Was just wondering if anyone as spared a moment to think of there own pets that live in the garden, i have got some downpipe in mine for my fish to go in for extra warmth, even so it does not stop me worrying about them, also what ever you do dont break the ice on your ponds, apart from having downpipe in the pond i also have a ball flotting on top of water to stop gasses building up inside the pond.
I’m hoping my fish will be ok done everythink i’m suppose to do but still worry about them in this extreme weather. REMEMBER DONOT BREAK ICE ON TOP OF POND IF YOU HAVE FISH INIT.

Thanks TT i'm just hoping and praying that the 4 of them are alright, as i would rather have every plant in garden or greenhouse die on me than my fish.xx

I'm sure they will be OK Carol but I'll keep my fingers crossed for them all the same!

I am sure they will be ok
we love our fish too
we havent named the but we love them
its strange really you wouldnt think you could get so much pleasure for some gold things swimming in a pond .
I think they get to know you and trust you though
We have babies in ours so we are worried too.
One day 2 years age the heron got in and we didnt see fish for weeks we were nearly going to buy new ones then they started to come back up slowly.
We were all so upset even our teenager was gutted
I cant wait to see them again
Ours go very deep at this time of year
I have a photo on my pictures of our fish:)

hope your fish will be ok.........my pond is frozen, just hope my little fish are ok under there................more snow on way 4 tomorrow..........

Yes, I'm afraid so, Holly. Looks like a North/South split this time.

we've fish as well and leave the pump running all the time and so there is always a thawed area -- the heron landed on the ice the other day and fell over leaving feather patterns in the snow when i frightened him off

Vicky my 2 youngest grandchildren christened the two big one when i first got them 7yrs ago, and the two little ones TT named them last year:o)))

Fingers crossed, Clarice, that the fish will be OK. I have brought my tortoises indoors now, felt it was safer to have them out of hibernation rather than the possibility of them getting too cold. Not so simple to look after fish though, so I hope they are safe down the bottom of the pond.

If they survive this winter, i've made up my mind i'm going to get a tank for next winter and bring them in doors, had my two big ones quite a few years now.

I keep worrying about our three poor little fish, but I do believe they are very hardy. We have a rubber ball floating too, which leaves a tiny space around it when it freezes. I've noticed too that the water next to some yorkstone rocks in the corners often doesn't freeze completely. Maybe this is because there is a tiny amount of residual heat absorbed in summer, left in them. Down in the very bottom of the pond there will be male frogs buried in what mud they can find, hibernating. Apparently they go into suspended animation, even breathing isn't required. Then in Spring they will start calling the females to join them. Roll on Spring.

May feel like spring is along way of but the light night are coming back now so thats one good think.

I have been really worried about my fish for a couple of weeks now Clarice. To be honest ,it's the only thing that has bothered me with this weather. The pond is very small and not that deep and like you would rather loose the plants than the fish. I have one koi as well and i know they need deep water. we have made sure there is a hole in the ice but i don't know if that will be enough. I hope and pray every day that they will be ok.

My pond is not to deep either its about 18-20ins it was a bought pond, know how you feel, i keep feeding the birds and there is nothing i can do for my fish, the two big ones are 7yrs old so if they get through this winter may get a big container or something so next year i can bring them indoors.

fingers crossed.

not seen mine for weeks either. Hoping that the 3 inches of ice is keeping them snug. we too have spaces around the edges where the plants are. A friend has a totally enclosed one with no 'breathing gaps' and he broke the ice. 3 of his 4 fish died due to the shock waves.

We found one of our large goldfish has succumbed to the cold in the last week. The rest have gone down to the bottom of the pond where its warmer but they are hardly moving.Strangely the pond hasnt frozen over yet.

good addvice carol and hope they are ok, im sure they will be, if its deep enough and can go to bottom where its warmer, which im sure they can :o))

Ive been out to feed the birds and had a look at my pond. the ice is melting round the edge and i saw my little fish..... after going in to get hot water to defrost the bird baths.. had another look at pond and he had moved so must be ok..... so i was very pleased..... my other 2 fish died in the late summer... only this one left....
10 Jan, 2010
Holly so pleased your fish is alright, i found if you empty your birdbath at night then next morning you can put fresh water straight in to bath and it does not freeze up the same and the birds can use it right away.
10 Jan, 2010
Thats a good idea clarice.........
10 Jan, 2010
I hope your fishes will be allright Carol
11 Jan, 2010
