A Private garden in Gloucestershire

Hello all, well it’s 3am and I just had to do something to while away this sleepless night, so I thought i would write a wee blog!
Last Sunday I spent a few hours in the most wonderful garden about half an hour from where we live. The lady who planned and planted this garden used to be a DNA scientist and now spends her time designing and looking after her wonderful and artistic garden. I thought I’d share a few of the photographs which I took.

This first picture is the view from a barn window, across a valley of lush greens and a meadow with a mown pathway through it. Just fabulous view!

Giant thistle

One of the dozens of borders.

These beautiful stone steps lead down to the meadow view

Which was magical.

A bit of a red carpet moment!

And at the top of the red carpet….this view! I think it beats the Baftas!!

This is an amazingly creative Black Bamboo maze. In the middle it has 2 chairs and a table on a disc which reads…‘May your memories never become greater than your dreams’

These next two photos are of one of the pond striking ponds I have ever come across. I have only taken a pictire of half of it because there were children playing who I didn’t know, who I felt should be kept out of web exposure just for their own privacy!

The water is dyed with black pigment, to great effect and I just love the slate.

Yet another border!

And another. Apparently the hedging was grown and styled to represent the rolling hills that surround the property.

Just love this blue….

And love this view, with the mown path leading up into the valley.

And returning to the meadow flowers….

Magical!

On returning home I looked at my rambling garden and wondered if I had not done such a good job! There are pockets which I love and I still have much to learn. But my garden is a cottage and my garden is fairly wild and somewhat disorderly but am sure it reflects my true nature!!
Here is my pot of wild flowers, a gift of a packet of seeds from ireland!

My newest and most favourite flower! i will endevour to go fetch it’s card so I can tell you it’s name but at 3.53am don’t want to disturb the dogs!

The view from my window where I type!

And no Lulu blog complete without a dog…Dear prudence!

Well folks, looking out of the window now it’s pretty dark with just a hint of sunrise and pink blush to the clouds. If I stay awake I may get some foxcub shots! And prudence is fast asleep beside me on the spare bed and her daughter and sister downstairs in their beds, no doubt dreaming of naughty foxes and there very favourite….pheasants!

hey lulu

good idea..next time I can't sleep I will do a blog ..its gotta be better for you than a bottle of voddy ha...

wow..what a garden ( garden seems a tadge weak tbh)

It's amazing , and all the different bits to it ..just jaw dropping ...

I didn't like the red carpet ..only because nature gave this garden all the beauty it needs and mixing it with something man made in that way is not for me..

how dare I criticise ...mine is 30 ft by 20 ...hahaha

Yes, fudgy, the red carpet gave me a bit of a shock too! I came around the corner and Wham! Well I never did get back to sleep, so I went for a 5am walk and posted some photos of sunrise and doggies! (too tired to blog it!)

Aw henny! Beautiful garden..I like the quirkiness of it all..even the red carpet! Waht a bizarre thing to do..I quite liked that..some great shots..lover the meadow.
Your garden..is just fab! Don't change it! I know what you mean about seeing other gardens and thinking you could do better and change your own..but I think it does reflect our personalities a bit..mine is higgeldy piggeldy things where they shouldnt be etc..I'm trying to make a cast of Rick for a statue down beside the shed..not sure if its going to work or not yet lol.
And Dear Prudence..she's a beauty isnt she!
Hope you sleep better tonight..I was awake at 5am today..looks like rain in the sky..maybe thunder..birds are going kind of crazy like they do before a storm..have you noticed that?
Going to look at your sunrise pics now! :)

Thank you so much Lulu . . . wonderful blog! I've added it to favourites immediately! What an artistic design the Glos garden is - is it in the yellow book, or do you have friends like that?! But I also love your wildflower pot, and your "latest favourite flower" - hope you can ID it for us when you're wide awake . . . x

5 Jul, 2011

I think it is in the yellow book, I will have an ask.
Due to my brilliant logging of care cards the other week.....I found the name of that flower!! Agrostemma 'Ocean Pearl' a Corn cockle. I just love it's delicacy.

5 Jul, 2011

Oh, great! I would love to see that garden, I thought it was a private viewing for you lulu!

5 Jul, 2011

Wow, stunning and magical, all these things and more.
Thanks for showing Lulu.

5 Jul, 2011

The Corncockle was from that Special Plant nursery off the A46 SheilaB.
Glad you found it magical Valadel, it really was!

