Best Tonic there is...

The past few weeks have been emotional and very hectic, we have been emptying Dads house, a nightmare task as mum and dad had been there since 1951, amongst things to keep were some cacti and plants which I shared with my oldest brother, he had the orchids,( dads pride and joy) plus I cannot keep them alive, I got cacti selection and 2 Yuccas Poor things had been sadly neglected but I`ve repotted a couple and given them a quick shower.. Really lovely outside today so I`ve given myself a treat and had a couple of hours in the garden, pulling out old bedding plants and having a general tidy up, normally a job for Oct/Nov, also started pruning the rose bushes, thats usually a Feb job but lets face it the garden doesn`t know what month it is. Before I went indoors I took a few pics, still the flowers are rewarding me, its great when one compares to last year…
Also washed the nets and cleaned the windows so if it turns cold I`ll be able to admire my handiwork from inside, lol…

I'm pleased you're keeping the cacti (obviously lol)
But what job it is clearing out parents' house. I've still got bags of things to go through from my mother's. Can't get round to doing it.
I'm amazed at the flowers you've got out in January. It's nice to see things haven't died off this year. I don't care if it's unseasonal. It suits me and the plants too :o)

I do sympathise clearing your parents house is really hard, I still have things of my Mother's to go through. Their plants will no doubt respond favourably to your TLC now, isn't it lovely the way gardening can cheer you, especially when there are so many plants still flowering, you are right they don't seem to know what month it is so wont mind a prune before time!
Best wishes for the new year with your adopted plants may they grow well for you x

I do understand Links, as an only child it all fell to me but aunty &uncle helped. You must be warmer than here (2c cooler on this hill than the village) I was only looking yesterday and my hellebores are still buds.

my friend lives in Lincolnshire, and her plants and flowers are the same..much further on than mine..surprising when they are on the coast of the North sea..but apparently, they get more hours of sunshine, than a lot of places..and not as much frost...

I think that is one of the hardest jobs anyone could have, sorting mum and dad's things out.

Lincs such an emotional time for you. Sorting through things like that is never an easy task. Its great that your keeping your dads plants though, as the others said they will be a lovely memory of him. I still have my nans teddy.
You have some fabulous plants still in flower.

My father was a very keen gardener and he was my gardening buddy before he died and I found GoY. I have some plants from his garden where I first learnt about plants. They are wonderful reminders of people and places.

The flowers that you have shared with your brother are beautiful. Please could you name the plant in the first picture , the one pictured in the basket with the yellow ribbon. Sadly I have just lost a dear cousin too. When my brother was clearing out her house he too found a plant like this one but it was all withered and planted in rock hard soil. I took the plant off of my brother's hands. I soaked the root ball overnight then the following day I gently prized the roots from the spent soil. I have replanted and even planted some of the leaf segments as they already had some root growth on them, now the plant has repaid me by bursting into a few lovely blooms. Is it a Christmas Flowering Cactus? The light pinkish red flowers are spikes of about 2 inches long with three rows of petals and long stamens of the same colour tinged like the ends and been dipped in very shallow pale pink paint.Take care Sue, all the problems that you have but you took the time to leave such nice comments on my latest blog. Bless you Sue, my thoughts are with you and your brother. Tom xx

Thankyou Tommy, it is a Christmas Cactus and yes its the one that has the lovely pink flowers on it, I`m hoping it doesn`t upset the poor thing coming to live with me as my own ones never flower for me even though they are very healthy..

I know how it feels to empty your parents home. When Mam died in 2009 we had to empty it (Dad having died 5 years earlier) and they had been there since 1954. So many memories and so much stuff to sort, it's a very emotional time but has to be done. Your pics are great, you've some lovely plants there. X
