Front Garden in 2014

These days, with it getting quite dark by 4.00 in the afternoon, and the weather being so cold – it’s all very depressing isn’t it,
so in order to brighten things up a bit I have decided to show some photos of how my front garden did last summer.
I can’t find any photos from the spring and early summer … (maybe I didn’t take any)
So these photos were taken from August onwards :-
Here are some views …
The first ones are from early August, when lots of Alyssums were in flower :-
And then later in that month, you should be able to see more annuals flowering :-
I sprinkled the seeds on the garden, and they gave a pleasant show …
Here are some Nigellas :-
And Cornflowers :-
… with Calendulas and Alyssums :-
More Calendulas :-
Later in the year (in Sep) the Livingstone Daisies flowered nicely :o)
… And also the Red Flax :-
Also in September Nigella seed pods developed :-
I always get my best Fuchsia flowers from September onwards,
and in the front, I put several pots of them :-
Some closeups :o)
Jack Shahan :-
La Campanella :-
Anabel :-
Swingtime :-
Carmel Blue :-
Border Queen :-
I’ve also planted some hardy Fuchsias in the front,
however, some have done better than others.
Abbe Farges :-
Cloverdale Pearl :-
Mrs Popple :-
Tom Thumb :-
I hope the other hardy ones will do better next year.
During the autumn, my two new Pyracanthas had some lovely berries, and they are only in their 2nd year :o)
By now, in December, the annual flowers and hardy Fuchsias have finished,
the potted Fuchsias have been taken to their winter quarters,
and the Pyracantha berries are turning brown …
But my Sarcococca has lots of lovely flower buds (no photo of that)
and my Jasminum nudiflorum is flowering nicely, in it’s second year … so I am very pleased :o)
The Nigella seed pods are giving an artistic display :-
My Crocuses are coming up already, and I hope they will look pretty with the mineatur Narcissi and Chinodoxas that I planted there a few weeks ago :o)
The Skimmia Magic Marlot brightens up the front door step :o))
All in all, I don’t think it looks to bad in winter generally, because I have tried to grow a few evergreens there …
It’s not long before the shortest day now, and then after all the ‘festivities’ are over we can look forward to the spring :o)

the pyracantha is lovely and Christmassy!
I'm starting to think I might buy some fuchsias and gesneriads for my houseplant collection. I've not bought anything new for indoors in a very long time. You have a lovely collection of fuchsias and some of them are just breathtaking.

All things bright and beautiful are right here Hywel!
Isn't it strange how quickly we forget how light and sunny those summer days were?
What a huge contrast to the darkness of today, a lovely idea of yours, thank you.

What a lovely blog Hywel. You certainly made a good job with your front garden,I remember when you posted blogs on the start of it.You've certainly got the knack of colour schemes and choices of flowers.I shall take inspiration from you,the Nigella especially, the seed pods after flowering.I take mine off, but after seeing yours, they'll be left on in future!.Your Fucshias are always a joy to see.Happy Christmas to you and Beryl, hope you both are in good health. x

Just what is needed when its so cold outside Hywel, your front looks really attractive, its obvious your plants have all settled well so you must have some good mix in the bed. Pleased to say we do have sunshine here today but the frost is still laying in the shady spots so nothing is tempting me out for long, lol. I'm like you and do get depressed on the dull, dark days..

Lovely blog Hywel. I need cheering up too, I suppose each dark dismal day is one step nearer to Spring, it just seems a long way off doesn't it. Your Tom Thumb looks wonderful against the golden leaved conifer. Does Annabel have very large flowers? If so I have her too:-)

Thanks BA :)

Oh thank you for this blog, Hywel. It has helped to warm me up, despite the awful weather. We all to quickly tend to forget how beautiful everything looked in the summer months. Now I'm counting the months to spring!

What a lovely blog. You really are extending the flowering season in the front garden. Your neighbours must be very pleased to see your beautiful plants as they pass by. It is nice to see an area so safe that you can leave your precious pots of plants where anybody could help themselves, but they are left to flourish. Have a Happy Christmas and a successful gardening year in 2015.
