My favourite A - Z flowers.

Just for fun, I thought I’d look through ‘My Garden’ on my page and see if I could choose one favourite flower for each letter of the alphabet.
It proved to be a very difficult exercise! How could I miss out this one – or that? Oh well – I’ve still had a go and hope you enjoy looking at them.
A
is for Agastache Foeniculum. It’s a late summer flowering plant which atracts butterflies – and I’m pleased to see that it’s hardy!
B
is for Brunnera ‘Jack Frost’ – a wonderful plant for shady conditions. Its leaves shine out from under a tree, with blue flowers as a bonus.
C
is for Camellia ‘Adolphe Audusson’ – this was planted for our Ruby Wedding Anniversary, so it’s special.
D
is for Dianthus – I love them all, but this one is such a lovely colour. Its name is ‘London Delight’.
E
is for Erodium manescavii – a new plant for me this year, which has flowered in sun and in part shade. I love it!
F
is for Fragaria ‘Pink Panda’. I have several Fragarias now – but this was the first one I planted in the garden. It sends out runners and pops up in unexpected places. Sometimes, I get a strawberry to eat from it.
G
is for Geranium ‘Coombland White’. Well – I had to choose one of my geraniums for ‘G’, and this one is evergreen – I don’t have to worry about where it is in the flower bed!
H
is for Helleborus x hybridus. What a job I had to choose my favourite hellebore! I do love the double ones, though.
I
is for Incarvillea delavayi ‘Snowtops’. I had a pink one years ago – and was pleased to find a space for this beauty here.
J
is for Jasione laevis. This pretty little plant carried on producing flower after flower for weeks in the summer.
K
is for Knautia macedonica – which I chose because of its beautiful maroon colour.
L
is for Lavandula stoechas. This one is called ‘Regal Splendour’. My french lavenders have fared badly during the cold weather. I hope I get some flowers from this plant later on!
M
is for Muscari latifolium. It won’t be long before these two-toned spring flowers stand up amongst the pulmonarias again. They make a lovely ‘mingle’!
N
is for Nepeta nervosa ‘Pink Cat’. I enjoy the Nepetas so much, not only for their long flowering period, but because they ‘go’ with so many other plants.
O
is for Omphalodes cappadocica ‘Cherry Ingram’. Such a long name! This is one of the best shade loving plants that I have. The blue flowers glow and bloom for a long time in the spring.
P
is for Papaver orientale ’Patty’s Plum’. What a beauty Patty is – her ruffled silky skirts may not last very long, but she’s worth her place in my garden.
Q
is for ‘Queen Fabiola’ – a bit of a cheat, as before the regal name comes ‘Brodiaea’. These are bulbs – I try to plant a few more every year, as they are so beautiful in flower in early summer.
R
is for Rosa ‘Handel’. I had a bit of trouble getting a genuine ‘Handel’ – the first one I planted turned out to be a pink flowered rose! I have the real thing now, however, and it did kindly flower for me.
S
is for Scabiosa ‘Barocca’. I found this plant when I was choosing plants for the new island bed – it bloomed and bloomed all summer and well into the autumn.
T
is for Thymus serpyllum. This creeping plant is so low to the ground that it’s like a mat. The flowers are so pretty, though – and they attract insects, too!
U
is not a flower – it’s a sedge called Uncinia rubra ‘Everflame’. Such a wonderful colour- it shows off other plants and is a joy in the winter.
V
is for Verbena – there are several I could choose, but Verbena corymbosa is a spcial favourite. I love the colour and shape of the flowers.
W
is for Weigela ‘Carnaval’. I have three Weigelas now – but the beauty of this one is the different shades of white, pink and red in the flowers.
X
is for x Heucherella. Yes, honestly! That’s the correct name – no cheating. This lovely one is called ‘Kimono’. and it enjoys a partly shaded place to grow.
Y
is for….errrr…I haven’t got any plants beginning with ‘Y’. Oh dear.
Z
is for Zantedeschia ‘Captain Safari’. I have a white Zantedeschia, a hardy one, but I had to choose this beauty, really.
Well, there’s my floral alphabet – sorry it wasn’t quite complete! I hope you enjoyed looking at my flowers as much as I did – I can’t wait to see them again!

Mmmm, i love flower blogs :-))))))
Beautiful flowers and pictures Spritz.
15 Feb, 2010
Thanks for a lovely blog Spritz. So many beautiful flowers. Have you no Achillea in the garden as Achillea is Yarrow and would have filled the "Y" spot.
15 Feb, 2010
You have done well.
Some of these have gone on my wish list - notably the Uncinia rubra( I remember seeing it with you before ) , and Nepeta. I haven't seen a pink one before. Also you've reminded me of Omphalodes. I had a stripey one in my old garden but it died when I moved.
All you need now is a Yucca - or maybe not lol. Yarrow might be nice. I love it's feathery foliage :o)
15 Feb, 2010
Thanks - I'm pleased that you liked it!
