Pretty walk from Balgowlah to Manly cove, Sydney

Hi everyone, what a cold, windy afternoon, and what could be better, I thought, than to go back to Sydney and take my lovely GoY friends on my favourite walk from Jims passed Fairlight beach to Manly cove.

Down the hill a little way, turn left and facing us, this pretty clapboard house with Wisteria beginning to flower in the early spring sunshine. Wisterias are very popular over there.

Across the road, pink and lilac Azalia blossoms, in the front garden of a very old Aussie bungalow.

Down the dip and we come upon what looks like a type of Iris? Not really sure, but it’s lovely….:)) Well, I’ve found out they are Dietes Fairy Iris grandiflora and very hardy! wish I’d brought some home.

Looking to the right, the view that will take us all the way down to Manly Cove…beautiful, isn’t it?

Another Fairy Iris, really unusual.

Then these beacon style amazing plants. They must be at least 12ft tall, with what looks like a type of Canna Lily flower. I’ll have to check out Australian flowering plants and then put in their right names! And they are Gymea Lilies, indigenous to coastal areas of NSW. The sword shaped leaves can be a metre long and the flower spike up to 6 metres!

Australian Grevillea, the wild birds love pecking at these
to reach the nectar dripping off the stamens. Very attractive to insects too.

Above us, a Black Cockatoo dropping bits of Banksia seed shell as he munches busily, not giving us a second glance.

Wow, what a vivid colour….stunning Azalia!

And deep crimson Bougainvillea

Lots of pinks, a delicate Azalia

Now we’ve reached the fern garden, with Tree Ferns and Hart’s tongues.

Ooh steady! Mind the Water Dragon there, sunbathing…:))

Here’s a little rock garden, with a very pretty flowering grass.

Look up and have a look at the view!

Here we are passing Fairlight Beach, I love the colours here.

Down the steps passed the Aquarium and Art Gallery and
a coffee at the cafe, I think we’ve earned it!

Back to Jims and my little friend who came by every day…:)).

Couldn't agree more with Carole. It's horrid here, though bright enough, but I've had a sore mouth and have retreated to the sofa with a lovely book and my doggies (they are on the floor, not on the sofa of course!!). Just taking a break from the book to check out Goy, and it's lovely to see your blog Janey. I've never wanted to go to Oz, and I have no rellies there, but I do have a dear friend near Melbourne, and when I see your lovely blog it makes me think that perhaps I will go....one day...maybe. :))

Thanks girls! I've just been checking the plants (which I should have done in the first place!) and will correct them later!!
Aw sorry you're not feeling too good Karen. No, I never fancied visiting Oz before Jim went there, the little piece I've seen though is fabulous and so interesting, I love the vastness, wild life and wildness of it!
You're welcome Gralew and Scotcat!

Already have £2 in my saving jar Amy....:)) I know I do wish I'd brought some home, maybe I can get Jim to send some over, they should do ok here if not too wet in the winter.....you know that was such a cheeky Cockatoo, one morning I went to get him some nuts from the kitchen and the cheeky chappie paddled in behind me!

Beautiful blog. Thank you.

Thanks Sandra, Manly is a smashing place to be, really buzzing, great for the young ones. I felt quite out of place at first on my walks, as everyone is jogging and usually with their dogs alongside them. As gardeners though, we like to take our time and get up close with the plants etc. don't we? Well that's my excuse anyway...lol!

Just perfect to view this sunny blog on a dreary evening. Our daughter spent some time in Australia after her University course and thought Manly and Byron Bay were the most wonderful places of her visit. Those Azaleas are gorgeous.

Great blog, Janey! Have relatives near Melbourne. Would love to see Australia and NZ. It's looking like an early winter here, so it's great to see things blooming and warm temps. Bougainvillea, palm trees, cockatoos...I wouldn't want to come home!

Junna, I hope you don't mind me just saying how much your English has improved since you first joined us - very well done!

Gorgeous blog Janey . . . thank you! I also "fell" for Dietes when we were in Oz, and bought some seeds but they didn't germinate here! Loved seeing the white cockatoo too - brought back fantastic memories of Manly: such a beautiful place. :)))

Really beautiful combination of pretty plants and gorgeous scenery. The beach is so lovely.
Thanks so much for a little escape!

Brilliant blog, Janey, and perfect to add a bit of warmth and colour to a grey, chilly, damp day here, cheered me up no end. Love the last photo of you with your charming little friend :)

Very interesting walkabout, Janey! :-)) Those Irises look great, I wouldn't mind growing them myself! Your "friend", the white Cockatoo will have to look for a new "friend" now you've left! LOL!

Wow, thanks everyone for all your great comments, sorry I've been a while getting back to you, I've been busy with Ted, he's been a poorly boy, but is on the mend now and seems much happier. I'm having to keep him off dry cat food as it's caused him some problems, but getting him to eat anything but fresh chicken and ham is very hard work!!

Thanks Dd, the weather there is still very changeable, but their early summer flowers will be a picture now....:))

Jim loves Byron Bay too Shirley the coastline is so beautiful, I could really live there......if only!

Lol Lori, yes, it really was fabulous, I love the birdlife, they seem to be so cheeky, and not scared of humans at all. Jim has a couple of Magpies coming regularly now too....

Thanks Junna and Klahanie, I must admit I wasn't too happy coming home to autumn, but it's good to be with my own little animals again...:))

Ooh, I can feel a trip for you coming on Annella!

Yes I agree Stera, Junnas really got her English under her belt now!

Thanks Sheila, I've found some Dietes seeds on the Internet, which say they could take up to three months to germinate, I'll give them a go and see if any come through for me. It's so good seeing the birds free and yet
Brave enough to visit us.....

Pleased you enjoyed it Wildrose and Gee, it's been very grey here today, but quite warm, managed to get some outside jobs done....:((

Youre welcome Avis! I've sent for some of those seeds Balc, I'll let you know how I get on with them.....i bet the lovely cockatoo has lots of calling places...all giving him treats!
