Mid-January flowers

Just because it is winter, it doesn’t mean that it is all green grass and green trees.
Ever since the Hesperantha coccinea started flowering in November, it has remained in flower:
Even a Nerine is in flower:
I went outside this morning to see if a Ferraria had opened, they are fat with buds and should start any day. Instead I found that a Hermerodactylus tuberosus grey form had opened. For comparison, here is first the grey form, and then the standard green/yellow form.
Adding “color” is an Elephant Ear – Colocasia esculenta ‘Black Runner’:
And since no one can be sure about the future, I saw some plants I wanted from the UK and bought them before they become too expensive because of duty and phyto costs. Among them were 3 good looking Cordyline australis ‘Red Star’:
Then out back, the oranges are almost ready to pick!

What a crop of oranges. Do you prune your tree?

Who would believe it's winter with beautiful colours like these?

Pruning the tree helps to increase the number of fruits. It doesn't have to be done every year, just when the branches get too tall or the number of oranges really drops off.
My favorite thing to make with them is orange nut bread.
