…on Television…
BBC4 … 7 pm ~ 8 pm …
… The Wonder of Weeds …
Chris Collins reassesses the reputations of some of the UK’s least-loved plants …
… analysing their roles in the nation’s gardens and exploring their scientific origins …
… and for those who would prefer to watch Strictly Come Dancing on BBC 1 ..
The Wonder of Weeds is repeated …
… for the just-past-full-moon insomniacs …
at 3.10 am. Sunday morning BBC4 … 13th Nov.2011.… and is presumably also on i-player.
Here’s the i-player review …
Duration: 59 minutes
Blue Peter gardener Chris Collins celebrates the humble and sometimes hated plants we call weeds.
He discovers that there is no such thing as a weed, botanically speaking, and that in fact what we call a weed has changed again and again over the last three hundred years.
Chris uncovers the story of our changing relationship with weeds – in reality, the story of the battle between wilderness and civilisation.
He finds out how weeds have been seen as beautiful and useful in the past, and sees how their secrets are being unlocked today in order to transform our crops.
Finally, Chris asks whether, in our quest to eliminate Japanese Knotweed or Rhododendron Ponticum, we are really engaged in an arms race we can never win.
We remove weeds from our fields and gardens at our peril.
Enjoy :o)))

Naughty girl , you're just distracting us from Strictly . [Actually I would rather watch something else anyway !]
12 Nov, 2011
Let's all set our alarm clocks for 3.10 am... Lol.
12 Nov, 2011
Thanks TT, recording it on sky......boring footie on in my house. The budgie's got better taste than this lot! Lol x
12 Nov, 2011
Being of antipodean origins, Crocus budgie supports the Australian and New Zealand dancers ;o) Lol. x
12 Nov, 2011
Oh is antipodean but he supports Liverpool??!!!!

We don't watch Strictly Come Dancing either :o(
Just having a quick glance at GoY tonight - the time has flown.

Hello Hywel..
If you are awake at 3.10 am,
you'll be able to watch on BBC 4 ... Lol.. ;o)
12 Nov, 2011
Just watched it - Absolutely fascinating!
12 Nov, 2011
Thanks Terra, I hadn`t noticed it was on,( was watching Phantom of the Opera from the Royal Albert Hall) bliss...set sky plus so can watch at my leisure....
13 Nov, 2011
I haven't watched the programme yet ...
glad you enjoyed it, Peteg...
I've decided to leave this blog on GoY.
I'll keep a look-out for if this show is repeated...
and I'll add information to this blog if I see there are repeats .... or sequels !
Quite often, BBC4 programmes end up on BBC2.
13 Nov, 2011
Missed it again TT lol :o)
We'll probably see it on the iplayer.
13 Nov, 2011
Catching up with comments here ...
Hi Annella ...
I guess, for the Australians, Liverpool is antipodean ;o)
Rose and Joanella ...
I hope you get a chance to watch the Weeds programme.
Lincslass .. I hope you enjoyed Phantom... :o)

Hello Hywel ..
You weren't awake at 3.10 am ??? Lol..
13 Nov, 2011
Hi Terra
Just what we all need. I'm sure I'm not the only one suffering withdrawal symptoms at the lack of GW on Friday. I will watch it on catchup. For other people that need a gardening fix - there are a few good programmes on Blighty (repeats of course). Highgrove, Charles' garden is on at the moment - really interesting.
13 Nov, 2011
Darn it! I've only just read your blog so missed the programme. Both times! That would have been so interesting as I grow little else......... If anyone notices it scheduled for a repeat, could they let me know, please? We don't get the Radio Times here!
Oh, Goodness, I DO miss G'sW! There's a blank on Friday evenings, too. I'd only just re-acquainted myself with it too, having adjusted our skybox so reception allowed it that late in the evening.
13 Nov, 2011
This programme seems to be of interest to lots of gardeners and weed-growers, so I'll certainly add more details if there are any repeat broadcasts or similar ... :o)
13 Nov, 2011
Terra it was fabulous, we already knew it was as its the recording of the 25th anniversary performed at the Albert Hall, we couldn`t go there on the night so went to the Showcase in Peterboro , they filmed it as it was being performed and it was broadcast around the world, doesn`t matter how many times we see it, my daughter and I are avid fans, luckily our neighbours go out Saturdays as I admit we had it loud, lol...
13 Nov, 2011
Hi Lincs ..
I saw Phantom years ago in London ...
great production...
glad you enjoyed it ..
wonderful music ... :o)))
13 Nov, 2011
Many thanks for drawing our attention to 'Wonder of Weeds', Terratoonie. I watched it on iplayer this morning during my coffee break. Fascinating!
I am experiencing G'sW withdrawal symptoms too, watching it is such a relaxing way to start the weekend.

Hi Xela ..
Glad you enjoyed the Weeds show :o)
For me there are too many TV cookery programmes compared with the very few gardening shows. I guess it seems easier to provide a kitchen and to film food preparation, than to make footage of work done in a garden, with the problems of bad weather etc. !!!
If I see any more garden shows which might be of interest, I'll mention them on GoY :o)
13 Nov, 2011
Thanks, TT, but I am only just catching up - again! I haven't got any of the extra channels so I will try to see it on I-player sometime. I must admit I thought it was being presented by Chris Hollings and I've got a soft spot for him but I've just noticed it's Chris Collins. I'll still try to find time to watch it though :)
13 Nov, 2011
Hi Gee... I hope you enjoy the programme ...
whichever Chris is presenting ;o)
13 Nov, 2011
I watched all this prog. TT so facinating, who'd have thought WEEDS play such an important part in our world. Its a bit scary to think that we would have no insects if we eradicated all weeds and to think that we should celebrate weeds as they mean new life! I love that saying 'long live the weeds and the wilderness'. Thanks for telling us about this prog. Amazing info.
13 Nov, 2011
Hi terra, watched the Weeds prog on iplayer last night. Trouble is, I feel guilty now planting a Buddlea in my garden to watch the butterflies. I pull up all the little seedlings it produces though....:-D
14 Nov, 2011
Hi Troddles and Grandmage .. :o)))
I've just published another TV blog ...
... about a series of 4 programmes which will hopefully include gardening ...
"The Manor Reborn" ..
14 Nov, 2011
cheers Terra ;o)) x
14 Nov, 2011
:o))) xxx
14 Nov, 2011
It's as I thought - we don't get it. BBC Wales is not the same as the English regions. We'll have to see it on the iplayer :o)
15 Nov, 2011
Hello Hywel ..
I can't get i player on my computer ... When I try to access it, messages and warnings come up on the screen about updating, and I'm worried about losing internet ... :o(
15 Nov, 2011
You'll be able to see it on BBC One TT :o)
You could take your computer somewhere to ask about it ...
15 Nov, 2011
Yes, I'll have to ask someone techy about i player ...
... maybe my dentist will know.. LOL LOL LOL
Meanwhile, I'll wait for a repeat of The Wonder of Weeds on BBC TV ... I'm sure they will broadcast it again ...
15 Nov, 2011
Won't you be able to see it when it's on ?
or tape it maybe ?
15 Nov, 2011
Hi Terra, I`ve watched the prog today, it was fascinating,I really enjoyed it, now I know why Brynner kept attacking my Buddleja...
We first saw Phantom in London, did you see the sequel as well, it was good also...
