On the Road to Morocco.! :o)

No,not Bob Hope and Bing Crosby..just Pansypotter ,me,and our OH’s..Lol. one of our stopovers on our cruise last week…We decided to choose a short guided tour at our port of call,Agadir..to the Souk, and then to the Kasbat Souss..the latter is all hand crafted goods of many things.
Firstly, there aren’t a lot of historical places to visit,as most of it was destroyed in a terrible Earthquake in the 1960’s..and thousands were killed,They are still entombed under a mountain of earth, which has been left as a memorial..We could have visited Marrakesh, but didn’t want to go on a full day excursion..so here we are at the Souk ..
This is mainly food, flowers and spices..so many different aromas, wafting around us..but also quite a lot of pottery and clothing…all at"Asda Price" according to the stall holders :o))
As you can see it looks pretty basic, but it was huge, and much more spacious than we imagined, with wide aisles,so it didn’t feel claustrophobic
Piles of Pomegranites
Mountains of spices and dried fruits.( and wasps ! )
wonderful pottery Tagines
Phew ! Carole ,Harry and I managed to get out without buying anything..not for the lack of the sales pitches though..but that is their way of life..
Now a short ride to the Kasbat Souss.
There were some beautiful hand crafted goods here, and it was so interesting to watch them at work..
Some lovely Dromedary’s waiting outside..but we declined a ride..they were very placid, and just waited patiently ..I did stroke one,and it seemed to enjoy it..
We were all given a nice cold drink,so sat awhile in this central area..near a lovely carved pole ,and a wonderful hand carved out of wood…so…
..naturally,Carole and I had to try it for size..perfect fit ! Lol.
We also watched a lady grinding Almond nuts in a traditional way..These are from trees that their Goats climb up high among the branches,to seek them out..but they don’t eat the nuts, only the outer husks..
As you will see,it was really hard work for her,and she kept changing arms constantly..and the nuts are ground to a paste, which is then mainly used in lightly flavoured nutty oil,for cooking and in cosmetics..and is alleged to be very pure and healthy..
Back outside now,and another look at the chilled out
Dromedary’s…
Did we buy anything? it was very hard to resist the sales pitch here too,but we stood firm…erm, except Carole ! She succumbed in the end,and bought a pretty cream leather bag..and once she fathomed out ,how to open it ,with it’s lots of little leather straps .:o) she was quite taken with it..until..we were all in a confined space..it stank to high heaven ! ..not the usual nice leather smell..so we kept a few paces away..we were convinced it was made from Camel skin..but all ended well,as she sprayed it with perfume when we got back to the ship Lol..it gave us all a good laugh though..
Hope you enjoyed one of the places we visited…Carole will be doing the next one..:o)

Thank you,T.babe..I'm sure you will have a lovely time..enjoy,especially the sunshine ! :o) You will have to have a ride on one..one lady did,and it cantered off round the field ..these only have the one hump ! Lol.

LOL I did laugh about Carole handbag Sandra , lets hope the smell eventually wears off ! I love to look at all the foreign foods but after one bad experience of tasting something that we guessed the flies had been on I was so ill never again :o( I'm glad you had such a lovely time so many wonderful strange things to look at and enjoy and best of all to share it with friends :o)) I think I would have been tempted to have a Tagine pot !
12 Nov, 2012
It gave us all a good laugh,Amy..the Tagines were lovely, but not easy to wrap I guess..we should have put Carole's bag in it ! Lol...Sorry you were ill,it's a bit of a risk I think..they were just swarming, but luckily not on us ! such a shame,as the dates looked lovely...

