To make Spritzhenry smile!

Glorious mild, sunny day here today, to decided it was time to give my protected shrubs some air.
Spritz recommended Loropetalum ‘firedance’ last year, when I was looking for plants with purple leaves, but added that it isn’t fully hardy. So this was my innovative(?!) attempt to shelter it . . . upturned hanging basket stuffed with straw, and kept firmly in place.
It’s survived! Well, it looks a little dishevelled – who can blame it – but I think given a little warmth and nourishment it should be fine.
A few snowdrops enjoying the sunshine . . . it’s a lovely 15 degrees today.
Hamamellis; Ill try to zero in next time. Not quite used to my lovely new camera!
Keep smiling Barbara, and we’ll all look forward to having you back in good health in March. :))

Thanks Gran . . . Morrisons is getting a good press here. Yesterday I bought a Primula obconica from them for £1.25!

Hi Sheila ... Lovely thoughts and photos. :o)))
23 Feb, 2012
It's not wonderful here today...mild but very strong winds and very grey sky. Still, I so enjoyed seeing your blog Sheila...as always! :)) x ....and I'm sure Spritz will love it too! :)

Thank you Sev and Terra! And thank you, Karen for your kind words, and I'm sorry you've got a grey day: it makes such a difference to how we feel when the sun shines. :))

Nice Blog Sheila, thinking about getting a Loropetalum ‘firedance’ myself, worth a little cossetting to get those lovely flowers isn't it ?
Do hurry up and fiddle with your Zoom ! Really easy to use. ;0))

Thanks Pimms - OK, you're quite right. In my defence I had the sun in my eyes, but I know I "could do better" lol.
Thanks Mavis - you got a good bargain there.
Thank you Pam!

Nice of you to think of Barbara Sheila :o)
I'm pleased your plant survived too ....

Lovely to see your Loropetalum being released to enjoy todays lovely sunshine. I enjoyed the day dividing and moving clumps of snowdrops, also stood and contemplated moving my Fatsia japonica its about 4ft high and as wide. Still thinking about it.

We had a mild, grey day so I was out tidying up. I like the basket idea!!!!

Well done its covering has protected it and with a bit of sunshine it will soon be standing proud, its a lovely colour,I must remember that one, the snowdrops look smashing under the tree, I`ve been pleased to see how much mine are spreading now.

See you in March Barbara.

Nice kind blog Sheila, your pics look good to me..& your shrubs..:o)

Sheila will you put the protection back on or is that it for now? we are still all fleeced up here, the plants look like ghosts, what ever happened to the sunny south, we have had three horrible winters, frosts and quite severe too. The snowdrops look good under your tree, have just planted ours under the silver birch.

Thank you for your lovely comments Hywel, Linda, Lincs and Joanella - Stroller you made me smile, that's a big task to think about!
Thanks Dotty. The straw-filled baskets are sitting in the greenhouse - at the ready if a severe ground frost is looming, but I am optimistic that they won't be needed again. :))
24 Feb, 2012
Well done, Sheila. I'm so pleased that protection worked! Thank you for posting this blog - it did indeed make me smile. I'm off for yet another nap now. I can't keep awake! :-((

Thanks Spritz. Well, I hope you're right! When I said "dishevelled" I think I was looking with the doting eyes of a mother to her baby . . . in fact it looks a little frayed. However, given sunshine and TLC, I may yet be lucky. :))
You do need lots of rest, so you'll just have to obey what your body's telling you. We're all rooting for you as you know, and looking forward to "after the op" almost as much as you. xx

I always wanted a loropetalum, but I don't think they would survive here. I'm looking forward to seeing what ingenious contraption you use when it gets a lot bigger:-))
25 Feb, 2012
Lol, Ba . . . good point! Maybe it will be the turn of my tubs? :))
25 Feb, 2012
My Loropetalum has suffered even though it was fleeced. :-((
26 Feb, 2012
You should have used a basket Spritz:-)
26 Feb, 2012
Now we're all smiling Ba! :))
Well, except for knowing Spritz's has suffered. The cold was exceptional wasn't it Barbara, but maybe it will still survice. fingers crossed.
27 Feb, 2012
It's not completely dead, so later on I'll cut back the dead bits. It's far too big for a basket, Ba! lol.
28 Feb, 2012
We've had such a mild winter too...good job I didn't buy any, I was so tempted:-)
28 Feb, 2012
Glad you've mentioned "cutting back the dead bits" Spritz . . . I was wondering whether that would be a good idea. But I'll wait until warmer weather. :))
28 Feb, 2012
Oh yes, I shall leave it alone until a lot later on. It'll just need a trim, probably, or it might even get new growth by that time. We'll see.
29 Feb, 2012
:))
How big does it grow when it's happy?
29 Feb, 2012
Hmmm...I suppose mine is about 3' tall now.
1 Mar, 2012
Wow - Mmm, must be happy then. :))
1 Mar, 2012
I'm a lot taller than that and I'm thoroughly miserable:-)
2 Mar, 2012
Oh dear Ba . . . how can we cheer you up?
2 Mar, 2012
Weeeell Sheila...it's a rather dull day here, so a little sun wouldn't go amiss, but failing that huge wadges of money:-))))
3 Mar, 2012
I'll send you some of my sun - it's back again today, Ba! :-))
3 Mar, 2012
We had some sun this afternoon....but more always welcome ta:-))

Isnt it beautiful today Sheila? I love your photos and that was a good frost guard there for your plant, good idea. I have planted a Pyracanthus today, yellow berry and a new passion flower, heres hoping they get a good start. They were bargains from Morrisons!!
