Burton Constable Hall and grounds.

Visited here yesterday with my parents, it was a cooler day, 21 degrees.
I’d never been before, so it was nice to take Mum and Dad. We spent a few hours there, my one disappointment was there wasn’t a walled garden or gardens as such…
It’s a large Elizabethan house, 9 miles from Hull. The park however was designed by Capability Brown. The hall, a Grade 1 listed building has been in the Constable family for over 400 years.
The oldest part of the house to survive dates to the 12th century.
The frontage on the drive up towards the Hall.
The rear, including private family wing.
Loved this seating style with the gold palm tree in the centre.
The family chapel.
The family chapel.
The formal dining room which actually seats many people.
Music area.
An area of the Chinese themed room.
Beautiful blue gown from Edwardian era.
Another blue gown from the Victorian era.
Exercise chair which emulated riding a horse!!!
One of the many, many bedrooms.

I've never heard of that one, I love visiting such places but like you I would be disappointed at the lack of walled gardens to explore, I think they give you a better feeling of the past even if the rest of the grounds are stunning, lovely photo's Kate, thankyou for sharing your visit, now I'm off to research its history...

Like the rhyming, Julia!!! I’m now thinking of other words that rhyme with Kate! Many do! 😁
It was very decadent indeed - apparently the Victorian residents updated/replaced much of the fittings and furnishings with gold coloured decoration. Some rooms were quite gaudy!

Thanks Rose, it really did disappoint me too…when it mentioned ‘grounds’ I presumed there’d be pretty flower gardens or some sort of formal garden at least..
There were several stables and courtyards which had been restored and gave us an insight in to the history there through the centuries, including servants/stable hand quarters etc..
I’m sorry that you and Rick can’t get to these places now, it’s good that you’ve been able to do so in the past. I think gardens do add that finishing touch don’t they!

It is lovely. A beautiful house. There is a sister house of a similar age.
Burton Agnes Hall [owned by the Cunliffe -Listers] is a similar age and has a very nice walled garden. Its on the way to Bridlington.

Many thanks, Sue! Yes, it was an odd one that there were no gardens to speak off..lots of fields and big stretches of lawns and a lot of stables!!!
The tearoom was nice, busy too. The guides were all fantastic! My Dad did ask the oddest questions!
How often are the carpets cleaned and do you wash the bed linen? There was a library and he was interested in the ‘book mite’ management! 😆

Thank you, Klahanie! They did enjoy the visit, we managed to get out and about every day! Despite the fact they’ve seen a lot around here in the past 23 years!

Thanks Eileen, that’s right! I was thinking about Burton Agnes too! Next on the list methinks!
I do like Sewerby Hall too, lovely big orangery and walled garden there.

A very impressive building with many interesting features. Nice to introduce some costumes into the rooms. The music room looks pretty and the dining room looks very grand.
Glad you al had a lovely day out together.

Thank you, Chris! I do like visiting these places and feeling the history involved..
There were a few costumes in some of the rooms, very beautiful too, even the gents.
We thoroughly enjoyed the day!

Lovely to see inside the house Kate, I've passed this quite a few times but never been to it. It does look very beautiful. That is a shame there are no actual gardens to visit though, but a nice treat with your parents.
Yes Burton Agnes Hall is a good day out, very similar to Doddington Hall on the way to Lincoln, both Elizabethan Houses.
Sewerby Hall has a beautiful interior too.

Thanks Janey, pleased you like the pics!
Yes, shame about lack of pretty gardens..
I'm certainly going to try to see more this year, hopefully! Thanks for the tip re. Doddington too!
Hope you are keeping well, Janey x

Doddington is smashing, great food, lovely cafe/restaurant, pretty gardens and the house at Christmas is just stunning..
Aw thank you Kate, had a bit of a rough time, more tests now. Not to worry, all part of the grand tapestry..x

yes Doddington is lovely. Christmas fairs at these houses is always special.
Whilst not as old Sledmere House near Driffield is another excellent Xmas place.

I think Elizabethan facades are glorious. I remember visiting Hardwick Hall and being bowled over by it. I also love looking at historic costumes and these blue ones are stunning!

Oh Janey, I'm sorry to hear you've been going through a pretty tough time. Still having tests too...I do hope you are being looked after and also not having to wait for appointments and results. Thinking of you.
xx

Thanks Eileen, I do like Sledmere too, although it's been many years since we last visited. I've noticed these beautiful places do have a wonderful set up over Christmas. One of the guides mentioned this on Thursday. Definitely something we'll do over the festive period 😊

Ange, snap! I do love a period costume too! I especially liked the Edwardian dress. There were other costumes but this and the other blue were a favourite.
Think we all seem to enjoy these grand homes and Halls, especially if there's athe bonus of a garden!

Thank you Kate..:)
I've never visited Sledmere House that Will be on my list now..x

I love visiting these lovely homes too,Kate, and have never been to this one,or Burton Agnes ,but have passed the latter many times.. It looks beautiful, and I'm sure your parents enjoyed their day out with you.
We have recently been on a a'House and Gardens ' coach tour of North Wales, which was fabulous, but we are fortunate to have so many historic places to visit in our parts of Nothern England, especially belonging to the national Trust.
As you said, the gardens there don't look as inviting as some in the area, but still a lovely day out ..:o) .x

You may like Benningbrough Hall near Wetherby Sandra, beautiful grand country house. Lovely grounds and a very nice courtyard cafe..It makes a great day out. I can't remember if it's NT or not, but worth a visit..
24 Jul, 2022
Thanks Janey. It doesn't take long to get to Wetherby..It sounds good. We aren't members of NT anymore,so I'll check it out.x

What an interesting place Kate!
So many different rooms but not much garden which is a shame!
We don't get round any places like this with Rick being disabled, but I would have been more interested in gardens though!
Thank you for sharing!
