DD Rather than try to explain something I'm not too sure about myself, it would be best if you had a look at Ajay's blog called 'goypedia' on 16 Sept which explains it.

3 Feb, 2010
Preeti thanks very much, not sure it will look as good as this again we may have lost a few plants this winter, what with the snow and all this rain :*(((
6 Feb, 2010
It's just a chance to try something new Dd:-))
6 Feb, 2010
Bornagain we are, we are going for the jungle look, having moved from the west mids and the cold winters, the winters here have been very kind to us over the last 7 years, so we though JUNGLE..........and what happened last year and now this year? frost, wet, snow........ our garden room is now full of jungle plants, heaven help us if we have another bad winter...lol
6 Feb, 2010
After seeing Jens gardyn I've been thinking of a few cannas myself I've only got a porch or pretty light frostproof garage though. Can you have them in the house? I bet they'd make lovely houseplants or would they dry out too much? You know what will happen if you change to very hardy frost loving plants don't you....gorgeous summers! Give it a try lol:-))
7 Feb, 2010
Canna's will survive cold weather they just don't like frost so that garage will be fine just put a bit of straw on the top to keep them warm .. I have bought some of my canna's in in October and they were still flowering at x-mas :o))
7 Feb, 2010
Do the leaves stay? :-)
7 Feb, 2010
Bornagain, we are growing frost hardy plants as well, belt and braces!! our garden has been more of a traditional one over the years, so now it is , or will be tropical and traditional.
Mushy we should have bought ours in sooner, they look very sorry for themselves!!
7 Feb, 2010
Bornagain.
If you bring them in then the leaves stay on but they die back if you leave them out...
Unfortunately it has been very cold this winter so may not make it but try bringing them in doors, cut them down to ground level, let them dry for a few weeks then put them somewhere very warm with a plastic bag over them they may come back.
I have done this a couple of times with canna's left outside and they have come back, not all but most. :o)))
8 Feb, 2010
Thanks Mb, I think you have a milder climate than us so I don't think I could risk leaving them out here. Do you have to cut the leaves off even if they look good? Wouldn't it be great if you could have them as a houseplant in winter:-) Dotty, whatever happens tp your plants, I know ,come summer, your garden will look fantastic and I'm looking forward to seeing your pics:-)
8 Feb, 2010
I agree - and me!
8 Feb, 2010
No. look at them and admire them they are wonderful leaves :o)))
8 Feb, 2010
Hi, spot on Mushy, these beauties are far too beautiful to leave to the elements, bring them in and enjoy them!!
Dotty, I'm so jealous of your beautiful Robinia, mine came into bud last Spring...then for no apparent reason, just shrivelled and died. We've removed it now, and it's left a gaping hole. :o(
I too, can't wait to see how your Jungle grows like this year, you've got some fantasic plants there Dotty :o))
9 Feb, 2010
Spritz thanks fingers crossed and everything else as well.......!!
Jen we think the Robinia is a gonner, it was suffering last year, apparently we were not the only ones, large trees were just dieing the RHS did not know why it was happening..... my hubby said it moved (when he pushed it) it will leave, as you said a large hole, what are you going to replace yours with? not sure about having another Robinia, just in case it happens again.
14 Feb, 2010
Oh No...what a shame, has it got any fungal growth on it? When ours got the chop we noticed that it had some weird pink stuff on it, don't know what it was though. :o(
I'm thinking of putting Grandad, our big Tree Fern there until something else has time to grow and fill the gap, maybe an Acer or Gunni, not sure yet...I'm still gutted. :o(((
14 Feb, 2010
Where has the pic gone???
14 Feb, 2010
Bornagain, did you have trouble yesterday with pictures coming and going? I thought it was me, I had just put on a new operating system on my computer, so I was blaming that, thank goodness it wasnt...!!
15 Feb, 2010
Yes there was no picture on your page Dd, which was such a pity. There can be few prettier than this. So glad it's back:-)
15 Feb, 2010
Cheers Bornagain, nice of you to say so.
16 Feb, 2010
What a lovely garden, heavens I've got a long way to go yet.
10 Jul, 2010
Thanks Keasty, we have been gardening a good many years......
10 Jul, 2010
i lost my robinia tree last year, no growth atall was completely gone, i had it 9 years and it was beautiful, i havent replaced it yet but was thinking of replacing with Betula 'jacquemonti', but it is a bit daunting as its such a shame to lose a tree when its been in all those years. We nearly paid someone £60 to take it out for us but luckily when my husband pushed it it was really loose like yours and with a bit of elbow grease came out quite easy, hope the next ones we plant are ok but it seems to a countrywide thing doesnt it, does put you off planting another robinia though x
18 Aug, 2010
Absolutely STUNNING area !
13 Mar, 2012
Daylily just found your comment lol we were discussing what to do as ours again as it looks ropey again, we must have had ours around 9 years now, not sure whether to get another, what did you do in the end? we have just put in a multi stemmed Betula Jacquemonti in another section of the garden, should be trouble free?
Tantita thank you very much. it has changed quite a lot since this pic was taken.......
17 Mar, 2012
Hi Dotty, I got a Betula jacquemontii 'silver shadow' planted November 2010, seems to have settled in ok, but in the last heavy winds a couple of months ago, I thought i had lost it because the winds blew the trampoline into it and it was bent over 90 degrees, luckily it has bent back and i have staked it higher to hold it, when i first saw it i thought it had snapped off!
22 Mar, 2012
Oh dear, you were lucky not to have lost it, they do seem to be quite bendy, looking forward to ours leafing up, should not be too long now. No sign of growth yet on the Robinia, so playing the waiting game again!!
