What is the hardest task you have done in the garden today? Feel free to answer below!
As you can see hubby is ignoring all jobs and needless to say, so am I!
My hardest task was getting the sunbed out of the summer house and then picking a small bunch of sweet peas and a few other flowers.
I am now looking forward to hearing what major jobs you have been tackling! ?

I cut down a berberis (Helmonds pillar I think) and dug the root out, it was a very straggly and ugly plant. I replaced it today with a Sambucus Black Lace. Silly day to do it really but once I started I couldn't stop :)

Picking a small bunch of perennial sweet pea . . . "that's all folks!"

Opened the door and window to the greenhouse ... mind you Michael did mow the grass which I am about to edge ... now it's cooler.

played in the shade with Lottie, no gardening oh and drank tea and tried to keep cool, no chance of the latter it has been horrendous out there.

I deadheaded the daylilies sat outside for a while , then our very heavily pregnant daughter called round so we sat inside with the fan on !!, the temperature read 41degrees on our patio thermometer, I like the sun but that beat me lol.
Rob and 4 friends went for a 10 mile walk, they must be totally bonkers!

Oh yes - now watered the pots (cooler and pleasant at 8.30pm) - and about to serve raspberries and cream!
19 Jul, 2016
Same here with the watering Sheila ... but I had to make do with a yogurt :o(

I invited friends to join us in the garden. Getting up from a garden chair after a couple of hours was very difficult. I managed to eat some raspberries and cream and the chocolate cake was exhausting.

This all makes wonderful reading!
Sheila and Shirley, starting the watering at 8.30 does NOT count in this competition - much too late and far too cool!!
Gee you have definitely worked the hardest of all of us so far, and deserve some of the raspberries and strawberries that have been enjoyed by most of the others!
Paul, this is such sad news about Paddy, he must be hating this heat. x

Ha ha Chris, but at 6pm I edged the lawn, dead-headed some plants and pulled up some Bindweed coming through from neighbour's garden (grr!) so I feel I should be excused, please nicely!

Now you tell me!
I am 'sort of' impressed !!

We had a lovely cycle run to Carnoustie to tick off the Oor Willie Golfer and we had to cycle through the golfers on the Senior Open Practice
A lot of the golfers have signed Oor Willies Bucket
Then we cycled on a bit and found a lovely seat to sit by the seaside.
It was bit cooler to cycle in morning but my afternoon it was ever so hot outdoors cooler indoors .
Even at 9pm patio doors were still open.
Just hope if rain comes today it does not stay.

That sounds a lot more energetic than I was expecting to read! Glad you had such a lovely day. We went to the Open at Troon last Friday but unfortunately chose the wettest day of the four!! Loved it though.

Wow that was hot yesterday 40c, like you simbad i love the sun but it can get a bit much , especially as one gets older ! and i am on the coast ! anyway i decided to go to the sea , at the end of the road and have a walk up our very short pier ( used to be the second longest after Southend ! ) there was a lovely breeze , which gradually got hotter ....so bought an Ice cream and headed for home where i got the umbrella out and 'looked' at the garden , poor Pebble's was too hot and hid under a chair most of the day , i had dishes of water everywhere inside and outside in the shade ! do hope Paddy is recovering too, and all the other animals ! ....today is just as hot , i have my Grandson trying to sleep here after a Night shift at the Hospital , back on tomorrow too , his next door neighbour is having the concrete driveway dug up ! what a job in this heat , well done to all you energetic people take it easy now ! anyway , keep cool everyone , it's not going to last apparently , at least the plants will be 'happy' , hose pipe out again tonight i think .

Still waiting to hear from bet, Pam....he said he'd ring today but hasn't.
20 Jul, 2016
Oh no Paul. How awful for you.
20 Jul, 2016
Well I did work hard on Monday even though it was hot but I was working in the shade at the bottom of my garden all day, oh and I gave Brynner a bath which he loved, however it did beat me completely yesterday, early morning I did the ironing and ran the hoover around but then I more or less flaked out for the rest of the day, it was an exhausting day even too warm in my shady half of the garden, apart from preparing evening meal which was very hard as mainly salad, pets were like me and didn't like it at all, when the sun moved to the front I watered the greenhouses and then walked around with my hosepipe doing the garden and all the pots and troughs ..
Oh Paul thats sad, we are in the same situation with daughters lab Morgan, we've had to ask for a home visit as we cannot get him in the car, they are coming tomorrow...
20 Jul, 2016
Linsclass and Paul, I am so sorry to read that both of you are very anxious at the moment.
20 Jul, 2016
Thankyou W'rose, sadly we lost Caspar(cat) only two weeks ago and Morgan was the one we were worrying about, he's 12yrs old bless him and we never thought he'd make it through the winter, kept hoping he'd go peacefully in his sleep but that would only happen in a perfect world, they can't tell you if something hurts can they....

Always remember ' Tears are nature's safety valve.
Never be ashamed of crying.
When you have cried, you will feel better.'

So sorry to hear of poorly pets , thinking of you xxx
21 Jul, 2016
Sat indoors as it was too hot in the garden. Had ice cream, (as did the cat), and then fell asleep for an hour.
Watered the acers and the alstroemerias in the evening.
A very lazy day!
21 Jul, 2016
It is very reassuring for me to hear that the very keen gardeners that join me on this site also have lazy days and find time to enjoy their gardens and eat ice creams! I don't feel quite so bad now.

I came home from work early to find OH just finishing hacking down the climbing hydrangea. He was very hot and he got sunburnt so it serves him right as I didn't know he was going to cut it down. grrr.
21 Jul, 2016
What is it with men and chopping things down!....
I agree with the grrrr?
22 Jul, 2016
Do you know, I was just about to put the very same thing! They can't help themselves somehow!!
22 Jul, 2016
My OH would not dare, lol. he does nothing in the garden apart from pushing my wheelbarrow when it is full to the compost heap. That is just how I like it too, he does enjoy looking at it and sitting in the garden for coffee and biscuits but has no idea at all about plants. lol.
22 Jul, 2016
nah my OH is very hands on and when his projects are 'drying/setting/curing etc' he cuts the grass/trims the hedges/pulls up dead lily stalks [complete with bulbs worth £5 each] etc.
I cant really moan as he does the hard landscaping when I need him too.
22 Jul, 2016
The hardest job I did was try to work in our greenhouse like office. It nearly killed all, of us it was that hot. Best week of the year and I'm stuck at work :-(
Don't think the dog was too impressed with the heat. Glad OH was home so he could keep an eye on him. Good news is the downstairs of our house tends to stay fairly cool so the dog can find somewhere to hide from it.

Is that not the reward for all the hard work that goes into looking after our gardens, to be able to enjoy the good days of sunshine [seems few and far between this year] with a cool drink in a comfy chair and relax?
I`ll bet that most of us also ponder improvements and tweaks while doing so, maybe also get up to pull the odd missed weed or old flower head too. So do not feel guilty about having a chill day in the garden is my reward :-) :-)

Well said Kev!
Unfortunately it is rainy night again now so sun beds are sheltering!

I've had to take poor Paddy to the vet's again today....a job that makes my heart sink. Poor ol' fella is getting old like us all!
I did also practice making some giant bubbles to entertain children next week!!but, no gardening, just sitting looking at it!(well, apart from watering the pots and greenhouse)
