I've got an allotment!

Some of you may be aware that I have been on the waiting list for an allotment for quite a few years now.
Well, about three or four days ago a lady rang me up and asked if I was still interested in having one! Now obviously I nearly jumped down the phone to get at it.
Today she rang back and offered me the former chairman’s plot! He, apparently, has become to ill to tend it any more and has resigned. I am assuming that if he was the chairman of the society his plot will be in top condition and not a field covered in weeds or grass.
Can you tell I’m more than a little bit excited?
Has anyone seen on the morning program on TV this morning about a NEW vegetable? It is a cross between a sprout and curly kail. It looks (according to the ‘inventors’) like a triffid with a cabbagey taste. So thats one more veg for kids to push to the side of their plate and turn their nose up at! Lol
I’ll be taking lots of photos on Saturday and will do another blog then but I just had to tell someone!

Congratulations, Ian! :-) Now you will be able to grow vegetables to your heart's content!
A guy at church has offered to let me use some of his allotment if I'm interested. Of course I am! I only worry about my back, I would have to be very careful & probably practise the "no-digging" style of gardening!
As we spoke before Christmas & I haven't seen him in a few weeks there is nothing decided at present. But he is 10 years older than me & is starting to feel his age. He grew nothing but Sunflowers last year on it.

21 Jan, 2010
Hope you have fun with the allotment, Ian, and I will be interested to know what condition 'the chairman' left it in! We grow veggie on part of a friend's garden but I must admit my son in law does most of it as its not near enough to me to get to easily.
21 Jan, 2010
Great news Ian, I`m really pleased for you, hope it`s not too far away from home for you, I`ll look out for your pic`s....
21 Jan, 2010
Thank you all again, We've got the new car and it looks like a hearse!
The new vegetable is called a "flower sprout" and you can read about it at:

23 Jan, 2010
Thanks Ponty! :~))
23 Jan, 2010
Looking forward to seeing your photos, Ian.
What are you going to put in first? I mean when you get around to planting, supposing the plot is in good condition.
23 Jan, 2010
Hi Balcony, the plot seems to be in very good condition and I've done another blog with photos today as a sort of before but you will have to wait for the after ones until I've done something! Lol
23 Jan, 2010
Congratulations Ian.In this day and age we need to go back to the true ethos of "growing your own ".
23 Jan, 2010
I whole heartedly agree Bonkers! There are just to many "food miles" on our plate every day. I for one want to go back to eating "in season" veg.
23 Jan, 2010
Great Ian, late reading this so off to see if you have updated with photo's. :-))
25 Jan, 2010

27 Jan, 2010
Thanks San, I can't wait to get to the planting stage!
27 Jan, 2010
i bet, wont be long i bet :o))
28 Jan, 2010
What are you planning to put in during next month? I suppose you are itching to get started.
I have no idea what to plant in an allotment before Easter!
31 Jan, 2010
Hi Balcony, I have just ordered my onion sets and my potatoes are "chitting" as we speak. (although neither will go into the ground yet!)
I might get some Broad beans in if the weather picks up and I will be looking to get my tomatoes started (either in the greenhouse or on my window sill) by the end of Feb.
You're right of course, there isn't a lot I can get in the ground for a while but all the hard work needs doing first, ie. weeding, setting out the beds and the most important bit, planning where everything will go. I need to get my poly-tunnel set up down there, I've built a compost heap and I need to put up, whatever I decide to use as a growing frame for my beans.
Itching to get started is an understatement, I have been dreaming about having my own allotment every since I could walk. My dad is 85 this year and he still tends two full plots plus his huge back garden and I was brought up with him and his brothers (all six of them) vertually owning the whole allotment site where they lived in Northumberland. I had my own little patch given to me when I was about six or seven and tended it religeously until I was eleven or twelve until a new committee took over and decided that all plot holders had to be over eighteen!
1 Feb, 2010
Thanks, Ian, for sharing your plans. Sounds interesting! I haven't been able to talk again with the guy at church as I missed out several weeks of going as I was coughing very badly for several weeks. At last I've got it "off my chest" so to speak! I've had no coughing since last Monday. I will see if I can talk to him tomorrow about his allotment & his offer to let me have a piece.
6 Feb, 2010
Well good luck with him then. I love having enough space to grow whatever I like without worrying but I guess you understand that better than most? I have bought myself one of those long handles spades (the type you see American grave diggers use!) Apparently they save your back as you can dig without bending! I'm all up for that. Lol
I've got a few more plans in the pipe line but I will save them for another blog.
6 Feb, 2010
Hope you get on well with your new spade! Doesn't seem the type of spade to do digging with on an allotment. I know there are special spades that have a kind of lever on the back & you press it & it turns the spadeful of soil over without you having to bend down.
I did get to speak to the guy at church on Sunday & he says I can still have one of his two allotments. He said he hadn't been down to see them in several months but that he hoped to go down soon & he would give me a call so that we can go down together.
9 Feb, 2010
That sounds like good news Balcony! The guys at the allotments gave me one of those spades to try and it does work well. Being over six foot makes standard spades small to me so this one that I've bought makes digging easier!
10 Feb, 2010
Oh that would be brilliant Balcony.....I hope that works out for you.
Ian.....I knew you wanted the allotment for more than veggies. Now it's become your place to hide the bodies....and you have the spade to prove it.
11 Feb, 2010
Shhhh Gilli, don't tell everyone! ! ! Lol
11 Feb, 2010
Ooops....I already emailed Scotland Yard.
11 Feb, 2010
Darn it Gilli! I told you that in confidence!!!!!
11 Feb, 2010
I didn't realize you were so tall, Ian! I thought you were average height or perhaps a little less, like me. I'm about 5'6".
11 Feb, 2010
I'm 6ft 5" Balcony so you can imagine what standard digging tools do to my back!
11 Feb, 2010
Stretch the Allotment killer!!! Mmmmwwwwaaahahahahah
12 Feb, 2010
Oooo Gilli! It's a good job I can't swim that far! ! !
I would be making room for you in my allotment!
12 Feb, 2010
Well, make sure you install electricity in my spot Ian....so I can make a cuppa. LOL
13 Feb, 2010
All this is scary stuff - I'm not coming anywhere near your lottie, Ian!
13 Feb, 2010
LOLOLOLOL...... :oD
13 Feb, 2010
It's all that Gilli's fault Spritz. Don't take no notice of her. Imagine wanting leckie in an allotment! Tsk.
13 Feb, 2010
Well, if you're going to plant me 6 feet under, of COURSE I want leckie for the kettle. What else will I have to do all day except drink tea?
15 Feb, 2010
Well you could talk to the worms and get them to make sure my soil is in top condition!
