Primula Auricula Open Day

Yesterday went to Pops Plants Open Day, near Salisbury, and was amazed how many people had turned up in spite of the dreadful wet weather. Some having travelled long distances to get there, those are the people who are totally addicted to these pretty little plants. Mind you, it is an addictive hobby, as I am fast finding out, and couldnt resist buying some, four in fact. I will show you a few pictures, and I hope you enjoy looking at them.

Kentucky Blues

Serre

Cherry Pie

Betty Wilson

Judy Borman

Metis

Sonny Boy

A few I didnt manage to get the names of, but it was a beautiful display of hundreds of different ones. I think I am liking the doubles, more and more, and I also bought a pink double which doesnt have a flower on yet, and Toffee Crisp which is gold centred Orange/brown, also no flower to show you yet.

What a great display, and I'm glad you bought some nice ones.
Beryl and I have both been addicted to these plants since last year. I bought a new one recently .... must put a photo of it.
We both tend to like the green and grey ones :o)
We'll be going to a place that sells them not far from here, soon.
Good luck with your collection. I hope you get some more too :o))

I have several plants I think mine are Cherry Pie - I like the look of those doubles - they are very pretty - oh dear my Malvern list gets longer by the day!- Marigpld

Those are beautiful, Cinders.
Thanks for sharing the pics :o)

Thanks Yorks.

They are lovely Hywel aren't they. The friend I went with likes the green/grey ones, myself I think I prefer the little doubles, although like them all really. My problem now is going to be where to put them. They don't mind the cold and dry, but don't like wet, so need to have some protection.

Marigold - Cherry pie is a gorgeous colour, and I love the pastel colours too. Have a lovely day at Malvern, when is it actually.

Oh I love these, I only have a blue one but its spreading well for me, I really must get some more.
Lovely pics Cinders, added to faves and the wishlist has grown, thankyou for sharing your visit...

Thank you Clarice, and Lincs. You could make more from the one you have lincs if you cut off the new ones that have formed, and it will probably do them good, they will form larger flowers I am led to believe.

They're all so pretty, I'd be pushed to choose a favourite!

Cinders Lovely collection of plants, don't be tempted to plant yours in the open garden,I suspect the one Lincslass refers to is in the section Alpine Auriculas they are the only ones that are reasonably safe out doors.

Marigold Pops Plants are usually at Malvern.

At the risk of being considered a know all i will mention that if you take cuttings and most of us do, to use a sharp blade preferably sterilized and make a straight cut below a leaf joint then use Flowers of Sulphur to dust the joint on the mother plant as they are prone to Rotting.
Heeled cuttings are risky to the parent unless it is almost falling off.
Better a rooted offset but only certain ones make them.

Thanks for that Brian, sending you pm.

Thankyou Sheila and Surreylad

They are stunning Cinders, especially the blue ones! I can totally get why you are becoming addicted! There is a nursery up here....Kath pointed it out to me...Angus Plants is the name. http://www.angusplants.co.uk/ It is near here but they do an internet buying service.

29 Apr, 2012

looking forward to photos when they bloom, always attractive flowers.

29 Apr, 2012

Thanks Karen. Yes Kath did tell me about it, and I have been in to the site, but I am trying not to get too addicted, as I havent anywhere to put them at the moment.

Bampy thanks, I am not sure if they will flower this year, they are rather small, but I shall certainly put pics on when they do.

These are lovely cheerful plants, Cinders - no wonder you can't resist! I am drawn to the one behind in the Judy Borman picture.

29 Apr, 2012

Ah, no I've got it wrong, Cinders...I mean the almost black and white one in the picture underneath that one...

29 Apr, 2012

30 Apr, 2012

Very interesting! I wish I had been able to go there on that day.....

4 May, 2012

Naoto, it was lovely to see, but the weather that day was atrocious, not a day for travelling there really, but I live quite near. Worth a visit though. Thank you for your comments

4 May, 2012

I went to Ashwood Nurseries on that day - but I couldn't find the auriculas I was looking for, so I asked a staff if they had. Then he invited me to the huge tent where customers basically can't enter and let me choose what I wanted.

So I could purchase a grey-edged auricula called Clare and a double auricula called Funny Valentine as well as helleborus niger "Ashwood Strain" and a Chinese hepatica. It's worth a visit and thank god I didn't get hit with rain either......

But I'd love to go and see Pops next spring.....

5 May, 2012

That sounds lovely Naoto. I haven't got any grey edged ones yet, but no doubt I will eventually get one. Where do you keep yours, outdoors ? or do you keep them inside. I have some border auriculas that stay out all year, but my newest alpine ones I shall take in for the winter.

5 May, 2012

I keep mine in Gardman's growhouse (miniature greenhouse) which I bought from a local garden centre when it was 50%-off discounted (so it was about 40 quid).

It's said that border auriculas can be planted outside, but I think all auriculas should be kept in a greenhouse/coldframe because the flowers will last much, much longer.

6 May, 2012

You could well be right about that, but my border ones have been out for several years now, and they have been fine, except for when we get all this rain, but they are a bit sheltered. I think they get too hot in the greenhouse.

6 May, 2012

love your pics Cinders...they are all new to me but i'm a fast learner...:-)

4 Mar, 2013

I to keep mine all behind glass except for 1pot that sits out all year.

For added protection.

4 Mar, 2013

i have put mine straight in the green house. but i will try a few out side just to see.

4 Mar, 2013

Hi Sandra. They are lovely flowers aren't they. Are you starting with auricula ? I have some in the greenhouse, my newest double ones, the rest I have outdoors, not looking too good at the moment, but will be ok. One or two that have a little shelter have some buds coming.

Hi Scotkat. How are yours doing this year ?

4 Mar, 2013

i have just taken over a friends collection Cinders...all a bit confusing at the moment...but i have picked up a little info on here tonight..:-)

Sandra there is plenty of growing instructions on google.

Hi Cinders,

the new auriculaseason is comming soon and I look
around allready at the internet for new info and pictures and so I found your
posts. Here in Holland nobody seems to collect them and I have to search abroad for plant and info. I have about 250 different Auriculas and would love to trade the offshoots with other collectors. May-be there's one interrested at this blog. Twice a year I order some plants at Pops and they have nice varieties and are really helpfull people.

6 Feb, 2014

Hi Aurikelina, I'm afraid my auricular are not looking too well at the moment. I have some in my cool greenhouse and some outdoors, but our weather has been so bad lately, wet, wet, wet, so the outdoor ones are struggling a bit. The ones inside are a little better, but a bit early for flowers yet. So I am not ready to do any swapping yet. It sounds as though you have a very large and interesting collection. Pops Plants are very good aren't they.

6 Feb, 2014

Indeed, I just put a new order at Po PS and wil received them next week, I'm looking forward to some new (most stripes) varieties. I'm living in the North-eastern part of Holland and we had some snow and frosts a fortnight ago but today it started ho rain here also. If you take a look at my pictures, which I placed yesterday, you see my collection and that I keep it under a roof. Whenever you or others want to trade with me, don't hesitate to contact me.

7 Feb, 2014

Thank you, I will remember that Aurikelina.