My sister-in-law bought a very pretty embroidered leather coat in a souk in Agadir (I remember that earthquake being in the news all those years ago) and the cabin crew on the flight home made her take it off and check it in the hold luggage before take off because they had had so many complaints about the stink once it had got warm.
Weren't you good about not buying stuff? I'd have been loading up with spices and loads of other things: I'm a sucker for exotic markets. It looks as though you had a wonderful time - remember to book me onto the next trip, please!!
12 Nov, 2012
Wow! Another exciting moment again ,And i'm very happy Sandra to see the world by sharing this fantastic pictures , cultures and the people , the woman who grind the nuts inspires me a lot she is the picture of hardwork:-))))))

This was SO interesting and oozing with 'local colour.' Those laid - back dromedaries must sum up the relaxing holiday you all had!
I think your travel reflections equal those of Michael Palin you know, and I do hope that there will be more about this cruise in the days ahead! I could almost smell the spices in the market but glad I couldn't smell the new hand-bag!
xx

Bloomer how could you leave all that sunshine behind, I`ve had a chuckle with my daughter over the handbag, she has no sense of smell whatsoever and is very conscious of that fact to the point of worrying herself silly when buying anything.
I love the photo`s and pleased you`ve all had a good time, looking forward to seeing more of your travels.

Hi Bloomer - looks like you had a great time, sad about the earthquake, nice they have a memorial still. I can imagine the smell of the spices - great stuff ;)) Well done for not buying ! Me always pick up some little treat :D I read turmeric is supposed to prevent bowel cancer and other types as chillis are and prevent heart attacks and strokes also prostate cancer.
I just picture you with the handbag and the smell lol ! - lovely pics Bloomer

What an intriguing market place that looks. It must have smelled nice with all those fruits and spices ... And those Tagines were strange looking things. What are they for ?
It seems you were enjoying your holiday. It's interesting to hear about it :o)
Sorry I had to laugh about the handbag :D
13 Nov, 2012
Hi Sandra ...
I'm pleased you all had such a good holiday.
Lovely photos ! The market areas look very vibrant.
Super pics of the dromedaries ...
.. and of you too ... Lol.
13 Nov, 2012
Oh I love markets like this.....such a lot to choose from that we don't get here......especially the mountain of pomegranates. Lol Carole....one stinky bag..ha ha, their tanning methods will be different to ours won't they? Lovely pics of you all Sandra especially the two of you sitting on the hand.....lovely blog....:))
13 Nov, 2012
I can just imagine that pink coat,Gattina..and glad I wasn't sitting next to her ! Carole thankfully ,packed hers :o))
.................
thank you Junna,,I too enjoy seeing all the different cultures..and glad that wasn't my job,to grind all those nuts and spices ! such hard work...
..............
Thank you,Chris..maybe Carole and I should share Michael Palin's money ! Lol...I loved those Dromedaries..such long eyelashes ! no Mascara needed there :o).It really was a relaxing holiday..except for both Airports..nightmare!
................
Thank you,Sue..It was mainly sunny, except for a tropical storm we were caught up in,in Madeira.I'm sure even your daughter would have noticed the smell..:o) Glad you enjoyed the blog and pics..
................
Thank you Paul,..I think a lot of the spices have healthy properties to them..and the stalls were so well laid out too..somehow I don't think Carole's bag will be seeing the light of day much ! Lol.
..............
thank you Hywel,a very intiguing place..I agree. Those Tagines are used in slow cooking, mainly Lamb, which is their traditional dish, but are widely available here too ..
Similar to our casseroles..glad the bag episode made you smile..:o)
............
Hi Terra, thank you....We didn't get to see anything else in the area,as it was only a short excursion, but we thoroughly enjoyed it..there was much more of historical interest when we went to Casablanca, two years ago..,this was quite basic..but still nice to go somewhere different...x
.............
Thanks Janey.I think you are right. It will be the tanning method,I'm sure..a shame,as it is a pretty bag..:o).Saying that,Carole saw one in Madeira she liked better, earlier in the week, and we told her to wait,as she might get one cheaper ! ...She can blame us for that :o))..It was dearer too .Lol.
Thanks Janey

