New for old - MAGIC!

After Crazydi ‘nicked’ the idea I had for my next blog, (LOL – great minds think alike, Di!) I came up with a ‘cunning plan’ – and here we go!
I always plan my autumn container replanting so that it will go through into spring with very few alterations – for example, cyclamen don’t like the rain or cold, so I often have to replace them after they’ve gone over. However, they do sometimes surprise me!
This green glazed pot had a small Skimmia japonica ‘Rubella’, two Lamium and three white Cyclamen, to begin with.
The beautiful Cyclamen close-up.
Well, it wasn’t the Cyclamen that had to come out, it was the Lamium! They tried a take-over bid and I ‘swapped’ them for Primroses.
And then – in the spring? Magic! I had planted miniature Narcissi under the first plants, to flower in March! These are ‘Tete a Tete’.
Here’s Mum’s terracotta pot – planted up in the autumn with a small evergreen for height, Ivies, Winter Pansies and Cyclamen.
Unfortunately, those Cyclamen didn’t last – so in went some bright Polyanthus instead.
More magic come the spring – up came the Tulips and Narcissi to create a beautiful potfull!
Now take a look at my gate trough. I planted it with three little Skimmia, variegated Ivies to trail, and pink Polyanthus.
Ah – but the magic ingredient for the spring was the under-planting of small bulbs, to keep the picture alive after the winter. After the Crocuses, which were ‘Ruby King’, tiny Narcissi ‘Hawera’ flowered in here.
And now – the pot! It started off with a beautiful new Skimmia japonica ‘Magic Marlot’ – a dwarf, variegated leaved Skimmia. I planted rose-red Pansies round it.
They carried on flowering into the spring – alongside the Crocuses that popped up to join them.
Here’s the final spring picture…
…and a close-up of the Crocuses opening in the sun. They’re ‘Prince Claus’.
You may have seen my large blue pot before. This is the biggest container I have – and I love it! Due to its size, I can ‘layer’ the bulbs in it. I start with the biggest ones, close together, then the next sized ones, and finally, some small bulbs near the surface – all topped off with Winter Pansies or other bright winter flowers, with a central conifer (or grass) for height, as well as trailing plants round the edge.
Very early in the spring or even late winter – the first bulbs begin to show themselves. Here’s Iris reticulata ‘Purple Gem’.
The the Tulips flowered – I loved these, with their slightly paler edges. Their name is ‘Albert Heijn’.
And a little later, Narcissus ‘Pipit’ appeared in all her double glory!
So this particular planting lasted from September right through to April.
MAGIC!
Well, that was the ‘cunning plan’ I had – to show you a few of my containers from autumn 2008 and what happened with a little magic last spring.
And this year?
Well, I’ve changed the colour scheme in most of the containers – my large blue pot is planned to be a blaze of orange and cream next year – I hope the pansies ‘Amber Kiss’ do their stuff and stay flowering to show off the colours!
The Skimmias, Hedera and Conifers didn’t go to waste – I used them again in my containers this autumn. I potted them all up and kept them safe until I needed them.

Blimey Spritz you certainly know how to'cock a snoop' at winter, your garden must look almost as colourful as in summer.

Brilliant, Spritzhenry! Very good ideas for the spring! Love your colour combinations very much!

your pots a lovely Spritz. i like a good pot that looks good for a long time...i've been experimenting with different evergreens...i'm loving juniper 'prince of Wales' at the moment. it seems to survive neglectful watering in the summer and cope with the wind in the winter. flowery bits just cant cope with our winter winds...

beautiful and i love the blue/white crocus. I might see if i get some this year.
Iove your blog.

great blog Spritz!
.
lots of ideas there! I will certainly try to photograph some of my pots in due course.
do you feed your pots frequently? I guess they need it with so much packed in.
also, what drainage do you use in the pots - I use terra cotta and polystyrene
18 Nov, 2009
Yes - in summer, once a week. Not in the winter, though, as I don't want too much vulnerable tender foliage. Drainage - same as you, except for the smaller blue pots - they have extra stones inside, as they're easily blown over!
Thanks, everyone, for your lovely comments!

Wonderful, those crocus are something else !

You have colour for the autumn/winter, and also something to look forward to in the spring. I'm going to have to think ahead like this next year.

Some smashing ideas there Spritzhenry do you use the skimmia each autumn ?and just keep them safe in the summer or do you have to plant them in the garden as they do look lovely.

They are wonderful pots and plantings

They look wonderful Spritz :-)

Thank you. :-))
Mavis, yes, I potted the Skimmias up and kept them for this year. 'Magic Marlot' was the most successful - two of the others developed yellow-y leaves, and needed a dose of sequestrene. You could also plant them out - why not?

Gorgeous pots Spritz :0)

Doesn't take much to send me trotting down to the GC Barbara! Any excuse!! Just bought another plant from a market stall in my lunch hour....it's sitting next to my confuser now waiting to be taken home...it's a Heuchera 'Strawberry Candy' ...oooo such a pretty pretty little thing ;-)
19 Nov, 2009
Absolutely love every one of your pots, lots of colour to take you till spring.
19 Nov, 2009
Thanks, Carol! :-) Sarah - I think I've got that one - green with pretty markings??
19 Nov, 2009
That's the one Barbara - Nicely shaped lobed leaves with green edge and the rest of the leaf is silvery-green with very prominent vein markings that are pinkish on the young leaves and dark green on the older ones. On the lable the flowers are very bright pink. Will have to find a special home for this little beauty!

barbara they all look so beautifull, i wish i had underplanted my bulbs but didnt know enough and just put bulbs in my pots, they are starting to peep through, but are going to look a bit drab now ive seen yours lol

Thanks, Sandra - but please don't put yourself down. Your pots will look great in the spring, just you wait and see! :-)))

Oh, you clever you what majic you create. I couldn`t even pick a favourite there all so lovely. Can I ask are those erigerons around your first evergreen pot, and if they are where do you get the seed from, I`ve asked at so many garden centres and can`t find any.
22 Nov, 2009
Wonderful! :-)
23 Nov, 2009
Hi Stroller - yes, I have Erigeron karvinskianus just everywhere in my garden.
I inherited some of it, but I encourage it to grow along the edges of borders to 'soften' the look.
I've never had to buy seed, as they just seed themselves! I could try to pot some seedings up for you in the spring, if you like, or else buy a pot from your local GC and let them seed themselves!
Thanks, Anrea.

All absolutely stunning but I will pick a fabourite - my top favourite is the Iris Reticulata, what a beautiful little flower.
23 Nov, 2009
Thanks for the kind words......Yes, I love them too, Wagger - they are better with some shelter from the elements though - or the wind flattens them! I like to put a few in the pots in the open porch so they last a bit longer.
23 Nov, 2009
I love your pots - I have a patio area which is visible from the french doors and I always have lots of pots - usually in winter they are empty, not anymore! Great colour and great ideas - thanks!
5 Dec, 2009
Empty? Oooohhh dear! We can't have that, BL. Shall I come on over and we'll fill'em up together? LOL.
5 Dec, 2009
Yaaaay! I'll put the kettle on!

The planters look stunning. Well worth the effort in planning ahead.
16 Dec, 2009
I tried this autumn - but an animal has removed all the tulips from my containers - also from the borders! I didn't buy them to feed 'THAT'!!!! :-(((
