I have a little greenhouse as most of you know

In the autumn i had lots of cutting and little plants grown from seed, as it got colder i bubble wrapped all inside , put fleece on top of all my baby plants and plants i was over wintering, also on top of the fleece i put layers of newspaper, up to middle of December all was still doing well, so as it got colder there was bubble wrap to the door and door closed, so not been inside it for over a month.
So this morning sun shinning lovely, of down garden i went to check everything was still alive, just got to the greenhouse door to open it, and my back gate opened and a friend of mine walked in and said what you doing, when i told him he said to not go in as with it being such a small greenhouse, opening the door will let lots of cold in and the heat from the sunshine is warming it up, and if any of them are dead can’t do much about it but at least i can keep the others warm.So left my greenhouse all tuck up in its fleece and bubble wrap till it gets a bit warmer.

Awww clarice , I don't know how you can resist having a look in your greenhouse, I've been in mine this morning, and i've left the door open a bit to let in some air. go on have a look before it gets too late in the day.

Must admit am a bit tempted, just thought as he knows quite abit about gardening and he as lots of greenhouses on his allotment he'd know better than me.

Thought I would let you know they said last night, next week we are going to get the very cold weather back with snow for the 3 weeks more after that, in some parts of uk, so I thought I would let you know to warn you, so as you know so you don't lose all your cuttings. I too would of checked them, can't see it hurting checking there is no frost. The bbc is no longer going to have the met office for their weather reports they have found a more reliable place, because the met office has been unreliable of forecasting their long time weather forecast.

i'd be tempted to get inside pdq with watering can and shut the door behind me fast ~ check on anything that might need a touch of water~the problem is that when the sun shines everything dries out so I pop into mine and water anything that looks as though it needs it~can't see how a few minutes can hurt but you may catch things that will die if left without water!

Thanks everyone if weather ok tomorrow will go in and check......

17 Jan, 2010

Mr MB has certainly been checking and watering in our greenhouses and dripping water all over the kitchen floor to boot... Once the outside temp is above freezing I'd uncover everything and let natural light an air to it. Plants, even seedlings do not like being completely covered up for longer than needed. Our fleece covers are all sitting folded with fingers crossed we will not have to use again.

Thanks alot MG...

Maybe you should go inside Carol. I think perhaps some ventilation would do the plants good. If some are dead and going mouldy you would also be able to get rid of them. The place being all closed up with no ventilation might encourage the spread of mildew. It would not get too cold in there during the day I don't think, especially if the sun is shining.

To be honest if he had come 5seconds later i would have been inside checking everything out, so in morning i'm going to do what i was going to do this morning, just wait till he comes round again.

17 Jan, 2010

what if they need some water carol, you dont want them to die of thirst either, tough desision to make, either they dry and die or get cold and die, but surely they have establist now and should be strong enough to check and at least give them a drink,

17 Jan, 2010

I've been in mine today Clarice and the first seedlings have germinated.

17 Jan, 2010

I wouldn't be too harsh on your friend Carol. He was probably trying to help :o))

ive checked the ones i have left and watered them a couple of times and they are doing ok, lost my fuchsia cuttings as soon as frost started but hopefully my hardy fuchsia will be ok, so i will have to take differant steps to save things this year

17 Jan, 2010

Cheers Sandra....

17 Jan, 2010

I popped into my greenhouse and gave a little water to seedlings. I have left the pot of my coprosma wrapped but the foliage is now uncovered. I do like your staging,Clarice. Did it come with the greenhouse or did you buy that separately. It's so much tidier than mine :)

17 Jan, 2010

Hi Gee got them separate to greenhouse, got them from B&Ms they hold loads of trays....

17 Jan, 2010

I haven't heard of B&Ms, Clarice. Will have a look online to see if there is something similar. Thanks :)

17 Jan, 2010

Popped in there yesterday and they are starting to get all there gardening things in, B&Ms Gee is alot like Wilkos but alot cheaper, they have got bird food in now so i'm going to try some of there's as its only a few mins walk from my house.

Oh,Clarice, what an awkward situation for you,as you were probably be dying to go in too...Go for it,girl, its your greenhouse.!I can understand how you feel,if he helps you though, but would have gone in anyway. We have someone by us, a bit like that, its just finding the right words not to offend, isn't it? hope you get a nice day tomorrow,to see how they are,in there....

17 Jan, 2010

Cheers Bloomers.....

17 Jan, 2010

i took all the covers off in my tunnel today...opened two doors a let the sun and the gentle breeze move through. at about three this afternoon i covered them all back up and shut the doors to catch the last of the days sunshine,,,,,some of them need water but with more cold weather comming i resisted....they seem to cope with the cold better if they are dry. but there were a few osteospumum cuttings that wernt happy so i think i will water them in the morning .

17 Jan, 2010

I totally agree, Carol - he's WRONG this time! Get in there, let a little air in and see what's happening in there. I've had to water various plants several times in the last week or so.

I do hope all is well! Please let us know.

I am not listening to the weather forecasters who say there will be more of the white stuff, by the way. Grrrrr......I just hope that they're wrong, as well! lol.

17 Jan, 2010

Thanks Barbara and Sandra, no worries will be in there in morning.

17 Jan, 2010

Cant see as it would have done any harm Clarice.....as folk have pointed out,a bit of fresh air is no bad thing. Sure you will find all well in the morning !

17 Jan, 2010

I agree Clarice.....you do k=need to just have an air change to keep your plant healthy.....do it at the warmest part of the day....

17 Jan, 2010

Thanks every one been in greenhouse this morning and all well, noothing as died on me, up to yet.

18 Jan, 2010

That's good, Clarice :)

18 Jan, 2010

Cheers Gee :o))

18 Jan, 2010

Good to hear your greenhouse is doing fine, Clarice.
Have you left fleece on some areas ?. :o)

23 Jan, 2010

Did you water all the plants, Carol?

23 Jan, 2010

I only watered those that looked really dry, left door open for a while then i put all fleece back on, as theres time to still get some bad weather. Had greenhouse opened again since then but i also put bubble wrap back to doorway each time.

24 Jan, 2010

Getting colder again today it seems !

24 Jan, 2010

Its not very nice here at all, not cold but very damp dirty sort of day,not raining but everything seems to be dripping wet.

24 Jan, 2010

I saw a weather forecast and looks like some parts of Britain might have snow again at the end of the week !

24 Jan, 2010

Fingers crossed it does'nt come back here :o)))

24 Jan, 2010

~ it seems as though the west will be having the best weather this week Carol with bright sunshine so I will out there checking on my plants because I have a small heater that heats overnight if necessary, things can dry out quite rapidly~
I do have an automatic roof vent which opens up as the temperature warms up and closes as it gets colder again but that was put in many years ago when the greenhouse was new~not sure how easy to fit they are nowadays.
~You do whatever you think is right~ it's your greenhouse and plants! but don't be too hard as no doubt your friend means well and you may need his help!

24 Jan, 2010

I think the snow was due to hit East Anglia and the West Country...
.. you could be safe in the middle...Lol.

24 Jan, 2010

Arlene your right, he does have his uses sometimes, TT very rear for us to get snow at all and usually when it does its come and gone the same day....
