August.. the quiet month..

a couple of my gardening books say august is a month for relaxing in the garden and enjoying the fruits of our labour.. lol, not in my garden.
it has rained for almost the full month here in Glasgow.
Cut the grass for the first time this month today, well attempted to, grass was so long japanesse soldiers were hiding in it thinking the war was still on. lawnmower wouldn,t cut it, used the strimmer till it ran out of wire half way through and had to use handshears to do the other half, oh the blisters..lol
Still, did manage to build a coldframe though, so chuffed with that.
it took me a while though, trying to dodge the wasps and trying to saw quickly with blistered hands.
I was even out in the dark this evening spiking and sanding the lawn, well got to take advantage of the dry weather when you can.
I got loads of seeds in the suttons sales and couldn,t wait, planted lots up already so the cold frame and mini greenhouse i,ve ordered will come in handy.
This site has been a great help and i,m glad i,ve found it, the questions section is great, I like asking questions, reading others queeries then googling the plants lol.. so thanks to everyone who takes time to answer the questions.

Hmmm .... i'd say we've had a good amount of sunshine and heat in this region, i think more than your area Spritz.
As for a quiet month .... maybe, i'm starting to make plans for what i'd like to do next though !
Next week, winter months, next spring ...... !!!!!!!

I feel your sorrow, we've had more than our fair share of rain for the last few weeks, I'm certain this part of the country is in no way connected to the rest of it LOL.
I would say it's more like autumn looking at the garden now :((
I'm already going to be moving plants in the front garden this week..... if it stops raining of course

Don't think the rain is going to stop over the next few days as we have a hurricane coming towards us apparently, from the atlantic. Hopefully it'll fizzil out before it gets here, but I think its bringing more rain with it. Here in Lancashire we have had a few nice weeks of sunny weather throughout spring/summer but the rest has been rain rain rain. My pumpkins have been well watered!

I sometimes think we only have three seasons here.. early winter , mid winter and late winter, but really it,s one long rainy season..lol
Glad to see everyone looking towards next years gardening. its like being a kid in a sweet shop looking at everyones pics... I want one of those... where could that go.. and ..i,ve got that, i,ve got that.

I believe the locals on Orkney reckon their year consists of ten months of winter followed by two months of bad weather!
Yes, we have not done badly for weather here in the southeast(ish) but I wouldn't say August was quiet in the garden with all the work I am doing in my 'bit on the side'
25 Aug, 2009
I've still got TONS of work to do on mine!!

When I lived in Madrid, Spain, the locals have an expression for their "weather", they say they have 10 months of winter & two months of "hell"! As I lived there two years I quite understand that as temps during July & August are in the 40s C! The winters are much colder than here in the UK as well.
July here in East Anglia was a washout but August has been a lot better. It seems that the remnants of Hurricane Bill will arrive at our shores tomorrow. Although heavy rains & strong winds are forecast for much of the country we may miss the worst of it here, near Cambridge.

thanks Balcony, i,d better go out and secure my plants, i,d heard someone else mentioning hurricane bill.

You'd better as Scotland & N.Ireland as well as the Northwest of England are forecast to suffer the worst of the storm.

A hurricane just means it,ll be a bit more windy than usual here.. lol

The SE of England seems to have had a summer - we certainly haven't had our share of sunshine here, Usernut!
I think you have had a lot more rain, though. Maybe you'll have an Indian Summer?? Shall I send you some sticking plasters for your blisters...you poor thing! :-((
