What's in a name?

Do you know the Greek legend of ‘Narcissus’? There once was a young man named Narcissus whose beauty made everyone he met fall in love with him. A nymph, Echo, did fall madly in love with him but he ignored her, breaking her heart. Nemesis (the god of revenge) put a spell on Narcissus to make him fall in love with his own reflection in a pool of water. He stayed there gazing at himself in rapture until he died, after which the gods kindly turned him into a flower – a Narcissus.

This started me thinking of flower names which have been ‘borrowed’ over the years by parents to call their children by.

I’m not sure that Narcissus is one of them, though!

Here are some that come to mind – there don’t seem to be any male names from flowers, unless you can think of some – I’m not counting latin names here.

*Rose or Rosie

Daisy

Lily

Daphne

Iris

Poppy

Jasmine

Amaryllis

Camilla (Camellia)

Heather/Erica

Hyacinth

Marguerite

Veronica

Violet

Viola

Marigold*

I know there must be others – and celebrity children get some rather unusual names, too – how about ‘Apple’, ‘Willow’ and ‘Tiger-Lily’ just to start you off thinking!

But I can’t imagine anyone calling their new baby ‘Convulvulus’ or ‘Cowslip’, can you?

Peaches is another one Spritz, brilliant blog, great thinking and great pictures,

21 Nov, 2010

No I can't lol nor Echinofossulocactus :O
Male names don't suit flowers either do they - like Hywel lol

Another one is May. - I mean the May flower not the month :o)

That was great !

21 Nov, 2010

I can only think of ' St johns wort' or 'good king henry' but thats not really what you mean ooorrrr 'sweet william'?

21 Nov, 2010

Basil is one as is Robert [herb robert or is that cheating?] My brother taught a boy called Sage!

21 Nov, 2010

i was thinking of peaches too
i googled it and found blossom and tamara which is apparantly the hebrew name for palm tree?!
lovely blog ~ thank you!
my cat is called Mint -y does that count?

21 Nov, 2010

Would (Column Catus ) count or (Bunny Ears) or (Tom Thumb Catus) or (Tiger Orchid) count.

9

21 Nov, 2010

Hazel - a tree, not a flower though!

21 Nov, 2010

Boys' names (but for trees)....Ash (Ashley) and Rowan. It's a bit cheeky as it's not flowers....but you are so right as there do not seem to be any flowers with boys' names! Maybe someone will come up with some though :)

21 Nov, 2010

Holly ,Myrtle but they are tree,s as well.

21 Nov, 2010

Hywel & Pam thought of good ones...but I think the others are a bit cheat-y - they're not flowers. Johnjoe is being very creative! :-))

Sbg - I should think that Herb Robert could 'slip in', but Basil? Not a flower...sorry!

Oh dear - that poor boy called 'Sage'...it's almost as bad as calling someone 'Fennel' or even 'Sprout'. LOL.

21 Nov, 2010

The blokes' names only come in with the Latin names, don't they, and usually as a suffix, after their discoverers or famous planthunters/naturalists? I would always associate flowers with the ladies, especially with them being so closely related to the "Language of looooove!" LOL! It is also less usual to find a variety/hybrid named after a man. Having said this, Lonicera "Graham Thomas", Hemerocallis "James Marsh" and Fuchsia "David" come straight to mind. :-)) Many Thanks for this thought-provoking post, Spritz! X

21 Nov, 2010

I really enjoyed this Spritz.....and as for 'sprout' that made me laugh so much...:o))))

21 Nov, 2010

Well I suppose the name Herbert came from `herb`..or not as the case may be...lol! :o)

21 Nov, 2010

:-)) Bloomer!

Yes, David - I 'did' think of that, but all the 'girlie' named flowers have been blooming in my garden - so I'm afraid the male ones didn't get added, as I have no photos. Am I forgiven? Pleeeaase??? lol.

Sandra - I suppose so - but I'd have trouble with a 'flowery' photo of 'Herb' as well - unless it was Thyme, which I do grow.

21 Nov, 2010

Did you mention Marigold? :o)

21 Nov, 2010

I could add her, couldn't I! Thanks - hang on while I edit!

21 Nov, 2010

Oooo. Great blog Spritz. It certainly gets you thinking.....

How about Alyssa (alyssum) or Delphine (delphinium), Malva and Marigold?

Oliver is one boys name. What about Perry? Isn't that plant related too? No, Oliver would be from a tree and not a flower.

Well, what about Heath and Eric instead of Heather and Erica???

We could always invent some boys names....Rosid instead of Rosie. Violus instead of Viola. Camillan instead of Camilla?????

21 Nov, 2010

Lavender?

21 Nov, 2010

isnt love in the mist also called nigella?
not that i want to be reminded of that name ~ not my favourite cooking program im afraid

21 Nov, 2010

The Narcissus name is not just used for the daffodil. I used to wonder about Allium narcissiflora and anemone narcissiflora before I realised that it did not mean 'looking like a daffodil' but 'beautiful'.

