Visit to Mottisfont Abbey

Spent a very pleasant day at Mottisfont Abbey and gardens yesterday. Although rain was forecast it managed to keep away and we had sunshine most of the day. I know The Old Gunner visited here a few weeks ago and showed a few pictures, but hopefully I can show a few different pics. This used to be a Priory founded in 1201. After the Dissolution (1536-40) the Priory was acquired by William Lord Sandys who converted it to a house. The garden contains the National Collection of old fashioned shrub roses, most of which are over for this year, but still a few flowering. It is now owned by the National Trust. There is a beautiful river walk. At the moment there is an exhibition of Beatrix Potter memorabelia which is really lovely. Hope you enjoy…..

This is supposedly the largest Plane Tree in England

Can you see the trout in the river

The willow tree was perfectly situated in the middle of the water....no problems with the roots there then! I remember my grandparents having two willow trees in their front garden and they caused no end of problems with their root systems.

Glad you had a nice day, despite the forecast of rain. It's so nice when the forecast is wrong...and what a lovely place to spend a day out. Thanks, Cinders.
