Fab Feb Favs
I just want to make a blog with some of my Fabulous February Favourites!
I’m starting with my balcony as it shows some of my Fab Feb Favs like Crocuses, Pansies & Violas! These brave & colourful little plants can be relied upon to put up a great show every February.
The following four photos, all of which I took today, show the 3 white planters which have lots of Pansies & some Crocuses, which have started to open this week.
The first few Crocuses have opened now in this pot. The confer has been underplanted with small bulbs for several years.
I love to underplant Violas/Pansies in the clay pots on my balcony railings with small bulbs, most often Crocuses.
On my way into town this morning I changed my usual route a little & instead of going through the all the shops I went along the path beside Huntingdon Town Park. As I began to go along the path I noticed a clump of Snowdrops.
I went into the park & spied more clumps:
In this last photo you can see little clumps all alongside the bank of the Brook, which on occasions floods the park. In a couple of weeks time they will look better but as it was such a lovely sunny day today I took this photo:
I saw these Winter Aconites, looking for all the world like a bunch of Buttercups amongst the dead leaves & the grass! They are amongst the very first I’ve seen this year so far – at least!
Well these are some of my Fab Feb Favs Hope they are yours as well!

I like Feb flowers. They start to cheer us up after the dark winter, and look lovely on your balcony. It must have been very pleasant to walk through that park today in the sunshine.

It has been a bright sunny day here too Balc.....your spring planters are really filling out now, and those are your conifers that you spoke of....we're not so far on as you up here, but wherever....Spring is definitely coming round the corner....:o))

Thanks for your comments! :-)) Spring really does seem to be arriving at long last! it seems that from Thursday, for us, we can expect rain once again! Just as the soil in the allotment is drying out, just have to grimace & bear it I suppose, after all there is nothing we can do about it!
I really love the bright little spring flowers just as we are coming to the end of winter! A walk around a park or a country lane or just looking into people's gardens on the way to/from town all contribute to the more joyful days ahead. Just seeing how the same gardens advance, literally, daily makes life worth the living! :-))

Very colourful Balcony, you cram so much into that space but it must be a lovely sight when all in bloom...
I`m like you and do tend to look into the gardens on the way downtown, I like to compare our larger gardens with the smaller wall enclosed ones, their spring bulbs are always way in front of mine, its good to see the first flowers because I know springtime is a-coming.......

Lovely, Balcony! Loved all the snowdrops in the park! I realise I miss all the small delicate flowers since moving here. As you know, Spaniards love everything BIG and LOUD, and that goes for plants too - loads of climbing roses, hollyhocks, and the ever-popular pelargoniums and petunias in large colourful displays, but I have to go higher into the mountains to see autumn crocuses or tiny daffodills in Spring. We do have a pot of miniature Welsh daffs that are just poking their leaves above the soil - a 'country-warming' gift from Partner's family, but I think I shall get some Spring crocus, narcissus and winter aconite on our next trip to Britain. :o)

I do my best to keep my balcony looking as good as I can. This year I've lost almost all my Geraniums & Pelargoniums ;-(( Even my standard Fuchsias have been killed it seems. I tried scratching off a little bark on a couple I could reach but underneath they are brown or grey & not green. The plants themselves may not be dead as one I did close to soil level & there it was green. I hope the one I couldn't reach because it's in the deepest part of the corner on the table has survived as a standard. They will probably grow up from close to or from below soil level, at least I hope the older ones will as the two younger ones I began training last year will almost certainly have died. :-(( I mean the above ground part as these are hardy Fuchsias & should at least sprout from low down.
I'm glad you all liked the flowers in the park as well as my Fab Feb Favs on my balcony! In a couple of weeks time it will be the turn of the Daffs to take over from the Crocuses & the Violas & Pansies will just get better & better with each passing week! I have many more bulbs to flower as yet & will probably do at least one more blog on my balcony in March sometime so you can see the progress it makes.

Thanks, Joanella, I'll try not to disappoint you! LOL!
PP, I'm happy that you like my pictures & I, too, love the sensation of spring they bring.
These little bulbs & the Pansies & Violas really are the harbingers of spring. They remind us that the longer & warmer days are not so far away now & that the worst of winter is falling behind us.
The Crocuses have remained half shut today as it has been a little chiller & we had rain this afternoon/evening.

Hi, You certainly make good use of small space, isn't it nice to see the new season flowers and bulbs starting to show at last. I dont have Crocus but my Daffs and Hyacinths are only a week or so away from flowering now.
11 Feb, 2011
I wholeheartedly agree with you, Bob! :-)) Besides you notice the changes day by day. You ought to get some Crocuses for nest year, they are possibly the cheeriest flowers at this time of the year!
My Hyacinths are about an inch out of the soil but another month or so will see them in flower.

Wonderful pictures Balcony,
Your balcony looks very nice with the all those pansies :) I shall try some this next winter, althoug there is no much room anymore on my balcony.
The snow drops are pretty, are they wild plants in your country?

Thank you very much, Aleyna. I'm happy you like my balcony! :-)) You really should give them a go - only they are plants accustomed to the cold & may not do so well in your climate. I found in Spain that some plants I used to grow in the UK didn't like the low humidity & the heat of a Spanish summer. Even when they were grown in the shade. But there is no harm in trying, unless you experiment you will never know just what you can grow.
There's never much room on my balcony either but I always seem to fit something more in! You may not be able to see them in my first photo on this blog but I have hanging pouches made of a very durable plastic at either end of the balcony. These have 10 pockets in which you can plant flowers like Busy Lizzies or even fruit, like strawberries. Then I have the 5 hanging baskets you see on the outside of the balcony but there are two conical ones in the interior. One had Ivy-Leaf Geraniums for many years till this winter killed them off. :-((
There is a small greenhouse in the middle of the balcony which has 4 shelves & I put plants in there as well. Then there is a table in the corner of the balcony which is usually full of plants as well & there are the 3 Conifers & a few pots on the floor of the balcony! Not immediately visible from outside.
On the railings you will have noticed I have pots in rings. These are quite common in Spain & people use them in the same way as I have. I used to have these on my balconies in Spain & brought them back with me from Spain a couple of years after returning to the UK. You may have noticed that there is a bar along the centre of the railings as the railing are covered in chicken wire I have pots sitting on this bar as well! That gives me 4 levels of planting space!!!! So I make the best use possible of them all!