Yes, Toto - I have Achillea - maybe I could edit the blog and add it! :-)
15 Feb, 2010
I really enjoyed seeing all those different flowers. I was particularly interested in the shade loving ones. Now your challenge for the summer, if you wish to accept it, is to find a plant for your garden that begins with Y :)
15 Feb, 2010
A latin name. Gee? So I'm not allowed Toto's suggestion? Hmmmm.....I reckon that might be a challenge too far....lol.
15 Feb, 2010
dont you have a yucca?
15 Feb, 2010
Nope - I don't like them, either! :-((
15 Feb, 2010
Another thoroughly enjoyable blog. Looks as if you'll be stuck with a Yucca if you want to complete the set!
15 Feb, 2010
Thank-you that was a great choice.
15 Feb, 2010
Lovely choices, love them all ,omphalodes is a new one to me have to look out for that for my new shady border:-)
I have a daylily called Yabba Dabba Do, lol, that wouldn't count though would it.
15 Feb, 2010
As ever beautiful choice of plants from a terrific garden, it must have been so difficult to choose.
15 Feb, 2010
Full marks Barbara, and a really lovely choice of plants aswell.
15 Feb, 2010
Thanks, Simbad - yes, find an Omphalodes c. 'C.I'. - it's a wonderful plant - you'll love it! There are others, O. verna and O. 'Starry Eyes' but 'Cherry' beats them, due to its larger flowers.
I couldn't really count your Day Lily....:-(((
Thank you Stroller and Carol for your lovely comments. :-))) It really WAS difficult! It took ages to decide.
15 Feb, 2010
lovely plants and pictures barbara, ive just got two heleborus but no name on them, will post another pic when flowers open, lots of your plants i really like so will be putting them on my list :o))
15 Feb, 2010
What lovely plants you have..... enjoyed your blog...... beautiful pics...
15 Feb, 2010
How about Ypsilandra thibetica, Spritz?
15 Feb, 2010
You beat me to it Gee. Brilliant little white flower for shade in the spring (see my photos on this site). You'll need to find a specialist supplier though
15 Feb, 2010
Oooh! Thanks - I shall remember that - I'll go and take a look at yours, Andrew. Aren't you two clever to think of a 'Y' for me! :-)))
Hi Sandra and Holly - I'm so pleased you enjoyed it! Which plants are on your list, Sandra?
15 Feb, 2010
Ok so I'll go and boil my head.
I do particularly like the Nepeta nervosa pink cat and the Thymus serpyllum. I'll try to fine the Nepeta butcan you tell me if the Thymus will grow in the border or does it need a wall or a pot as they normally like very well drained, verging on dry conditions?
15 Feb, 2010
I'm afraid I can't take any credit for it, Spritz, I just googled 'plants beginning with Y' :) !!
15 Feb, 2010
You shamless cheat Gee. Just the sort of thing I would have done.
15 Feb, 2010
I know, Toto, and I'm getting better at it all the time :)
15 Feb, 2010
I know, practice is needed. I've been practicing for many years and am almost proficient.
15 Feb, 2010
Well, your suggestion is a good one for now, Toto - because Ypsilandra is only on my favourites page as from a few minutes ago! It isn't growing in my garden, so I can't add it into the blog, can I? I haven't even started to look for one!
I could cheat and 'borrow' one of Andrew's photos of it, I suppose - but he might notice. :-S.
15 Feb, 2010
What a smashing blog, it was really interesting. I see you like pinks and blues too. I have that brunnera and I think its a lovely plant, the foliage shines out from its shady place under a large acer. :o)
15 Feb, 2010
It's difficult to choose other colours, I admit - I do have a 'hot' border in late summer to early autumn, though!
Yes - I really like the Brunnera, with or without flowers.
15 Feb, 2010
i would like erodium manescavii, incanillea snowtops, nepeta nervosa pinkcat, patty plum and barocca, all lovely and always more besides these, list is never ending barbara, every time i see a plant on here i want it lol
15 Feb, 2010
spritz - you might be able to get the ypsilandra on your visit to Long Acre Plants, it's the sort of place that might just have it
15 Feb, 2010
I'll look in the Plantfinder, Andrew. I was just going to do that!
15 Feb, 2010
Oh dear, Sandra - Garden Centre vouchers for your birthday/anniversary/Christmas presents?? lol.
15 Feb, 2010
is that the correct spelling andrew, im trying to see what its like but not coming up on search
think your right barbara about the vouchers lol
15 Feb, 2010
Yes - I've just found it at Long Acre Nursery, Sandra - try that.
I got stuck on the beautiful Saxifrage page!!! Then I 'focussed' and went to Ypsilandra. :-))
15 Feb, 2010
What a lovely set of pics Spritz, you have some wonderful plants in your garden. :o)
15 Feb, 2010
will do barbara, thanx :o)) found it, its very pretty :o))
15 Feb, 2010
A lovely blog to keep us going - thankyou ! I've just put Verbena corymbosa onto my shopping list. :-))
15 Feb, 2010
Thanks, and it's hardy. Mw, and I can recommend it!
