Wide skies and huge beaches of Suffolk

We had only been to the east coast once before – to Aldeburgh many years ago. So many people had told us that the Southwold area was “lovely” that we decided to see it for ourselves, just for a couple of days. I was also encouraged by an intriguing photo put on this site by Laversteve last year called “erosion”.
This is Kessingland, a few miles north of Southwold
The foreshore at Kessingland is like a wild garden or prairie ~ the sea is a few yards to the right, and a caravan park to the left
Sea Kale??
Maybe someone knowledgeable (like Steragram?) will know the names of some of these plants
The white flower could be Orlaya grandiflora
Looks like a Sweet Pea, with slightly different leaves
Grasses in the wind (a bit reminiscent of the grasses at Ashwood Nurseries, Stickitoffee??)
Think this might be a Tree Lupin(?) a bit battered by the wind
Next we explored further south along the coast . . . to Covehithe, where quite by chance we came across this beautiful ruin, with a slightly less old church beside it.
Then walked a long, long way down to the beach, but I was chuffed to discover that I could walk two miles :)
Masses of seabirds enjoying the lagoon
Driftwood embedded in the sand
As the tide was at a low ebb, we were lucky to be able to see the remains of a petrified forest at the edge of the sea, but I was so overawed that I forgot to take a photo (sorry)! However, these lumps in the sand like charcoal are also remains of very old wood (not sure if fossilised is the right term?)
The estuary at Southwold, or the “harbour” which is still very active with fishermen, who each have their own ancient hut, and where some sell their catch
Sign in the next-door village for Grandmage!
I can now confidently confirm that the Southwold area IS lovely, and will return one day!

It does look Fabulous Sheila, the sky in the next to last picture is lovely. No moths or butterflies in that wild flower patch ? You should collect the driftwood to make a sculpture....I will post one for you to aim at. ;0)

Thanks so much everyone.
Glad you noticed the sky (with the sunbeams!) in the next to last picture, Pimm's, and I did try pulling up a bit of driftwood, but it was embedded! I found a tiny piece though, which I shall place (artistically of course) with my bonsais. (My Mum could make sculptures out of wood - usually birds.)

Oh lovely pics. Sheila, your pics were better than mine especially the wild flowers on the beach there, beautiful. Thanks for the 'Walberswick' memory, was that little antiqie place open on the green there? That white house was on my 'dream' list by the way!! Lol. The old church looks just like the one in W'wick doesn't it? Glad you enjoyed your weekend, did you also find 'erosion', that was a lovely photo I remember!

Love all the pics Sheila, it looks a wonderful place. What a beautiful old ruin too ....if only we improved with age like some old buildings:-) It must be something to do with being able to see more of the natural world through and around them as they decay so the ruin becomes a lovely frame:-)

I enjoyed my visit to Southwold Sheila, thanks for taking me with you :)
Smashing pictures, lovely ruin and I probably would have tried to get a bit of that driftwood out too!
Pleased you had a good time and well done for walking the 2 miles...was worth it wasn't it?

Lovely pictures! My daughter lives fairly close to that area so, when I visit (usually 'out-of-season') we often walk along the windy shingle beaches picking up various interesting bits and pieces of fossilised trees etc. What a lovely break you had! :o)