21 Nov, 2010

That's interesting, Mr MB. Thanks - it really makes sense when you've read the legend, doesn't it?

Yes, Sticki - you're spot on with Nigella, I should have thought of that one, and Lavender, too, Mavis! :-)

Gilli - what fun! I'll exercise my brain too.

Errr...Dendrobium sounds a bit like a boy, do you think?

How about 'Bergen'(ia)??

21 Nov, 2010

How about Filip (Filipendula) LOL.
Cary? (Caryopteris)
Diane? (Dianthus)
Gail? (Gaillardia)
Clark? (Clarkia)
Leo? (Leonotis)
Paul? (Paulownia)
Rudy (Rudbeckia)
Hee hee hee...... :oD

21 Nov, 2010

Of course you are, Spritz, LOL!!! Am enjoying all the suggestions being put forward. The terms "blooming" and "blossoming" don't suit blokes, do they? Only one that I can think of which does, and daren't mention. LOL!!!

21 Nov, 2010

Just scraping the bucket----(Dan - del - ion)

21 Nov, 2010

My daughters name is Nargis, which is the asian version of narcissus

21 Nov, 2010

21 Nov, 2010

Lovely pictures Spritz and I'm guessing that they're used for illustration only and not out in flower at the moment! LOL How lovely if they were :o))) I was too late with my suggestion of Lavender as Mavis beat me to it so I'm off to put my thinking cap on. .....has anyone said Pansy?

21 Nov, 2010

Spritz....this is such fun :) I did figure that my trees would be a cheeky suggestion...will have to think up some others!

I don't know how you come up with such interesting blog topics....but please....keep 'em coming :)

21 Nov, 2010

"buttercup is only for a cow i think??? "....I don't know Sticki...Gilbert and Sullivan thought differently...."I'm called little Buttercup, Poor little Buttercup..."

22 Nov, 2010

22 Nov, 2010

I'm having a good old chuckle here about your creative minds - and I shall be singing Gilbert & Sullivan now, Gilli - all day, probably! LOL.

Sbg - I've never seen a Basil flower - what does it look like?

Keep thinking - I'll be back later! :-))))

22 Nov, 2010

They are sweet little white flowers Spritz. Need to pinch them out though or it goes to seed and is bitter

22 Nov, 2010

have we had Arum as a man, or how about Adonis, well maybe not,

22 Nov, 2010

Humph, it's not fair I was going to say Holly (obviously) and Marigold but I'm to late.

Why isn't there any male names for flowers? Well in my opinion any boy named after a flower wouldn't make it past his teen years! Lol

22 Nov, 2010

lol ,op haha

22 Nov, 2010

im sure you are right ian!

22 Nov, 2010

There's veronica for a girl.

I know it's a fruit, not a flower - Clementine - but there was also the Prime Minister Clem Attlee. What was that short for?

The only male one I can think of is franc-oa

Perhpas flower names are only for good girls and boys are knautia (naughtier)?

22 Nov, 2010

which flower name or plant name would you like to be called ~ and why?

22 Nov, 2010

Well, I'm already a Tulip, a Poppy, a Tomato variety, a Peony and a Rhododendron .......... but I'd rather be a gorgeous Rose!

22 Nov, 2010

I`ve just remembered a character in a book I read...Diantha. :o)

22 Nov, 2010

Hmmm...I'm already a Gilliflower which would be a dianthus, stock or wallflower. Also Cornish Gilliflower is an apple. I'm with Shirley Tulip though....I would like to be a gorgeous Rose too!!

22 Nov, 2010

i think i would like to be a little alpine ~ they are quiet but beautiful and so tough ~ growing almost through rock and coping with snow and ice but still surviving ~ thats what id like to be.
but i wouldnt mind being a garden gnome poppy ~ cos they keep changing colour and that would be fun perhaps i should be a monkey puzzle tree ~ spiky!?? or maybe a very tall cedar tree [cos i love them] but also i would be able to see into other peoples gardens!!!

22 Nov, 2010

Stricktoffee I am a male so it is difficult to get a name . Well maybe Johnjoe LOL.

22 Nov, 2010

Andrew! I already 'had' Veronica on the list!

22 Nov, 2010

sorry spritz ~ went off at a tangent ~ couldnt think of any more names ~ but havent given up trying. just wondering if laurel is a name?

22 Nov, 2010

Yes, I believe it is - but rather an old-fashioned name - I don't recall anyone called 'Laurel' for years!

No probs - we all go off at tangents! ;-))

22 Nov, 2010

How about Oliver? Or have I said that one already?
Huckleberry?...as in Huckleberry Finn.
Reed?
or
Ian (as in Valer'ian') LOL

23 Nov, 2010

You're all wearing your brains out! (Busy) Lizzie's a good one... and Susan/Suzie. Timothy? Is it?

