I think maybe I should delete this pic...
it won't be popular with pond owners ! :o(((
4 Aug, 2010
they are wonderful birds Tt when they fly over they remind me of ptereodactyls and I've been fascinated to watch the tiny swallows case him away from the babies---
4 Aug, 2010
We get one sitting on the bridge and staring into the stream. I suppose there must be tiny fish in there.
4 Aug, 2010
Very majestic looking birds, I love them. There is a Heronry just near us and we often see them around.
4 Aug, 2010
My gardens are in quite a built-up area ... I put this pic on because it's unusual to see such a magnificent bird around the roof tops here ... It did look stunning .. :o)
4 Aug, 2010
They are wonderful in the right place ! we had one that appeared at the same time each evening to steal fish from in our pond at our last house , even a wire round it didn't stop him ......
4 Aug, 2010
Oh, that's a shame, Amy.
I guess someone around my neighbourhood must have a fish pond ...
4 Aug, 2010
Thanks Homebird...
I put a closer pic. of the heron on my blog, but this shows how near the heron was to my garden ... Not a normal sight around here !
4 Aug, 2010
Great photo TT.

Thanks Clarice :o)

Loved your blog and this picture is super, there are two trout fisheries near me and I often see a heron flying by........no doubt en route to one or the other lake, but I can imagine it was quite a suprise to see one in a built up area, you did well to catch the moment :o)

When we went to Chester Zoo some time ago there were herons all around one of the larger ponds. I never realised they were such big birds until I got so close. Only a few feet away.
5 Aug, 2010
Thanks Neena, Sixpence, Linda and Dorjac ...
Yes, I was surprised how big this bird was ...
... and visiting such a built up area !
5 Aug, 2010

Amazing picture!

He's lovely. My son and I love the herons. We used to live by the river and would always see them by the weir. When he was little my son always called him "Mr Heron" and we still call them Mr or Mrs Heron today! Funny !
8 Aug, 2010
i'm not too keen Tt, they give me the creeps, I think its their eyes, prehistoric:-(
8 Aug, 2010
Looks very statuesque -no doubt keeping an eye on your fish to make sure that they don't come to any harm Terra ;-)
8 Aug, 2010

8 Aug, 2010
used to keep koi carp, and dreaded these turning up,very expensive fish to lose!
8 Aug, 2010
I meant to ask is that another heron flying in the sky too Terra?
8 Aug, 2010
Thanks everyone...
Richard ... I don't think that's another heron in the sky.
9 Aug, 2010
Thanks Terra ..just wondered ;-)
9 Aug, 2010
I took the photo very early morning, wearing pyjamas ...standing on a plastic chair in my garden... Lol.
I had just turned my camera off when the heron lifted its wings and flew away slowly.... so I missed the flight shot... another time, I'll stay on the chair however long it takes, to get the action pic :o)
9 Aug, 2010
They've no consideration Terra have they, waiting for you to switch off your camera before flying away..they have got no manners these days.....lol ;-)
9 Aug, 2010
Lol. :o)))

Well spotted Tt great photo. they remind me of prehistoric times,i have been lucky in the past to have had one visit ,my neighbours house that backs on to mine have really really high conifers and one pitchers at the very top of tree,i've never been quick enough to get out there in time with my camera
10 Oct, 2010
LOL, i've have just fell in you (monkey ) good one
10 Oct, 2010
This heron stayed quite a long time...
... unfortunately, I'd just turned off my camera as it flew away, so I didn't get an "air shot"...
13 Oct, 2010
I like the 'pose'!
31 Oct, 2010
Thanks, Jbardet ...
I didn't notice the other bird flying overhead till I had the photo larger on the computer screen !
1 Nov, 2010
That's awesome - looks like a big bird flying above it too
5 Nov, 2010
Yes, it was the "bird event of the year" around here...
the usual local "feathered friends" are sparrows and blackbirds. .Lol.
5 Nov, 2010
What a great photo.
I love herons, they look so pre-historic when they fly, like a pterodactyl. We have a lot in the river behind our house, luckily they don't venture up to my ponds. Very reclusive around here, can't get too close or they fly. I've heard many people complain of them cleaning out their ponds though, they could do some damage on the rubber liners too.
23 Mar, 2011
Hi Rbtp ~ Thanks. :o)
Yes, herons are majestic and wouldn't look out of place in Jurassic Park ..lol...
These huge birds certainly do invade pools and steal the fish...
I don't have a pond .... glad they don't visit yours..
23 Mar, 2011
we've been getting visits from the heron ( Grrrrr) what does seem to deter him is a big childs windmill--any movement spooks him ---
23 Mar, 2011
Fantastic shot TT mind you I would not like it in my garden .
At this time of year I can get pheasants wonder in .
13 Oct, 2011
Hi Pam...
Windmill will keep the herons away on windy days...Lol.
Thanks Scotkat ...
I was pleased to get this pic...
Good luck in photographing the pheasants ! ;o)
