Village Flower Show

Yesterday was the Shrewton Flower Show, and we had a lovely day for it. The entries were down on last year, but I am not surprised after the weather we have had this year. We had the Shrewton Silver Band playing during the afternoon, and all the usual stalls, selling home made soaps, cards, boot sales, plants, and our Country Market Stall, where I help out for my sins. I took a few photos of the flower arrangements for you, and to cap the day off I won the cup for the best garden in the Till Valley. A lovely surprise.

Thank you Sandra, I really couldn't believe it, the previous winner had won it six times in a row, so it was lovely to break the cycle.

Well done you - seeing your garden on here - I think you deserve it. Hope the other person wasn't too gutted!
Nice arrangments and thanks for sharing :)

Thanks all, you have all been wonderful with your support. The other person was very gracious in defeat and congratulated me. She said she was pleased for me Scottish.

Congratulations, it must have been harder this year!

Thanks Denise. Yes it was, but my phlox came out just right for the judging, so it was quite colourful when the judges came around last week.

I love looking around local village shows. I used to like entering into our friendly autumn show but it was a company one and you had to work there. Well done on winning the best garden. Looking at your photos, its easy to see why you won it. Do you get to keep the cup??

How lovely and congratulations to you too. It must have been a very enjoyable day for you. I wish there was something like that here. They're too miserable around here to do anything like that.

When I lived in Rutland the village where I lived had it´s anual flower show...and probably still does....it used to be one of the highlights of the year there. My mum used to show flower arrangements, dad used to show all his best veg, and us kids used to do wild flower arrangements....everybody won something....even if it was a "runners up" prize....and the picture above showing how the veg and flowers were set out looked exactly like that as well.....so nothing changes much at village flower shows.

Thank you Neellan, it was fun.
Poppy, no, I have to hand it back in time for next years, to have my name engraved on it as this years winner. Thank you for your lovely comments.

Many thanks Hywel, it was a great day. Why don't you try to organise something like that where you live ? You might be surprised how many people would rally round and help.
Rogi I agree with you, these flower shows are all much the same and have been for years, but its a chance for everyone to meet up and have a lovely day, even if you don't enter the competitions. I used to enter with jams, cakes and home made wines, etc., also needlework, but leaving it to the younger ones now !

The flower arrangements all look great. Glad I wasn't a judge, it must have been difficult to choose. Well done on winning best garden, you must feel really chuffed.:-)

30 Jul, 2012

Thank you Lijemc, it must have been difficult for the judges I agree, and yes I am chuffed.

Lovely to see you holding the cup for the best garden Cinders. Pleased your main contender was gracious in defeat. I have fond memories of our village flower show. Held in the grounds of a local hotel. As others have said, that very little changes. The marquee looks very classy with those windows all along. We have been to our friend's village show at Seend Cleeve several times. That is very traditional, and the flowers are in one of the village halls. To me these shows are England at it's best and very nostalgic, but real.

Thank you Dorjac. I agree with your comment - England at it's best. The older I get the more I appreciate all these things. Its good that people don't let them die out.

Ive just come back to have another look Cinders. I do miss not going to these little local shows. In the second to last photo, is that your market stall? I can see there are alot of strepto plants and a few other interesting pots. I hope you took lots of money. If anyone does get the chance to enter one of these shows and hasnt done so before. I would urge you to have a go. They are great fun and its a real buzz if you actually win a prize. Congratulations again Cinders on winning the prize for the best garden.

30 Jul, 2012

Oh Poppy thats nice of you. Yes it is my stall with the streps on. I didnt have as many as usual, but sold quite a few, and some of the other heucheras and herbs. I didnt make 'loads' of money, but enough to keep me ticking over. I checked the denim leaf you sent me this morning and it looks like it has died, but was going to give it a bit longer, then accidentally knocked it over, so that one has bitten the dust ! The other leaf you sent looks ok at the moment, so fingers crossed.

I love the local Village shows too. It's a shame that some aren't given enough support really. I used to enter the same Company annual show that PoppyL did! -You got a real buzz out of entering and it was great fun whether or not you won. Glad that you did so well at yours Cinders - Well Done! :o)))

Thanks Petal, I agree with you, we should all support these little shows, this is the kind of thing that makes Britain unique.

31 Jul, 2012

No wonder you won a prize Cinders, your garden is beautiful, love the flower arrangements, such pretty colours and your stall is rather lovely, were you selling those plants?

31 Jul, 2012

Having just seen your next blog Cinders, I'm not surprised you won....what an amazing achievement! Brilliant, and so happy that it went to someone who doesn't have acres and millions! :D

31 Jul, 2012

Yes Grandmage I was selling the plants, but they weren't all mine.

Thanks Karen, its nice to know that my fellow Goyers like it.

31 Jul, 2012

Oh yes, it is jam-packed full of interest, beautifully tended and sooooo colourful! I always particularly admire your success with Clematis Cinders. Not nearly so successful here with my collection....especially not this year.

31 Jul, 2012

Thank you. The flower arrangements are good aren't they.

Karen last year your clematis were wonderful

Having seen your garden pics, am not surprised that you won; well deserved, I'd say. Lovely flower arrangements. I particularly like the 2nd prize one with the pink and apricot shades - a bit different, which appeals to me. Congratulations, Cinders.
