BAD NEWS TODAY

Got some bad news today from my youngest brother. Him, his wife and two young sons went to Lapland yesterday to see Santa Claus. His youngest son, Lucas aged 6, fell into a swimming pool (deep end) and had to be given CPR by a doctor who happened to be staying in the hotel. He was taken by ambulance with flashing blue lights to the nearest hospital where he was later transferred to Helsinki hospital ICCU with suspected pneumonia. Luckily, he’s pulled through and is now out of danger. However, they’re keeping him in hospital for now as they’re not happy with his bloods. Just needed someone to share this terrible news with.

Thank you all for your support. I don't know the full circumstances, I just got a brief call from Greig (my brother) telling my husband to go onto Facebook immediately. Apparently his mobile battery was so low he just had to make a brief call. We thought it was going to be happy photos of them in Lapland, but it was to inform us of the accident. They are now 600 km away from their hotel, have no clothes with them and no phone battery. This was a surprise holiday for the two little boys and was going to be a holiday to remember and for this to happen (apparently they had only just got there) is just a nightmare.

Thank you all very much for your concern. My brother works for a big advertising company in London (Saatchi & Saatchi) who have an office in Helsinki. His boss has told him if they've any problems, to contact their office there and they will help. He is fully insured, so everything moneywise should be OK. It's just the worry of it all. His wife is staying in the hospital room with Lucas and Greig and his other son (Ethan, 8) have been given a nearby room in the hospital, so they're on hand. Any developments, and I'll let you all know. Thank you all so much, my dear friends. X

Once again everyone, thanks for you support. The latest update is that Lucas has been released from hospital (he's fine now) and both boys still want to see Santa, so they're staying until Wednesday (they should have been going home today). A happy outcome which could have had such a tragic ending. No doubt when they get home, I'll find out exactly what happened. Again, thank you all. Sheila X

hi sheilar glad to hear your family are all back and alls well ,just loged on and read your blog.heres wishing every one a happy christmass.

Just to finish off this unhappy saga, I'll tell you the details as they were told to me.

All four of them (Greig, Jacquie, Ethan - aged 8 and Lucas - aged 6) were all swimming in the pool. Greig and Lucas had been down the water slide together but Lucas wanted to go down on his own. So Greig said OK and he would catch him at the bottom. He watched Lucas get out of the pool and was walking towards the slide. Ethan spoke to Greig and he turned round in the water to answer Ethan then seconds later continued to watch Lucas, except it was NOT Lucas he was watching, it was a different child. Lucas, in those few seconds when Greig's attention was not on him must have slipped into the deep end of the pool. Apparently a man had seen Lucas, thought he was swimming underwater, then suddenly realising he was in fact in serious trouble and was drowning, hauled him out immediately.

As the first aid team (or whatever they're called) could not find a pulse an English lady doctor gave him the 'kiss of life'. The rest you already know in the original blog above.

All of this was confirmed by CCTV and a full investigation was launched as the incident went on record as an A1 incident. There were two attendants on duty at the time, one was supervising a group of kids in the showers and the other one, having just completed his tour of the pool area, was returning to the CCTV room.

The 'goods news' in all this is that the hospital confirmed that Lucas' heart had NOT stopped, his pulse must have just been very faint that it wasn't felt.

My brother was so cut up about it all and kept blaming himself for the accident. I've just phoned him this afternoon and he slept through for the first time last night.

Thanks very much to all my friends on here who were, once again, very supportive. God bless you all.

Sheila

Oh Sheila, what a relief it's all over. It was nerve-wracking for you all....
I hope you all can enjoy Christmas now and that no more bad things will happen ...

18 Dec, 2011

Thanks for letting us know,Sheilar..as we were all concerned for your family, and wondered how it had happened..It seems like it wasn't really anyones fault, doesn't it ? just a very tragic accident that could so eesily happen to anyone with young children..He is a very lucky little boy,and thank goodness for the help at hand..
Hope your brother can try and put it to the back of his mind in the near future..X
