly ... nasty stuff to work with! If only we could have 3 or 4 dry days in a row ... sun and showers most days here. : o ((

26 Feb, 2011

Good progress made :o)

26 Feb, 2011

I am avoiding hellebores in here as I have them in every border /bed in the garden :o) Unless I find a really unusual one.

I a really pleased with the progress but need another 3weeks off work at least !

it always rains when OH takes time off work too hollyeves. Its a shame for all the kids though as they get fed up when their mates dont go out in the rain.

A busy week then - nice to be constructive and you have done a great job - sometimes it is a pain estimating how much sand is needed though - depends what strength you are mixing it to - I always end up with more than I need :D Love the new flowers - the ivy is great in the corner - I have put a big ivy in the corner and around the dead Cordyline. Apart from Thursday the weather was terrible though

26 Feb, 2011

the ivy is a native one and I pull bag loads of it out every year lol

26 Feb, 2011

I seem to be the last lover of it lol - I should marry someone called ivy I think :D:D

26 Feb, 2011

i agree its different doing work in a nice place rather than at work, i would be happy doing my painting with a cuppa in your lovely conservatory :o)my ivy is comming back after we took it all out last year to do pond, i couldnt believe it today when i saw it growing :o(, well at least i can control it now and not let it take over.

26 Feb, 2011

I like ivy in the right place too Paul. Conservatory is starting to catch the sun and is a lot warmer during the day too San.

You've accomplished a lot! I haven't! Today was supposed to be my day but the weather is going to be horrific so everything will just have to wait.