Oh dear, Gilli! Valer'ian! LOL, LOL.

23 Nov, 2010

Well my brain was getting tired Spritz!! LOL

23 Nov, 2010

OH dear Spritz, I see you thought the name Valer'ian was funny, my name in Portugese and Italian is Valeria, Hey, could there be a plant named after me, !!!! I will come back if I find out anything,

23 Nov, 2010

Oh Yes, found two, a Chrysanthemum called "Foxy Valerie" and a Grape Hyacinth called "Valerie Finnis"

23 Nov, 2010

I think Spritz just found it funny that I said the name Ian could have come from Valerian, Yorkshire. I don't think your name is funny.

I've only ever found one plant with my name...Clematis 'Gillian Blades'...well, not the Blades part but the Gillian part....Of course, I had to buy one didn't I?

23 Nov, 2010

was only teasing spritz. Lol I have been thinking, might just change my name from Yorkshire to Foxy Valerie.

23 Nov, 2010

I'd be careful you might get some ' interesting comments '!! ;o))) Lol

23 Nov, 2010

Oh, Yorkshire - I'm glad you were teasing - It really was the 'Ian' bit I thought was funny! Honest! We'll have to tell Ian that he's changed his name, won't we! LOL.

I bought a Clematis 'Barbara' three years ago - she never did thrive. :-((( Isn't that sad. Boo hoo!

23 Nov, 2010

did anyone say Violet,

24 Nov, 2010

Errrr...I did! :-)) There's a photo in the blog of a little white one I have in my garden, Yorkshire.

24 Nov, 2010

there is a flower called ragged robin ~ so i think robin is ok ~ that can be a boys name or a girls name
i thought of that one at about 2 o'clock this morning!!!!

24 Nov, 2010

Sticki...I could keep you company...I was up til 4am....although I was on auto-pilot by then...brain out-to-lunch! Tired enough for sleep though, at last.

Are we doing birds now then? If so.....(blue) Jay...Jay is a name I've heard for a boy.

24 Nov, 2010

no i think its supposed to be flowers ~ but robin comes into both catagories!
the trouble was i had to be up at 5!!!

24 Nov, 2010

Oh dear, Sticki....not good. You'll be flagging by now...3pm in the afternoon...not much sleep for you :( Insomnia is just not fun!

I'll not put more birdie names up....lol I'm not rebellious by nature so I'll be a good girl from here on in...lol :)

24 Nov, 2010

very good ~ i dont like being in trouble either!!
up at 5 tomorrow too! should sleep better this evening!

24 Nov, 2010

sorry Spritz, I thought of Violet during the night, didn't realise you had put it in the blog pictures,

24 Nov, 2010

What a god idea.

A Danish writer have made a book called ´Marias planter´ (in englich Maria´s plants). Maria = virgin Maria.

A lot of plants are callede up by Maria. I guess you can find it in english names too.

24 Nov, 2010

I thought of a really good one at 3:00 am....but then I fell asleep again and now I can't remember it!! LOL

24 Nov, 2010

'Robin' is fine - I'd forgotten about the 'Ragged Robin'! And nobody's in trouble....lol.

I'm not sure, Hanne. I'd have to think about that!

25 Nov, 2010

Marigold....would be one
Rosemary....another.

26 Nov, 2010

There is a photo of a marigold in the blog, Gilli. I didn't add 'Rosemary' because I don't grow it...

You're still exercising your braincells, aren't you! :-)))
Yes, you're right - they are 'Mary' flowers! Thanks!

26 Nov, 2010

26 Nov, 2010

maybe its cheating but it made me smile ~ smiling is good!!? :o))

26 Nov, 2010

Oh, I agree! :-))

26 Nov, 2010

I think the conclusion is - when you know the flower, it's a probaby a girl's name; when you don't it's a male - Mister E flower

26 Nov, 2010

very good mr E ~ andrew.

26 Nov, 2010

26 Nov, 2010

26 Nov, 2010

27 Nov, 2010

ok, i give in!
i will try harder to think of another one.

27 Nov, 2010

:-)))))))

27 Nov, 2010

Well compost could have been a flower once Spritz.!! LOL

27 Nov, 2010

have we got Fern?

27 Nov, 2010

Oh Gilli! LOL. Do you really, really want me to edit the blog and add a photo of compost? ;-((

Sticki - I did think about ferns, but decided to stay with flowers. :-)

27 Nov, 2010

Okay Spritz....I won't make you do that...LOL

Uh-oh - Benji's back! LOL.

5 Dec, 2010

Oooops sorry about that. Ok, skip the black eyed Susan....

Johnny Jump Ups are a North American term I guess...they are the little violas that self seed all over the place...You never know where they'll "jump up".

6 Dec, 2010

Oh, is that what they are! Pretty little flowers - we can definitely add those! :-))

6 Dec, 2010