Good, Sandra. :-))
16 Feb, 2010
A lovely plant catalogue, Spritz. Stunning flowers, but my favourite has to be that Uncinia rubra. :-))
16 Feb, 2010
You can imagine how difficult it was, David - choosing from some letters of the alphabet - 'C' especially! and 'G'. Glad you enjoyed it, though. x
16 Feb, 2010
I can. Compiling an A-Z of favourite plants could be quite "addictive", methinks. I couldn't get beyond A, as wouldn't be able to choose between our Allium or Aquilegia. :-))
16 Feb, 2010
A hardy Agastache...and it's beautiful..I'll keep an eye out for this. the Erodium is especially beautiful and unusual as well! Some truly lovely photos Spritz. I tried to think if I had a Y to offer you but I don't think I do. Would a Yew or a Yucca do? but not very interesting! I'm awaiting delivery of Ypsilandra Thibetica from Jacques Amand....I'll send you a photo if it flowers!
16 Feb, 2010
Yes, I was delighted to find new growth at the base when I cut the stems back last week!
Andrew suggested Ypsilandra - I have an order in with a Nursery that stocks them, and I'm plucking up courage to contact them for the third time in a week to add yet another plant - oh dear, they must be getting fed up with me - the crazy woman in Somerset who can't get her act together! LOL.
Thanks for the lovely comments. :-))
16 Feb, 2010
my pleasure!!
16 Feb, 2010
:-))
16 Feb, 2010
Spritz ,another smashing blog and a lovely way to pass away the dull wet days when stuck indoors and a bit fed up. Have to admit my wishlist grows every time I see a blog from you, plus I can now name a lot more of my plants as well..lol......
17 Feb, 2010
Enjoyed your blog Spritz, and love the erodium (wish list) I used to have the Readers Digest Book of Creative Gardening and played this game with my old garden. I had to have at least one plant from each page though I did cheat a bit. I have a new plant for Y...yushania, it's a bamboo and fully hardy and sounds lovely until "spread indefinite" oh well:-)
20 Feb, 2010
You can keep that Yushania, Ba - anything that says that is a no-no! I have ordered an Ypsilandra - haha - my alphabet will be complete, then!
I still have that book - it's nice to have a browse through it.
Thanks. Ll. I aim to please! Sorry about the 200 page wish-list though! LOL.
20 Feb, 2010
I don't wish to be picky Spritz, but I think you still need a 'Q'....brodiaea???? Couldn't you grow a little oak? :-)
20 Feb, 2010
Great blog Spritz - thanks - and lots of lovely ideas - 'cos I am in the planning process!! :0))
20 Feb, 2010
Oh Ba - I thought 'Queen Fabiola' would 'do' for 'Q'....I haven't got room for an oak tree - even a little one! lol.
Thanks, Sooze - I'm glad it's useful. :-)))
20 Feb, 2010
Your garden sounds utterly delicious.
21 Feb, 2010
Thanks, Ss. That's very kind of you! :-)
21 Feb, 2010
A lovely selection Barbara :-) But I think it might be time you started growing some Yams!! lol
Scabiosa ‘Barocca’ appears to be quite low-growing like thrift - is it?
23 Feb, 2010
Just looked to see all your lovely plants again Spritz and weigela carnival is a new one on me, it's flowers are gorgeous, what is its growth like? I've recently bought 'monet' ....well it looked beautiful in the brochure, just twigs at the moment though:-)
23 Feb, 2010
No, Sarah - Barocca grows to about 15" I suppose. It must have been the angle of the photo. Ha! I have an Ypsilandra thibetica on order - so no yams....sorry. lol.
Ba - that Weigela is a normal sized one - I prune it every year after it's flowered, and keep it at about 6' tall. I bought 'Monet' last summer, too - and it's like yours - but the foliage was beautiful! It should have survived....I hope!
23 Feb, 2010
Mine's in the garage at the moment:-)
23 Feb, 2010
Hiding from view, keeping safe, or waiting to be planted?
23 Feb, 2010
I've potted it up, but i'm worried about the weather, it's snowed again here:-( I hope it's alive:-)
23 Feb, 2010
Can't even pronounce Ypsiwhatisface..... ;-)
The Barocca is gorgeous...
24 Feb, 2010
Sarah - I just hope it survives - I think it will. Fingers crossed!
Now - say after me -
IP...SIL...AND...RA...
Three times should do it, LOL.
Ba - it should be OK if the compost hasn't frozen!
24 Feb, 2010
Ip sil dandruf
Ip sid andrum
Ip si dindilum
give up.....
24 Feb, 2010
LOL. Not good enough! In fact - utterly, completely hopeless! hee hee....;-)
24 Feb, 2010
No, the compost is fine I've only recently potted it and it's stayed in the garage, I wonder should I keep it a little damp??
27 Feb, 2010
i think you should, yes. If it were out in the garden it would be in damp soil, wouldn't it!