Hi Sandra,
Good to see you on here again...I've missed you. The holiday blog is great. I would have kept well away from the wasps they are one stinging creature which seem to make a 'beeline' (pardon the pun) for me. I would definitly have brought back a Tagine, meat cooked in one of these is so tender, it just melts. I don't think I'd have had a ride on a camel either, they don't call them ships of the desert for nothing..and my experience of ships isn't good as you know! The carved hand looked fantastic! Not sure you and I would have fitted in though lol!
Am I reading it right?...Goats in trees??? :0
13 Nov, 2012
looks like the four of you had a wonderful time, beautiful photo's on here Bloomer.
13 Nov, 2012
Well Done Sandra certainly gives a vibrant picture of our time in Morocco, pity you cannot downloads aromas! my bag is still as fragrant lol
13 Nov, 2012
Glad you enjoyed it,Waddy..thank you..And yes,you have read it right..The Goats climb up to get the nuts !
We went on a camel ride in Lanzarote a few years ago,and it was really good, although they were the two humped variety..not like these, with only one..At least you have a back rest with a Camel ! .Lol.
...............
Thanks Yorkshire..we had a great time, and it was over all too soon ..especially the lovely food..:o)
..........
Lol,Carole..hope you are keeping it well sprayed ! ..You aren't using it on our next meal out,are you? ..Rachel will bar us ! :o) ..glad you enjoyed the blog...your turn now ! :o)
13 Nov, 2012
Will have to be tomorrow Sandra had an ordeal at the dentist! have to go again next week guess which day 21st and here's me thinking it was a Special day ;0)
13 Nov, 2012
Cannot believe you resisted temptation you two girls! All those goods and you bought nothing???? Mind you sometimes you buy just for the sake of it, dont you? Had to really laugh about Pp.s bag!!! Great photos, those figs look so yummy. x
13 Nov, 2012
Oh I have enjoyed reading this and look forwards to the next instalment......you could try febreze for the bag.....or bicarbonate of soda thats supposed to absorb smells, but may make the handbag a bit gritty.......
13 Nov, 2012
Thoroughly enjoyed reading and hearing all about your day trip. A beautiful part of the world indeed.
I remember my grandad telling me years ago (he was in the merchant navy and travelled all round Africa for years) that Camel leather stinks and never to buy it. That brought back a nice wee memory for me as we were once shopping for a leather jacket for him and wouldn't buy one from a certain shop as he was convinced it was camel leather. Despite the shop owner reassuring him - he was just not having it!!!
Glad you all had a lovely time - can't believe you avoided buying anything. I would not have been so restrained I'm sure :)
13 Nov, 2012
OK,Carole..I will look tomorrow..:o) glad the Dentist visit went ok..re phone call ...and it will still be a special day..tell Harry to make you some of his special porridge ! Lol.
...........
Thank you,G.mage..To be honest,we didn't feel like haggling,..probably would have ended up with more than we bargained for ! :
............
Thanks Pam..glad you enjoyed it..must remember about the Febreze..the one thing we forgot ! ..and the kitchen sink :o)
...........
Thank you,Scottish..shame we didn't know about the Camel skin beforehand..ah well,we live and learn :o)
It just added to all the laughter we had..Pleased you enjoyed it,and how lovely to listen to your grandfather telling you about his exciting journeys..Another reason we didn't buy anything,is that their money, the Dirham..
is a closed currency, and you aren't allowed to take it out of the country..they don't take Euro's in the market, only cash,so we were advised not to get any..The craft market was fine, and some accepted Euro's..
13 Nov, 2012
Lol B, 3 camels and a new husband!!!
13 Nov, 2012
I don't think Customs would have let me go through.'nothing to declare' channel,G.mage...I can just picture it! Lol.Smuggling would have been a problem,if only for the smell ! :o)
14 Nov, 2012

