I used to keep these plants Cinders on my long kitchen window ledge. They got leafier as time went on and less flower. Now I have moth orchids, all 7 have flowered recently. I love Streps and had one of them for over 20 years. I had the original blue one and kept it going by leaf cuttings. I like the orchids as they thrive on semi neglect!!......trying to remember the name of the older Strep. Maybe you can or someone will, or it will jump into my head.

These are just gorgeous...the first one is stunning. I could really get 'into' these Cinders. But I won't. I'm rubbish with indoor plants!

They don't like full sun Sticki, but saying that I have some in the window in sun at the moment, but as it moves around they cool down a bit, and they are fine, just watch that they don't get too dry. Thank you, glad you like them.

Oh Dorjac, I don't remember the first ones, unless it was Falling Stars, and that was my first one about twenty years ago. Still a favourite. I also have a few orchids, I find they don't need so much attention.

Well I have so many now Karen. I keep saying I am going to stop propogating, then I see another different one and off we go again,

Just remembered the name of that original old streptocarpus........CONSTANT NYMPH Cinders. I kept it going for ages a lovely bright blue with great big leaves. They did bring it out again some years ago. Katie is a lot more spectacular.

Thanks Dorjac, but I don't remember that one, and haven't seen it around anywhere. Don't think its in Dibleys catalogue either. Interesting though. There are so many new ones now aren't there.

Beautiful photos, Cinders, I don't blame you for being hooked on these, such fantastic colours. I love the gently colourled Charlotte.

Thank you Gee. I like that one as well.

Streptocarpus is similar to Heuchera for so many new introductions. It is amazing how different the shape and size of leaves are on Streps. The leaves on Constant Nympth were huge. Probably why it dropped out of cultivation. I got it at a fuchsia society plant sale and was told it was one of the original collected plants. Do you ever grow them outside?

28 Jul, 2012

Hi Dorjac, no I don't grow them outside. I agree some of the leaves do grow quite large, but I usually trim them if they do that. It does them no harm really.
