on Sunday here a man was killed in the gardening section of a well know DIY store when a heavy object fell from a shelf and struck him. now i know this was just a freak accident but made me think about some of the dangers of gardening.

always wear goggles or glasses when using a strimmer and please be careful with the electric lead from the strimmer, lawn mower or any other electrical item you may be using in the garden.

i dont think we use as many chemicals as before but we do need to be careful with the ones we do still use.

even the humble gardening fork or rake can be dangerous if not used properly, this is where good footwear comes in.

i myself have tripped over plant pots and been cut by thorns, so many dangers it makes us gardeners a tough breed lol.

happy gardening everyone and in the words of a well known tv show……….

That is so awful, Eileen. I suppose it could happen anywhere, but so sad for his family.

Everyone should also be up on their tetanus shot....
Unlike myself, lol.

It makes you think dosn,t it , some time ago a new DIY store opened in this area , it had a bar at the entrance /exit to let people in and out ...the bar came down on a car within days of the store being opened and killed a young teenage boy who was sitting in the car with his father ...
I can,t think why they needed the bar in the first place , they have been removed since ...

Lots of useful reminders here.
Eileen thanks for the info. :o)

Oh dear Eileen what a tragic accident - makes you wonder doesnt it ? Being in that spot at exactly the time the item fell seconds earlier or later would probably have avoided it .

Things I ve seen and done probably a good day to remind us all as can all do the silliest of things ..

Eye hand and foot protection essential and so right about tetanus Newfie the cuts thorns irritant sap sharp objects etc you only need to strim through unseen dog pooh or worse fox pooh - oh my god you think you ll never get rid of the smell !

Oh the machinery chain saws mowers hedge cutters amazed still got all my fingers and toes ! And ladders ..

omg Amy thats awful, the poor boy's family.
good thinking NF about the tetanus shot,

How sad Eileen. I think its important to be careful with your eyes. In the past, I've been focussed on reaching for something and getting a nasty poke in the eye from a cane or twig.

1 Apr, 2009

ouch, that would be painfull

1 Apr, 2009

I always put one of those little rubber thimble things on the top of garden canes I use in the garden. Even though I wear glasses, it will save me getting poked by the end of the cane if I bend down too close to it

Andrew so do we...but during the night the fox and the badgers come out and I swear they
play with them, because they are all over the garden in the morning.....I must get in touch with Bill Oddie....I can feel a badger watch moment coming on!!!
Thanks for the wise words Irish it pays to be careful.

What an awful thing to happen Eileen. Tragic. When I think of some of the DIY places with things piled on top of shelves 20 feet in the air....its surprising that this hasn't happened sooner.

We do have to be careful in the garden....the one that happened to me this past weekend was the old cartoon image.....you know, the rake laying on the ground with the tines up? Yes, I stupidly did that and even more stupidly didn't watch where I was going and stepped on the tines. Up came the rake and the handle hit me right in the middle of my forehead.....I had a lump the size of a goose egg. 8-(
I had to sit down with a cider to recover!!
My tetanus shot is up to date from when I put a gasket scraper through my hand last year. Tsk....accident prone, that's me.

Andrew, you can also use corks out of wine bottles to top off bamboo canes in the garden. They last forever and are free if you drink wine or know someone who does.

What a tragic accident.
Also be careful of your clothing - last year I had a pair of jeans that were frayed and the hem had come loose. I tripped over it and fell off my front wall. Daft to be up there in the first place !. I had to have 7 stiches in my leg and couldn't walk properly therefore no gardening for a while either :o(

well just look at us lot and all the accidents we have had in the garden, glad all you guys are ok

I think tiredness is to blame for a lot of our accidents. There is just so much pressure to do too much these days and we end up hurting ourselves. Well, that's when I tend to burn/cut myself anyway.

