My Garden

Hi, this is my first ever blog so i hope you enjoy reading it and learning a bit more about me and my garden.
My interest in gardening started in April this year and i have been mad about it ever since. I dont really know what triggered my interest. We (my husband Mike and I) had had the garden for 3 years at that point and while some attempt to make it look nice had been made, it was never anything particularly important to me.
Anyway after being left a little bit of money by my grandma, I thought it would be a fitting tribute to use the money to improve the garden and have something to remember her by. And since then………i havent stopped.
Ironically my grandad was a keen gardener (his surnmae was Seed – how apt was that!) and i have fond memories of being on his allotment while he tended to his bees, and of picking raspberries off the bushes in his garden. Its only now i wish i’d shown a bit more interest and learned from him everything i could. Well i hope my efforts are now making him proud.
We moved into our house 3 and a half years ago and the garden was pretty much just lawn. Its 60ft long so we are now trying to make it much more interesting.
When i’m not in the garden, i’m either watching a programme about it, reading about it or talking about it. I’ve even started to dream about it. Is that normal?!
Anyway i have so much to learn and am looking forward to making friends on here who can guide me.
I have so many plans……just not enough time (or money).
I have started to take my own cuttings, am sowing seeds, and have planted my spring bulbs.
My mum, who has also recently become somewhat obsessed by her own garden, shares my enthusiasm, so between us we are driving my husband and dad mad!

Your garden is taking shape nicely, Tilly....you've got the bug as your blog says. You'll find lots of advice here on GOY and it will be fun to watch your plans develop.
It seems we don't take in a lot of information when we are younger (as you say when your grandad was a keen gardener) and it's nice that you've picked up on his interests...maybe in the genes!
Welcome to GOY and enjoy :)

Good luck with your garden. Maybe your husband and dad will become like you and start to enjoy the garden soon. - Or maybe it's best they keep out of the way so that you gan get on with it in peace lol
Anyway it's great that you have written a blog. I find it nerve wracking myself lol, although I have written quite a few.
Welcome to GoY, and Keep up the good work :o)

Welcome to GoY. Tilly, think everyone on here is a garden dreamer, it does become quite an obsession, but that must be good to have that kind of dream. We plan, scheme, dream, plant, weed and water and help nature by keeping a garden going, so give yourself a pat on the back and keep up the good work. Happy garden dreams.

Havn't been on GoY for 3 days, must have been busy......so welcome. You've been very busy in your garden since April. It's a lovely garden and a very maneagable size. Sometimes when you first move into a house you have other priorities. I see on your second blog you bought a lot of bulbs and I hope you have a lovely display in the spring. It's very difficult for me to pass a garden centre without turning in

Welcome to GoY, Tilly. Loved your blog and can totally understand your new found obsession, mine started at around the same time and has become all encompassing for me too. You have a really pretty garden, I'm looking forward to seeing over the coming seasons.

Sounds completely normal to me, anyway - when I first got the bug, I had 2 small children - I recall being irritated at having to stop gardening to get their lunch. Not to mention that I was still in my nightie, having gone straight out there as soon as I'd had a cup of tea and fed them breakfast... And then I'd spend the evenings reading plant encyclopaedias...

Welcome Tilly. I feel exactly the same way. I would love to have more time and money to spend on my garden. Yours looks really lovely considering you have only really been working on it for 8 months. Look forward to seeing it grow and mature

Hi and welcome Tilly. This is a great site and everyone makes you very welcome.
Normal is..getting up and taking you first cuppa around the garden..in nightwear naturally..and at 10am and 11am..can be worse if you are retired!
Normal is..buying and raising far too many plants, books on plants, seed trays, gardening tools and that "must have" wheelbarrow!
Normal is..having a car that has automatic pilot to every garden centre in sight
Normal is..falling in love with every plant that shows its nose on this site..some incredible pics that say "buy me, buy me"!
Welcome to normality lass and join this merry band!

Tilly, what a lovely way to become interested in gardening! As for your dreams, I can only empathise with you. I often wake up in the middle of dreaming about the garden! Is it 'normal' ....well, what is 'normal'? If there is such a thing as a normal person I haven't met one yet and if I did I expect I'd find them dull!
Your garden is looking great! It looks very private and nicely proportioned. The arch makes a nice entrance to the lawn and the gravel looks lovely, like an outdoor room.
I can see from the top pic. that there has been lots of planting done recently....should look fantastic next year when it's had the chance to get more established.
I think this could be the start of something that becomes an important part of your life! Congratulations on joining the 'mad but beautiful set'! :))
