SOME CHEERING WINTER SHRUBS NEAR THE HOUSE

The aucuba family give brilliant winter colour. Well, they give brilliant colour all year round, but we notice it more in the winter when there is little else. These evergreens are all near my house to cheer me through the barren months. The first three pics show a plant which was grown from a cutting by a very dear friend who died a few years ago. It nestles under a large fatsia (was houseplant) by a euonymus and young viburnum. It’s sporting some pretty berries too:-)

This is A. Golden King, this doesn’t show how golden it really is…fantastic colour.

Not sure what these are on Golden King…could be flowers or berries…anyone know?

This is cheating as this ivy is not by the house, inasmuch as anything in my tiny garden is not near the house. It’s near the end, but such a lovely plant in all seasons and again a brighter yellow than my poor camera shows:-)

Hope they cheer you too:-)

I like evergreens too Ba, they brighten up the dullest days, I love the Aucuba berries, I've not seen any on mine but its not near the house so maybe the birds have had them

Thanks Lincslass, I have 3 different ones..all very showy really. I think the one in the top pics is the ordinary spotted laurel. I found out last year there are quite a lot of lovely aucuba, some prefering sun! I wonder if the birds eat the berries?

Variegated plants are great to have. They stand out and give a bit of variation in the garden. And when they get berries, it's a bonus. Very nice :o)

I remember seeing your last years pic, with the berries.,Ba..as I have a plain green one which berried well too..just reappearing now..:o) I agree, they are such good 'do ers 'in our gardens..I haven't noticed the birds going for mine,as I find them on the ground later on..but I leave them, and some germinated..potted them up,and gave away..I think those may be the insignificant flowers and new foliage forming on your spotted one..I had one at our last house, but it never had berries..might not have been the same variety as yours though..