Amy, when that poor young boy died, I felt so awful for him and his family. He used to go to my ds school. And now this poor man. Taking the shops to task is no good, coz it won't bring their lives back, but I do hope this latest accident reminds retailers of their responsibilities. :-(

yes i agree your garden should definatly be somewear to chill out even if your working in it

2 Apr, 2009

3 Apr, 2009

oops think i pressed something and didnt mean to,removed myself from this blog, im not use to this yet sorry

3 Apr, 2009

LOL Sanbaz.....its OK...we've all been there.
Wow, NP.....did she end up with a blood clot or something? Poor woman.
I agree CN. I think tiredness is to blame for a lot of accidents. Tiredness leading to lack of due care and attention. That's what happened with my gasket scraper accident. Inattention for a split second and I'm off to get stitches.

yes she got an embelism

oh my god thats so sad noseypotter, glad we dont know whats in store for us,:(

4 Apr, 2009

Remember to wash your hands before touching any food or teacups (or even a cigarette!). I once had a week of um ... "considerable gastric discomfort" (really painful) ... which the Doc reckoned had been picked up from the garden.

4 Apr, 2009

so am i sanbaz lol not worth worrying what will be will be .i think its better to be at one with the earth dirt and all.i think you can build up a tolerance like that unlike if you stay to clean.im still ok lol

I agree gardening can be dangerous and have gardened since I was 17 now I am 54 but it was nt any gardening stuff that put me in a wheel chair it was a sergeon and pysio so there are dangers every where to watch out for

I tend to agree with you NP...I believe washing is a good thing but it can be overdone..we were told not to use the anti-bacterial soaps in my store because we were all becoming too sterile and we were in for a world of hurt because of that fact. It is too bad about the object falling off the shelf..oh my...those sort of accidents are so shocking. so Wrong..but here is a tale that happened where I lived in southern Washington...a women said she was tired, went uptstairs to her bedroom for a nap, shortly thereafter a small plane crashed in her home, the wing basically skimmed through the roof of the house taking her right out of her bed as is tore the roof of her house off and she was killed...so as I have felt for a long time..never take any second of your life for granted..each one you have is as important as the next..but Gilli..the rake thing...now I cannot believe you did that one!...lol...should have been me!..lol...I have great balance, rarely fall even when I trip and I do that often.Seems if there is only one thing laying anywhere, I "Will" manage to step on it..

12 Jun, 2009

when i was doing my last water feacture i was standing like you do with a walking stick on the lip of the water fall.i nearly fell backwards but just kept my balance.this is a reasen partly for not doing such big things as well as killing me pain wise.it would of definatly bean a life changing or ending accident.made me think.ive now taken up glass painting due with great thanks to amy who i ow a lot for sewing that perticuler seed.take care you cant be over protected but you can certanly be under protected.bye for now

12 Jun, 2009

Yeah, Cat....I couldn't believe I did that either. Tsk!!
I agree about the being too clean thing. To a point. I mean, I wash my hands when I come in from the garden but I don't use the anti-bacterial soap except when I worked in the hospital. If your body never encounters bacteria and viruses then you will never build up any antibodies to them. Then when you do come across them, you end up really ill.

13 Jun, 2009

well its never hurt me and im a bit of a soap dodger lol.the stuff in the garden is called soil not dirt.its what keeps us alive.dirt is whats on your averadge hand rail, breakfast bar,in your nose hence having them hairs to filter it out.money is amazlingly dirty.99.something of all english money and ive no doubt that its the same in a lot of countries has cocaine residue on it believe it or not.

13 Jun, 2009

it was in the papers here a few yrs back that almost every 20 euro note in Ireland has traces of cocaine on it .
your right NP , esp coins. have you ever noticed how grubby your hands are after handling coins .

13 Jun, 2009

I did have to be extra careful while running my store..there is every manner of germ coming thorugh the till on money...I did wash my hands a lot there..was necessary for sure. But not with antibacterial soap..we have good bacteria living on our skin, not a good idea to kill it..never get into the habit of using it in the shower. It can cause lots of skin problems when you kill off your natural good bacteria that way.

13 Jun, 2009

dont mend something that isnt broken ill just have to stay being a scruffy git lol

13 Jun, 2009

Just noticed your blog Eileen I often think of that poor man when I go into B&Q these days - going back to Peteg's comment I think your on to something there - I had a nasty bug the other week and am convinced I got it from the garden - I always scrub my hands after being out but maybe not so good in between when I have my naughty cigarette - thought it was worth mentioning x