Thankyou for showing us these photos of the markets Sandra ... 'Elf & Safety' would have a fit if they saw those spices and Poms ... personally I love the traditional ways of displaying goods in different countries. I had no idea what a Tagine was until I read your comment to Hywel ... glad I'm not the only one who has led a sheltered life! I love the carved hand ... shame about the aromatic bag Carole bought!
14 Nov, 2012
I've flagged the comment Sandra.
Did you know all the flaggings go through to Dave, and he is only there part time, when he's able to do so.
He then tells Ajay or Peter about the flagged comment, and then they decide whether to remove it or not ....
Maybe it will be removed in time ... I hope so :o)
14 Nov, 2012
How exotic everything looks, so glad you all had such a great time:-) I just wish you had let me out of the trunk to see some of it, then I wouldn't have minded so much having Caroles smelly bag dumped in the trunk with me:-(
14 Nov, 2012
Thank you Hywel, and no,I didn't know ..that is helpful,so I can understand why,if it isn't removed quickly...at least it isn't offensive, but at least it should draw attention to it :o)
14 Nov, 2012
Lol,Shirley..glad you enjoyed it,and nice to know it was also educational ! :o) There were a lot of beautiful pieces of wood, and lots of carvings..I wish I had asked what kind of wood it was..but you just wanted to touch it..which Carole and I did,in more ways than one ! :o))).
14 Nov, 2012
Thank you,Ba..you weren't on the top of that church as we passed by,or we would have willingly picked you up at Aldridge! ....our luggage was underweight as well..so you see,we had left room for you ! Lol:o)))))))
14 Nov, 2012
Flagged by me, enjoyed your colourful holiday pics, really interesting.

I did laugh about the smelly bag, poor Carole! I think the nicest thing about this blog is the fact that you became such good friends that you now go on holiday together.....all because of GOY :o)))xxx
Ps Why were you buying ciggies Bloomer?!
15 Nov, 2012
it must have been removed as I can't see it,
15 Nov, 2012

15 Nov, 2012
Thanks Annella..and about the ciggies..my only vice,I'm afraid..as I'm perfect apart from that ! Lol.
15 Nov, 2012
great blog sandra and fun had by all looking at the pictures, i would love to go but Baz says he wouldnt, he hates countries like this full of poverty and he doesnt like the food after working in similar places, i told him going on hols isnt like that but its a no haha
enjoyed your trip :o)) x
ps missed the scam comment but hate all that sort of thing, un-nerving :o(
15 Nov, 2012
Thanks San,I agree, they are poor countries..well,mostly..and to be honest,I wouldn't want a holiday there..an organised day trip is fine for us..but interesting, all the same..the poverty is upsetting, which was more noticable in Casablanca..the haves on one side of the road, and the have nots on the other...very sad...
Glad you missed the scam, but at least it wasn't offensive..just money grabbing ! they picked on the wrong one there ! Lol.
15 Nov, 2012
Lol Bloomer my only vice too now the drinking has gone along with the 2st it had attached to my bottom! So like you apart from that I am perfect ;O))))xx
16 Nov, 2012
Nice to know there are now two of us,Annie ..I don't like being on my own :o) xx
16 Nov, 2012
Theres 3 of us now! but its not my only vice, hate to admit this but i like a tipple, only one tho it ,whiskey ,and so does my OH ciggies and Whiskey. Not got the energy for the wild wild women,he'll stick to mowing the lawn!! :)
ps I flagged the scammer.
18 Nov, 2012
Nothing wrong with a tipple,Val,and you don't need to apologise for it.:o) I don't drink, but used to like one too..but for some reason,I just went right off it ,a few years ago..A slimline tonic with lemon,no ice,is as exciting as it gets..or a cuppa ! It's so living life on the edge ! Lol.
you made me laugh about your OH....don't forget the scarifying...another good energy sapper ..ha ha..thanks for flagging the scammer :o)
18 Nov, 2012

It was H.bird..we were more concerned about all the flies and wasps on everything... some stalls did have their produce covered over with glass, but they were covered with them too..not the best incentive to buy anything ! Lol.
Just good to see other cultures..:o)
