Getting started

My friend, Daisyco and I toddled off to the local GC yesterday and had a good look around (& of course didn’t come home empty-handed!). I have been in the back garden potting up my purchases and tending to some earlier gifts I got on my birthday.

Even the police helicopter came out to see what I was up to (lol) (they passed overhead as well but my hands were in potting soil by then so only this distant shot as they scoured the landscape for some crazy lady attempting to garden!

So…what to do first…..gather all my equipment together!

Two terracotta pots I got yesterday at the GC (largest one for my hydrangea and the other for my miniature rose bush)…

I got those re-potted and was happy to discover there are actually 3 miniature rose bushes (bonus) so as carefully as I could I separated them but decided to put all 3 in the one pot. They are very deep red blooms and I am hoping I’ll get through the winter with them.

I then placed my hydrangea into its bigger, brand-spanking-new pot (I got it all potted up and realized I didn’t really show it to advantage but the pot’s too heavy to move now!!…live and learn!)…

I then potted up the selection of herbs I also purchased yesterday…(I hope I haven’t crowded them too much…we shall see…)

I decided to leave the cotoneaster in the pot it came in….love all those berries and can’t wait til I can actually put it in the ground against the fence…

Here’s the jumble (grouping)….not satisfied with it but will sort it again…tried to add some of the rockery stones I was given but the effect is not what I was looking for…..

I’ve got more rockery stones so will likely re-jig all of this in the days to come as I can’t “create” any borders/rockeries of a permanent nature until our back garden is completely cleared.

On a happy note….a week today we should have the last lot of new fencing installed! Can’t wait! :)

The first step indeed J, nice healthy looking plants, hope that lovely brick wall is south facing..just the job for winter..Brilliant getting fencing done this week. It will feel more "your" garden! Before you know it the place will look green and zinging with colour.
Remember one woman's mistakes are another's idea of a brilliant job! Let it all hang out girl and go for it!

Unfortunately the wall is west facing, Tetra. It gets lots of sun in the winter months but a lot of shade during autumn/winter. Is this going to be a problem with where I've put my pots? I am hoping to relocate things once the fencing is finished next week but it won't be straight away. Flags to lift first and lots of digging when the soil is exposed.

Thanks for your kind comments, PP, San and Tetra....it does look as if things are on the move finally.

Joanella....this long box was thrown out of our stockroom when the new owners took possession of the business. It actually stood upright in our shop prior to refitting many years ago.

I too have thought about sprucing it up and planting it up....a project for another day....thanks for the thumbs up.

I like your pots. Terracotta looks much nicer than plastic, and better for the plants I think. You are very methodical too :o)

I've just noticed (too late to correct it now!!)....in my reply to Tetra I said we get lots of sun in the winter....but we don't get much sun against the back of the house....only in the other sections of the garden. Probably you'll have worked that out anyhow! lol

The front of my house is shady until the sun is going down, my pots do better out there winter and summer, simply because they don`t dry out so quickly, my fuschia`s do especially well, I like your enthusiasm W.lass, it will be good to watch your progress....

Thanks, Lincslass....I am enthusiastic and impatient. I suppose lots of gardeners feel the same....we have a picture in our minds of how we want the garden and have to be patient to bring it all about. I need more stamina as I can only manage 2 or 3 hours a day in the garden! We'll get there....I'll blog as we progress!

Thanks, Lins. The fencing has been completed and I am waiting for 6th December when the contractors will return to continue with landscaping.

Now I'm busy spending time settling on a design for the space. Lots of fun :)
