Wren update 3

The Mr has been very busy again and seems to be taking even more moss in
I dont quite know whats going on, because the Mrs is definately in there, as we have seen her popping out and grabbing insects early morning and going straight back in. Never out more than a couple of seconds. She doesnt leave the Ceanothus….Maybe she has called for more padding….do they do that? does anyone know.?…..
He always warns he’s coming with a loud call and never stays long, just pokes the moss in…..and away……

Mmmm I was thinking that, but is it quite early for eggs? I can't think of any other reason she would not leave the nest though, after all, nobody likes to be housebound!!

Hi Milky this is good news.Watching our sparrows nesting last year often observed the male taking in extra moss (from our cottage roof ) whilst the female was sitting. Not sure but have come to the conclusion it is extra insulation against late frosts ......

Very interesting behaviour! She is probably incubating her eggs. You've noticed the male bringing her moss but have you noticed him bringing her insects? You say she flies out early in the morning & returns with a few insects, might they not be for her own sustenance? She would need more if she had chicks to feed & the male would be going backwards & forwards all day long with food for his brood.
I don't know anything about the nesting habits of Wrens so I don't know if the male alone does all the hunting, for the chicks & the mother, or whether they take it in turns to go looking for food for the chicks.

Perhaps it's the bird version of 'more towels please'! Glad all is still going well in the Wren household. Look forward to next news bulletin @_

Thanks Bonkers for that info..... Balcony...I did mean that she only pops out for a few secs to grab insects for herself....We know there are no chicks yet because the noise would be so loud being right outside the back door They will both be fetching and carrying when the eggs do hatch...Thankyou all......

Hi Milky, Its not uncommon for a male Wren to build up to 10 nests, then Mrs Wren goes round each one until she likes the look of one, not unlike females of the human genus then eh lol.

This is fantastic Maureen. I wonder if she has eggs already and is reluctant to leave the nest? We need BB! With all that moss it must be so snug in there :-)