5 Jul, 2011

I enjoyed your blog Lulu. Love Pru too.
That black bamboo is amazing along with the Ligularia przewalskii.

5 Jul, 2011

wow, that's some garden. I loved all of it, but my favourite bits are the meadow and the formal bit at the top of the red carpet.....and...oh, actually, I loved it all.....a lot of money spent there Lulu...most of us can only dream...your garden is cracking! I love it and it's growing too! :)) hope you sleep better tonight my friend x

5 Jul, 2011

Not Derry Watkins' "Special Plants" near Bradford-on-Avon, then?! (you'll just have to make allowances for my geography)!

5 Jul, 2011

What a garden Lou, just fab, love the slate pool, beautiful and the wild flowers gorgeous, but I agree with you, our own gardens are our haven, its nice to see others but we feel 'at home' in our own and obviously have planted it to our own liking and yes they are a reflection of our true feelings. I must tell you we laid a red carpet from our front door down our path on our daughters wedding day, flanked by two box balls at the door, it looked wonderful and she was so suprised, it covered some very old paving slabs that were too expensive to repair!! The carpet was £23! Lovely blog.

5 Jul, 2011

Wooo!! what a blog. just wonderful lulu, especially the poppies in the meadow

5 Jul, 2011

Yet another insomniac ! Well I am reading your blog at 4.20 a.m. lol
It's a lovely garden. Shame it isn't open to the public so that more people could enjoy it. I love the meadow. I think I could go to sleep in it :o)

6 Jul, 2011

What an amazing place! Your pics are brilliant, just loved the meadow flowers, wonderful landscape. Is there any wild life in the pond? Tell Prudence she looks very noble in her pic, Gsp?:-)

6 Jul, 2011

Pru sais thanks, she is a natural and noble pooch, In fact she was looking and listening to a car arriving!
Hywel, a belated good morning to you!! Glad to say I slept like a baby last night and feel very refreshed. I think if anyone had gone near the meadow we would have been in big trouble!! So glad I didn't take a pooch or two or three!
I agree GM, I do love my garden really, I just found this one a bit awesom!
Yes it is Derry watkins at Special Plants!
DawnsAunt is the Ligularia the tall yellow plant?
Yes lots of money spent!! Pots of it Literally!!

6 Jul, 2011

What a lovely idea, Granmage, to give your daughter a red carpet on her special day . . . very imaginative!

Thanks Lulu, you're a star (as is Derry Watkins, lol).

*!

6 Jul, 2011

thanks for this LuLu!
lovely, really lovely, i especially liked the pond and the bamboo maze with the sneaky table n chairs in the middle, the meadow would be a lovely picnic spot, well on the mown path, wouldn't want to disturbe any wildlife nestled in the rest of it!
I think those thisels are bigger than me lol
My phone's been playing up and it hasn't been loading blogs or pic's just say's 'grows on you :ooops' this is the first thing i've been able to see all day and it's brilliant, thanks again! = )

6 Jul, 2011

6 Jul, 2011

6 Jul, 2011

Thanks girls. This has been a very popular garden!!

6 Jul, 2011

Lulu....it's like going into another beautiful world seeing the garden through your camera lens...I love the stone walls and that meadow is so calming and pretty. I can sure understand why your visit to the garden was so enjoyable.

I have the opposite sleep problem these days (I used to be like you and be awake half the night) and find I sleep too late in the morning! At least you say despite being awake in the night you got a good night's sleep the next night and awoke refreshed....ready for a new day :)

Thanks for sharing your lovely photos.

6 Jul, 2011

You are very welcome Whistonlass. I wonder what the owner of the garden would say if she knew I had posted on GoY!!!? I took great care not to show the house!

6 Jul, 2011

Fantastic garden ... the pond is unique and beautiful ... and the stonework and the maze and the meadow ... can you tell I really love this garden? lol! Thanks for sharing it with us. : o ))

7 Jul, 2011

Hi there, love your doggies, some friends have bedlington crosses. Pru says thanks for the hugs, she needs them as her daughter is always beating her up!

7 Jul, 2011

What a lovely private garden Lulu! Lots of original ideas mixed with meadows and traditional borders. Sorry about your sleeping. I can get to sleep but wake up a bit too early sometimes. I read Christo or Beth Chatto as a soother. I'm sure your garden is a delight.....but after a visit to a really special one, it can be unsettling or an inspiration.

8 Jul, 2011
