Suggestions for planting ...
Hello everyone, I hope you are all coping with the hot and muggy weather we currently have. A good thunderstorm would clear the air but one isn’t forecast … yet!
I have a border going across almost the width of the garden and, as a short cut through it, I step across these pavers.
The Ophiopogon nigra (black grass) has been there for a few years, but I find now I’m disliking it a lot, hence some has been removed already.
Do you think that Erigeron karvinskianus would look good as ground cover in this area?
I am looking forward to your responses!

Thanks Janey, I am finding it a pain to remove the rhizomatous roots but shall not give up! Is the Erigeron quite low maintenance as that's what I'm looking for.

Yes Shirley, that would be a very good idea, and once you have it, it will seed itself around. It’s very low maintenance in my experience, as I like mine very much and don’t do anything to it!
Geranium Bill Wallis would also look nice and is easy 🙂.

Erigeron would be so pretty, I have to agree. Maybe some low growing purplish pink thyme included in the mix? Crushed underfoot..lovely fragrance. Spreads nicely and softens an edge too.

I agree with all the above. Can’t say I like the black grass very much. Lamb’s Ear, Stachys lanata would also do nicely there, makes a nice silver contrast with other plants.

Shirley, I've posted a couple of photos of the Erigeron which has popped up here without my permission, but I'm not complaining! Should be perfect instead of the black 'grass'
I agree with Kate pink Thyme is very pretty and would be a good companion for the Erigeron.

Sheila, that's really good to know, thanks so much.
Kate, now that's a great suggestion, thanks.
Josie, another good suggestion so I'm glad I asked the question.
Julia, I have just seen the photos you posted for me. Too kind ... :o))

I agree with all the suggestions. There is also a pretty little annual 'Fairy foxglove' or Erinus alpinus to give it its scientific name. I can send you seed or small plants if you fancy it.

Yes Erinus alpinus is a very pretty colour … good thinking Eileen.

Eileen, that's a lovely looking plant and if you do have some to spare, yes please!
I have just soaked the area where those pavers are in readiness to remove more black grass tomorrow.
Would it be best to leave the area bare until late Summer/ Autumn for the Erigeron, Thyme etc. to be planted?

Good luck if you decide on the Erigeron, it has died every time I've tried it. I've given up now.

Oh Hywel, that's a shame. Is your soil not suitable for it?
Photo added to show how bare it now looks!

Would be lovely Shirley. Look out for Erigeron K ‘Lavender Lady’ it is just a bit softer with its lilac blooms. But the ordinary one is very much a winner too!

Thanks Karen, good suggestion.

To answer your question, as I’m sure you know, Shirley, anything in flower will not like being moved/transplanted. But if you have rooted cuttings they can be planted out as long as they have plenty of root.
The exception is a grass like Melica or Hakonechloa which can be moved at any time given a good drink!

I agree with all the above, I think it will look lovely Shirley. Good luck.

Thanks Callie ... I am so pleased the black grass has gone now ... I was beginning to dislike more and more!

Good luck Shirley_tulip with what ever you decide to plant.
I like all the ideas above.

Hi Shirley, I have just found this by going on "garden blogs" which has been happening a lot recently.
I don't get notified and another time I do.
I think whatever you decide to put there will look better than the black grass!

Klahanie, I am still pondering over what and where to plant things!
That's not good, Rose, you will have to click on Gardening blogs ... :o)) The black grass is probably suited to a pot or as an edging on white gravel/stones, which I have seen before and liked a lot.
20 Aug, 2024
Yes, that would probably be better Shirley.
21 Aug, 2024
Rose, it's the best I could think of!

Yes Shirley I'm sure it would fill the spaces and soften the edges of the pavers. I have it here and I wouldn't be without it..
