I am still getting FFO’s (First Flower Open) on a couple of seedlings. The trouble is, I am using my own seedlings as parents to see how fertile they are, and the names can get to be very long. I have to use either the sdlg number or the names of the parents. As an example I can either say that the following is B-3#8 6T-103, or I can say it is [(Better Lucky Than Good x Hippie Crash Pad) x (Angel Fairy Tern x Judge Nancy)] x Michigan Nikki.

Then if I am just using 2 named flowers as parents, it is simply (Marseilles Watercolor x Full of Treasure)

I did have one of those crazy names open yesterday. It is a 4" DIP double that I am excited about. It is {Crystal Blue Persuasion x [(Bounty x Heavenly Pink Butterfly) x (Magic of Oz x Ashee Dashee)]} or as I think of the pollen parent WBR2#26

Since you never really know how things are going to turn out, compare that result which used WBR2#26:

For another one I used the same pod parent, but the pollen parent was (Summer Star x Heavenly Curls)

I used as pod parent for both, Crystal Blue Persuasion

The result for the second one, Crystal Blue Persuasion x (Summer Star x Heavenly Curls) was this:

No idea where that came from, and I checked to make sure everything matched.
This also happened with one that I registered last year,

And it’s pod sibling (Yabba Dabba Doo x Willow). This is understandable because Willow is a dark red.

If you are going to try making crosses, it needs to be done early in the morning. This means that some of the flowers you want to use may not be producing pollen when you want to do it, and if you wait until it gets very warm, the time will have past and few will form seeds. So you can either pick the flowers you want to use tomorrow when they have pollen and put them in the refrigerator until the next day, then let them warm up for 30 minutes before using them; or you can pick the flower you want to use, and let it sit in a sunny place for about 30 minutes, until it does make pollen. I did this today. Here is Solar Blue Angel on a rock wall getting warmed up:

The odds of making money selling daylilies is about the same as going to Hollywood. I do register the best, and have shared a few with people who have asked. It is easier to just share than to try and make a few euros, and there is a reason to get out of bed in the morning.

They are all stunning Wylie 2nd and 3rd such unusual colours to see. Interesting you can get pollen by the flower head after picking it off the stem.

Thrupennybit: I recently received the British Hosta and Hemerocallis Society journal, and it had an article on making crosses. All the magazines have that sort of article, and they all read about the same. There are never any tips where named hybridizers have come up with solutions to problems they have faced and have an answer that works for them. So I thought I should include tips on the way I do things.
Seaburngirl: It has taken several years, but my fields are getting full and there is a real need to thin it out. So many of the flowers look alike, it isn't that difficult to reduce the number. Then there are those that sit around and never get used, and aren't that special. I have found a good home for them - a friend takes them, but his space has filled up and he needs to thin out the ones he doesn't like so there will be room for more new ones.
Steragram: It's a good thing I did because I hadn't planned on having so many photos.
