Here is the part of the garden where 30 willow/poplars were felled about 6 years ago most of the stumps have gone but a few are still left and look quite nice in their jackets!

Lucky number...Lol.

I wonder what insects are hibernating in and around the stumps.

I had a grove that were once a set of fence posts 60 years ago chopped them down to 6 ft but due to wire through the trunks felt sorry for them but 25 years later they got the chop and still sprouting each year for the last 2
cant put diesel on them as the neighbor shares 1/2 the stumps and objects to nasty things on them so it is just kill my side as well as possible
however a nasty black fungus is eating away at the inside of the trunks so am assisting them in any way i can.

I suppose you can't do much with them, can you? I wonder why they weren't removed when they were cut down?

We couldnt get a stump grinder in that part of the garden Spritz
23 Jan, 2010
Oh, I see. So they remain there - as a feature!
23 Jan, 2010
No Spritz over 20 have rotted away so theses wont be there for much longer and my garden goes around a corner so this area is not seen.

Are they rotting visibly as well?
23 Jan, 2010
Yes If I stuck a fork in them they would probably disintegrate as the others did but they are doing no harm and may be home to allsorts?

I imagine so. :-)

An old trick my father and grandfather used on stumps was to knock in three or four copper nails, it worked.
17 Aug, 2011
Yes I understand copper nails can kill, thankfully the stumps are dead Merewyn but unless removed nothing gets rid till they rot away and now 18 months later 3 more have gone.
