I use small, sometimes specialist nurseries for a lot of my perennials and alpines and i thought i’d list my favourites.
It’s always interesting to see what they have instock and their packaging and delivery is good too.

1. Worlds End nursery in Worcester
2. Special Perrenials in Cheshire
3. Chailey Irises in Sussex
4. Viv Marsh Alstromerias in Shropshire
5. Westcountry Nurseries in Devon
6. Pottertons (alpines) in Lincoln
7. Larch Cottage
8. Beth Chatto nursery in Essex

I’ve had bad experiences with Long Acre in Somerset
aswell as GardeningExpress.co.uk

Larch Cottage are expensive but reliable - good plants! I have also had good service from Beth Chatto, but the plants from Westcountry were very small - disappointing.

May I add Beeches Nursery in Essex - great choice and good prices, and Cotswold Garden Flowers in Worcestershire, unusual plants at good prices as well.

I have added your list to my little black book. :o) And Beeches & Cotswold GF from Spritz Ta

They're definately worth having for reference Treeman.
Whenever you're after a certain plant, look it up in those places, compare like for like and you'll find they're good companies to buy from.

I've only visited Beth Chatto Gardens, seen plants in the nursery - looking good and healthy:) Have to write down the rest of your list:)

We were in Essex in May a few years ago and went and had a nosey at Beth Chatto's garden. Her garden centre has one of the best ranges of perennials I have ever seen anywhere. You can imagine us trying to squeeze the acanthus and Onopordum into our hand luggage for our Easyjet flight home :o)

Also had problems with Long Acre in the past, wasn't impressed with the quality of Hellebores, plus they sent me two wrong plants in one order.

I was thinking about a visit to Longacre this year - maybe that would be better, to choose my own plants. It's a long way, though.

Beth Chatto's Nursery - oh yes - it's great to wander around!

Thanks for the information, Louise.

I work for a large garden centre chain but I like to look around independent nurseries where I can. Thanks for the list, I can visit thyem and see what they have to offer. :o)

spritz - if you're planning to visit Longacre, check out Abbey Plants (attached to the garden 'Chiffchaffs' which you will enjoy) which is about half a mile away. I think there should be one day in the week when they're both open.

I'd add Burncoose and Trevena Cross Nurseries in Cornwall and Crug Farm in North Wales. The latter have loads of unusual stuff as the husband and wife owners are plant hunters - got a delivery this morning with really large and healthy plants

Thanks, Andrew. I'll look it up. :-)

Thanks Louise and everyone else - nice to keep for reference. I wish we had a Favourites Blog facility.

I've often wished that too Dawn.

Maybe we should put it to the guys. I suppose the same goes for questions as lots of information can be given in answers.

I've been looking at cannas (Junglejens fault) and came across Jungle Plants on line ( I think no relation of Jens). Has anyone had any dealings with them? They seem to have the most amazing range and I've fallen in love with a few...well several actually. They say they are all in 3ltr pots and range, depending on time when sent between 18inch and 3feet. They are expensive, so am a little apprehensive re ordering and would be grateful for advice. I've recently sent for a standard lagerstroemia, wisteria amethyst falls and magnolia susan from a supplier on Ebay called Plantarama. I'll let you all know how good they are when they arrive:-)

10 Feb, 2010

Yes, do.
It's always good to hear of good/decent suppliers.

10 Feb, 2010

I have bought from Jungle Plants/seeds but only rhizomes~thought they were very good and their catalogue is fantastic!

10 Feb, 2010

Thanks for that Arlene, have you seen their cannas, amazing, but I must only have one or two. How to decide which. Love the stipey leaved orange one, must have that .....and just one more...:-)))))

thanks Louise, I've only ever used Larch Cottage from your list and will have a look at the others. I try to use more notherly nurseries when I can...for obvious reasons...but I think that most parts of the UK have harder winters than us so I'm not sure it really makes that much difference.

Hi louise , Bamboo has recommended Betty Corning clematis to me and I said I was having difficulty in getting one. She said to look for your blog of Internet nurseries. Have you got a favourite site for clematis . I am also looking for Etoile Rose . Thanks :-)

15 Aug, 2011

That's funny Pdb because I am thinking of taking my Betty Corning out! Only because it is rather too successful for the space it's in! Sorry to 'interrupt' Louise, but I get a lot of my clems from www.taylorsclematis.co.uk and have always had great service from them. Thorncroft are also excellent and have a web service. ...www.thorncroftclematis.co.uk ...these are the two main ones I use. Hope this helps :)) Karen

Another good Clematis supplier is these people ....
http://www.clematischoice.co.uk/shop/?gclid=CLDS98Xm1aoCFYgf4QodXAgj8Q

I've bought from them twice now and was very impressed with their packaging, not a single broken stem on plants that were 3.5' tall !

17 Aug, 2011

Yes, I've used them once too...and no problem. :))
