Time to sit and stare!

At mid morning today hubby and I were sitting in the garden with mugs of coffee and my camera. I am so glad that I did, as we had an unexpected visitor rummaging around the ‘conifer bed’. Hubby spotted it first though I’d heard it first.

I put some broken peanuts down and if you are having trouble spotting it is in front of the hosta.

Yes it is a wood mouse. Its tail is much longer than its body.
We watched it for over half an hour scurrying about this bed. At the same time we spotted a couple of Common blue butterflies flitting around the Berberis grown from a berry of B. ’Hellmond’s Pillar’.
I tried a photo but it is a blue blur to the left of the purple flower [semiaquilegia.]

One settled to drink from the berberis flower but took flight before I could get focused on it.

Today seems to be a major day for greenfly to take flight. The birds are having a feast.
Also the polygonatum are under attack from the sawfly Phymatocera aterrima [specifically the larvae feed on it]

45 minutes later it was time for me to go to my Zumba class so that was the end of my sit and stare time.

I don’t often just sit in the garden but there was warm sunshine and a slight breeze so it was lovely.

Semiaquilegia, like aquilegia minus the spurs at the back of the flower.

Hope you have had a lovely day.

Lovely photos ans warm sunshine. Its raining here now, but I’m grateful for it. My back is sore so I’m ever so glad of a break from watering.

Lovely blog - it’s good to sit and stare on a sunny day. Those common blues are so fast: we have a couple in the garden but I couldn’t possibly snap them:)

Hi Sbg, the title of your blog reminds me of a poem I heard years ago, can't remember who wrote it though.
What is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare?-
No time to stand beneath the boughs,
And stare as long as sheep and cows:
No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass:
No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night:
No time to turn at beauty's glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance:
No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that mile her eyes began?
A poor life this if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.
Derek.

Great pics Sbg, its great what rewards we get when we just sit and stare.

there is elder in the garden less that 20 ft away so that doesn't seem to be too much of a deterrent 3d.

I am hoping to get better photos of the common blues one day ;o)

Lovely blog. What is life if we don't take time to sit and stare. Great photo of the wood mouse.

We have at least one wood mouse, who has been living under the twigpile we made, we sat having our Christmas lunch and watched him empty a full bag of peanuts, obviously storing them. He's still living there and pops out now and again to tell us he's running low on stock! Lovely photos!

Hi 3d, thanks for the information, I can't even remember how long ago it is since I heard it, the name doesn't exactly roll off the tongue does it, thanks again, Derek.

It's nice to be able to sit in the garden sometimes. It's something I rarely do myself ...

I often wonder what little eyes are watching us as we sit in the garden. Well at least you know one pair in your garden ha,ha!

Lovely blog Seaburn, I did spot the little mouse, cute little one, lots of the little blue butterflies here this year, no chance of a shot as yes they do flit about, lol, like you I have tried...
Lovely poem Derek, one of the only ones that I can remember the words....

Hi Sue, it isn't the words I forget, it's usually the poets name, some are easily remembered, others not ???, Derek.

Seaburn - I agree with Lincslass a lovely blog. Lots of butterflies around so they must be enjoying the heat. I have a number of hollies so assume some are the holly blues.
How great to have a little wood mouse! I saw a fat little ordinary mouse a few days ago hiding under the large bird bath on bricks in the middle of a small wood pile.
Ran out as I refreshed the water but sadly have not seen it since. We need to make more time to just sit and enjoy our gardens.
