Final walk of 2019

Yesterday we drove to Arundel, parked up and took a walk from the Castle entrance, along the path by the side of the stream to a bridge, then turned round to walk back along the other side by the fields.
The Castle is closed until April but I must tell you of the time daughter-in-law took our six year old grandaughter for a visit in the Summer holidays this year. All was going well until little one said loudly, “I need a wee!” and d-in-law told her they would have to leave to find a toilet. A lovely volunteer guide whispered that she knew of a ‘secret loo’ they could use and proceeded to touch a piece of wood wall panelling to reveal a cubicle. When we asked grandaughter how she enjoyed the visit to the Castle, all she could speak of was the ‘secret loo’!
I love to scrunch through the fallen leaves on this walk, not a hope of doing that after all the rain that has fallen of late.
The wet conditions certainly keep these large Ferns happy.
Not sure what these plants are, also enjoying the damp.
The water must have been so very cold for these Swans, not that they seemed to mind.
Having walked as far as the bridge, it was time to turn round, the weather was turning misty and grey.
This stream has been known to dry up some years, but the flooded fields have overflowed into it this year.
So many Seagulls were enjoying the water …
The path alongside the river Arun is a lovely walk in the Summer, not so yesterday as far too slippy, but it was good to see some folk were out and about in their boats.
I wish you all a very happy new year, hopefully with lots of fine gardening weather to come!

Lovely blog Shirley, brilliant story 🙂. We took the Downunderlings there and the girls were delighted to find a hollow tree. You probably know the Collector Earl’s Garden there? Sarah Raven says there are masses of magnificent Scaevola in containers around the rill.
A very Happy New Year to you all.

Happy New Year to you Shirley. You seem to have managed to have a bit of blue sky, unlike our Boxing Day walk when it drizzled all day.

Loved the tale of your Grandaughter needing the loo.
Your photos are lovely too.
Happy New Year to you.

Sheila, I have just looked back to May 2011 when we visited the Collector Earl's Garden, lovely place. Must re-visit in 2020!
Siris, the blue sky wasn't around for very long. Back to grey again today.
Thank you Marjories, happy new year to you too.

Hope 2020 is a Happy and Healthy one for you both ,Shirley..:o) xx

Happy New Year Shirley. I enjoyed your blog. I would like some Winter heliotrope (Petasites fragrans) for my pond and brook banks :-)

I will try to remember to get you some Heliotrope at some point Dawn.. Its probably illegal to dig any up and I don't normally go out with a trowel, but who knows. Its mostly on roadside verges without footpaths but I do remember a secluded patch on the cliff just above Solva.

Oh Stera, that would be amazing, thank you. I googled and I can't find anywhere to buy it, I think of 'borrowing' from the wild as spreading the joy. ;-). It would be really good for winter colour for me :-)

Really lovely blog, Shirley! Looks and sounds like a fantastic place to have a walk. Beautiful scenery and a beautiful castle. Love the architecture!

Thanks Sandra, Karen, Chris, Dawn, Stera and Kate for looking in to this blog.
As today is forecast to be dry, I hope to turn the compost over (boring) and then sow some Sweet Peas in pots in the greenhouse (much nicer task!).

Happy new year to you Hb, may it be filled with many happy days in the garden!
Yes, I did get the compost sorted, it's in a 'Dalek' bin so I shovel it all out into barrows, then put it back in with scrunched up newspaper and card, seems to do the job.

Lovely walk! Definitely thick socks weather! I think the mystery flowers are winter heliotrope. There's a lot round here but I'd never seen it before we moved.
What a grand discovery the 'Secret loo" must have been- well worth making a note of... Thank you for taking so many pics for us.
A very happy New Year to you and yours.
