It may seem funny to ask but which is better?

Does anyone know if you get a better crop of runner beans if you line the trench with Broads sheets or Redtops!
Would I get a last minute flourish with the Racing Post? or a rich crop with the Financial Times? Or perhaps I would get a fatter bean with a broad sheet? I suspect using the sunday papers I might only get a weekly crop?
So perhaps it should be one of the dailies but which one? The Mail might deliver a late crop? The Express might make them bolt? The Daily Star may mean they only crop at night? Heavens The Sun would probably produce topless beans?
Maybe I should stick to the local rag but then I might get stringy beans that would shame the WI? Difficult to know which to use when really all I want is a bumper edition crop?
Last year I used the Daily Telegraph and had beans that caused crosswords at the dinner table! So I might try the gardening press this year bound to yield lots of flowers with good tips!

26 Feb, 2010

lol :o))

Hahaha!!!! I think that "Le Monde" would be good for French beans, but would not use pages with obituary columns, or all you might get would be "has beans".

love all the wit.

Get well soon, Heron! :-)

Brilliant blog...
For lining the runner bean trench I offer you some back issues of the Dog World newspaper... these be trained to follow instructions, will teach your beans to weave around intricate structures and will guard your bean poles from attack...

However steer clear of using wild bird magazines... at certain times of year, the beans get restless and fly off to warmer climes...

Flying beans?? Denise could make a fortune out of growing those as a novelty, Tt. ;-)

Mind you - if she wanted to eat them, she'd need a butterfly net too. LOL.

27 Feb, 2010

Lol. Sh....
Maybe if Denise uses a mix of Doggie newspapers and Wild Bird journals, she can have beans which fly away, but return on command.. ;o)

27 Feb, 2010

Now then she'd be a millionaire! LOL.

Imagine the adverts.......what fun!

Thats a really funny blog, and thank you for sharing the fun. There have been some good comments too. I agree with Piersdad about the manure, but not only free papers. David's was good about the obituary. A lovely bit of fun. Anyway good luck with your beans.
Yes, get well Heron, there's nothing worse than Man Flu'.

You?? Sbg? Even 'arf- Baked????
Thinkin' back to me "obituaries" comment! Known "affectionately, where I lives, as ye"'atches, matches 'n' despatches" forum! Be all means, get yer beans to 'atch. Make sure they match! Cross(boned) matches are as 'ard as gold to find - a match made in Neverland!! 'n' cross-breeedin' might make ye like me mate, Jack (but not o' beanstalk, nor "black pearl" fame). Aye, findin' a new master (or Mr?) Bean? Ye might seem like ye 'atchin' o' a "golden goose" idea. but yon ideas more often end up in ye depatches. If ye really find a real "wanna-bean" (?), drc - don't "broad cast" it, too loudly. "Bean there 'n' dunnit", "Keep a' yer "beans" in one basket! Brill! This post 'as given us a runner for our doubloons!!!! Lol! :-))

Shiver me timbers, David - that pirate hat has gone to your head! (lol).

My friend in Scotland could send you The Daily Record, and your beans could be record breaking.
Not News of the World or Daily Sport - they may cross pollinate.

28 Feb, 2010

'The Times' may be hard David but if my beans are 1/2 as good as your crops I will be even more broad in the beam Lol.
Mad I am aiming for a record crop so will give it a try!

28 Feb, 2010

Hi drc

I think you should line your trences with the sun or the star, knowing how much "manure is in those pages you should get a bumper crop!

12 Mar, 2010

Lol thats sounds as if it might well work Lol

13 Mar, 2010

Lol! Now, I can't even understand my own last comment!! Reads like I were 4 "broad"sheets to the wind, so to speak? Anyways, I hope you don't develop a broad beam - you shoudn't, anyway, if you grow and eat your own, haha!!

Should be easy to "Mirror" our crops (Thank Ye), by getting off to an "Express" start next month. Your runners may, then, well set a "Record".Just don't be tempted to plant them out too early in the month, "Times" of day, or "Sun" may be crucial!
Without wishing to hold up a "daily red rag" to a load of old bull, I'd advise you to avoid the cheap compost, for fear of everything going t..ts uo (I mean, a major "boob"). Have learned by experience. In past years, our beans, planted out too early, ended up "gone with the wind"!!

It turned out you were right about The News of The world Mad!! Might they have tuned in to my garden chat?

13 Jul, 2011

And it seems that even the Sunday Times has toxic properties!
