New Dawn, my avatar image is very special to me. In my family home I grew up in there was this rose at the bottom of the garden. It was part of the planting scheme in all the houses in the street in 1936 when they were built.
All through my childhood I enjoyed its delicate pink colour, shape and scent. When my mum died and my brother inherited the house he said it would be going so I took cuttings. One took and I planted it against the side wall of our current home in 1996. So 85 years on it is still doing well. A few photos of it to follow.
The bud shape is a little quirky but the colour is described as silvery pink. The new growth is a lovely red colour and at this stage it is easy to bend horizontal and tie in.

The rose was first introduced in 1930 and is now one of the plants used for breeding many of the modern roses.
I have it planted with a purple clematis, C.Victoria. That is described as purple with magenta bar.
Being an old variety she does suffer from black spot but so far only a few leaves seem to get affected late in the season. Once it starts flowering it just keeps on going. For the last 8 yrs I have always had buds/flowers on Christmas day.

I planted it in my parent's garden when I still lived at home. It flowered a couple of years for me before I had to leave it when I went to Spain, someone in the family I think must have dug it up during the years I lived in Spain. 😞

It's beautiful and wow 85 years old and lovely memories 😍 my mom and dad have a peony that was my nan and grandads somewhere around that age too :-)

Thinking about it I have a heuchera from the late 30's or possibly 40's and a Paeony Sarah Bernhardt that I bought mum in the early 70's for 2/6- from good old Woolies. Brother didn't want the paeony so I dug it up and brought it with me. The heuchera is constantly propagated from cuttings and the leavings of vine weevils!

That is beautiful :) It is lovey to have such a nice physical memory from childhood, I am happy for you, and for your inner child. I wish I hadthough to take cuttings from some of the plants in my parents garden before they sold it. Long may your New Dawn continue to rise and shine. 💜🌹

One of my favourite roses I have it growing up and over the garden shed and against a boundry fence and they fill the garden with their scent.

I am pleased many of you grow this rose. I find flowers evoke/hold many memories for me and I am sure many of you are the same.
at my plant sales I often hear people say, 'my mum/dad used to grow this'. often that is what prompts them to buy. It also shows how good these older varieties are.

It's a lovely rose, SBG. I've had it in nearly all my gardens. I had to remove it in this one as I made the mistake of planting it with a row of very prolific clematises, and the pruning of it was impossible. I have no wall space big enough for it now, sadly. It is indeed a delicate silvery pink with lovely shaped flowers.
