Tasty Veg

The Gardening section of Saturdays Telegraph was discussing how we all tend to grow the same vegetables year after year. That the trend is now to smaller more compact veg for smaller plots or containers. ‘Which Gardening’ had put some new ones through their paces. For those who missed it here is some of their ‘best Buys’
Colander ‘Calypso’ – real cut and come again as it doesn’t bolt, cut 4 times July to September before loss of flavour and 4” pot produced 10 -11 oz of leaf.
Cucumber ‘Iznik’ – more compact so good for containers 26 baby cucumbers per plant.
Runner bean ‘St George’ – tasty heavy cropper, 12 plants 22lbs of beans. Very pretty flowers and considered an improvement on ‘Painted lady’.
Winter squash ‘Autumn Crown’ cross between Crown Prince and a Butternutsquash 4 fruits per plant = 10 lbs.
Sweet corn ‘Miral 003Y’ these are very sweet, the grains have very thin skins so can be eaten raw, also the cobs are shorter 6” but have 100% fill so no end to cut off.

I thought I would try a patio bean wigwam this year Hywel. Someone post a blog on one last year but cannot remember who? I have never grown courgettes Holly as I do not like the texture! yet I love cucumber and marrow.

It's worth growing Runner Beans on a wigwam, takes up very little space, looks attractive in a flower bed, just remember you'll need access all around to pick the crop ! Go on, give it a try. Froze lots too.

many Thanks for this very useful list, drc, for5 smaller plots/containers. Nowadays, we have to grow all our edibles in containers, but it is still a lot of fun to do. :-)

I wouldn't mind trying the runner beans in pots. I don't have much room for vegetables in my ground.
