Even more glazed in !!!

Last year (2013) I wrote a blog called ‘All Glazed In’ where I showed a little covered area outside my back door,
and I’d had the side of it glazed, in order to provide more shelter.
Here are some photos from last year, for you to see how it looked then …
The front, which faces down the garden, was still open, and as a result it was rather a drafty place to sit :-
… so this summer I had it glazed in.
I had a door put there as well, and now there is a nice little space where it is sheltered and we can sit there even when it rains, without feeling cold :o)
It needs painting, but I can’t do it until the spring.
.
Let me in !
Let me out !
Bella is always on the wrong side of the door ;o)
.
My cacti enjoy living there.
It faces north-west and gets the afternoon and evening sun for most of the year.
But now they have to share it with many other plants seeking some winter protection …
so it’s a bit overcrowded at the moment.
Some have flowered this autumn :-
Gymnocalycium mihanovichi :-
I don’t know why it doesn’t open :(
Rhipsalis pilocarpa :-
It grows as an epiphyte on trees, in the tropical rain forests of Brazil … around Rio de Janeiro,
and I understand it is quite rare in the wild now.
Here’s one that isn’t a cactus …
Euphorbia milii :-
… and it is still full of flowers even now :o)
.
In the worst part of the winter, if it gets exceptionally cold, I will bring the cacti and succulents indoors, but they will be fine there as long as we have a normal winter :o)
and then in the spring I am going to put some pots with bulbs there, so that we can see them on wet days :)
Thanks for reading my blog. I hope you like my little outside shelter :o)

Very useful Hywel.....for you and the plants, its nice to have a place to sit in bad weather, I enjoy the clear roof for reading etc.

Hywel that's a job well done although Bella would have appreciated a catflap, I guess you might as well if she's in and out as often as ours are but we cannot fit one as Morgan ends up wearing them, spent a fair bit over the years, decided its a waste of money now, lol, you've not got any room left for your chairs but at least the cacti and other plants will be ok and you can have the room back next year.
Some nice pics Hywel, I really like the one with the white/pinky flowers, its a beauty...

You have been busy Hywel. I like what you have done there . Very useful when the weather turns colder and you can enjoy your plants there year round. Your cactus will appreciate it too. We have Euphorbia milii in our yard here. I like it although it is very prickly. It blooms all the time while we are here...from November to April.
Yours is doing well.

Thats nice Hywel... a nice space for you all to sit, much better than an open doorway... :)

Bella, have you suggested to Hywel that your litter tray could go in there - it would be nice to stay dry on wet days. (I have to go out...but I don't mind using my cat flap.)
Rowan... prrrup!

That's much more practical Hywel - you'll get a lot more pleasure from it like that. I thought you had lost your rhipsalis last year?

Hello, and thanks for all your comments.
Thanks for adding it to Goypedia TT ... :)
Steragram the ones I lost were the Schlumbergeras.
.
=^..^= Rowan and Lincslass, I've got two cat flaps - one from the outside into the conservatory, and another from there into the kitchen ...
but sometimes I like to go in this way.
I never use cat litter. I like to go outside, even when it pours with rain =^..^=

Great Hywel, will be perfect for overwintering plants too
9 Nov, 2014
It looks really good, Hywel. I have a feeling, though, that you and Beryl will be slowly but surely crowded out by the plants! (Only joking...?)
9 Nov, 2014
Thank you both ...
Dawn it is already full of overwintering plants :)
The plants are more important than us Melchisedec ... lol ;o)

wonderful Hywel. Does the lemon flower open at night for pollination by moths? I know many plants do to limit 'damage' from other nectar hunters etc. Might be worth having a nosey late one night :o)
I'd resisted a conservatory for ages and love ours now. much less draughty. :o)

Looks great Hywel sure you ll get lots of use out of it now its enclosed.
Love the Rhipsalis it looks like someone having a bad hair day , very unusual :-)
10 Nov, 2014
A great idea Hywel, and you have those stunning views to look at, also I love that Rhipsalis, so pretty and the Euphorbia, what gorgeous coloured flowers....you have a wonderful collection of plants.

Thanks for all your comments :o)
Seaburngirl, the lemon cactus flower usually opens. It is a lime green colour after it opens - rather unusual.
I think it maybe too late in the year for it to open properly.
Homebird, I've got over 100 different cacti ... :)
Those shelves are quite cheap to buy in places like Poundstretcher etc :o)
Thank you all ... :)

That's going to be so useful, Hywel. I bet you'll wonder how on earth you ever managed without it! Well done.
10 Nov, 2014
Bella - I don't use it either but thought you might. I have never actually seen a litter tray but know that some people have them. =^..^=

That new glass will at least keep the cold wind & rain out during the winter months & will be a nice place during the summer as well.
10 Nov, 2014
Thank you all :o))

A very nice space for everybody. enjoy~

Hi Hywel, Looks like you've been busy. Great space for your plants to be sheltered from the winter weather, and a good space to sit in too. Folding canvas chairs come to mind if it's a sunny day. You have a lovely view across the hills too. Bella will enjoy sitting in their if its sunny in the winter. Our cat enjoys any winter sunshine in our conservatory.
12 Nov, 2014
Thank you both :o)

Hywel
I always think there is nothing better than somewhere to sit out of the cold and draught and still feel you are in the garden is heaven on earth !! Just you Berly ,Bella and the cacti :-)
12 Nov, 2014
Thank you :)

thats such a great idea Hywel...it will make such a difference...your babies all look lovely and cosy...:-)
17 Nov, 2014
Yes they are my babies ... I love them ! lol :D
17 Nov, 2014
Looks a lovely cosy little area now, Hywel. I have always wanted a little conservatory/sun room just where I could sit and watch/photograph the birds. Your plant room would suit me just fine :)
20 Nov, 2014
I hope you can get one sometime Gill :)

Keep hoping Ernie will pull out my premium bonds, Hywel, I've had them since I retired (10 years) but not even a little win yet :(
20 Nov, 2014
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you :)

I'm very late to blogs at the moment Hywel ... but so glad I've seen your handiwork ... here's to many happy hours in there. :o)
21 Nov, 2014
Thanks, Hywel :)
21 Nov, 2014
I am also late Shirley.
By the way it isn't my handiwork - I had someone to do it for me :o)
22 Nov, 2014
I realise that now Hywel ... you did say "I'd had the side of it glazed" ... that'll teach me to read blogs properly! :o)

Hywel - if it does get exceptionally cold it will probably have snowed. If that is the case you may well be surprised at how warm it remains as long as there is snow cover on the roof.
6 Dec, 2014
I hope it doesn't snow. I hate it :(
