This year, despite a very cold and unreliable start, our roses seem to have gone mad at the first sign of sun. Zephirine is SO beautifully perfumed, I keep going outside just to inhale deeply. What a shame it doesn't last.

sounds as gorgeous as it looks - and an impressive door for it to grow around. I'll have to check out this plant - *s* love hearing about new plants (new to me, anway) - opens up new areas of knowledge

Oh wow - I have this rose too but it is in a lot more shade, waiting to see if it will flower this year! The doorway is amazing and the rose trellis makes it even more beautiful!

Thank you all - yes, it is our front door. Aren't we lucky? (Not sure about "stately", Sticki). This is the best this rose has ever been. We inherited her 8 years ago, and she must have been there at least 5 years before that. Last year she was neglected disgracefully, and scarcely cut back at all, so maybe that is the secret. We tried planting another on the other side of the door to grow up and meet it over the arch, but after three attempts, we've given up. Sarahm - this is as much sun as she ever gets - 30 minutes in late afternoon and only in early summer. In a week or two, the big fig tree in front of the house will shade it completely, and this is a north facing wall.

It must be because I admired the buds, Gattina, that she's doing so well! Wish I was there to smell the heavenly perfume. Just one word to describe her..gorgeous.

lol Gattina, now there's a job opportunity for you - collect and bottle the perfume ... I'd buy one

Yes, I wish you were, too, Waddy. Oh, life's too short, Fran, and other people have done it better. Nice thought, though.

Oh Carole - how nice to hear from you. I have to tell you, the perfume is so strong, it knocks your socks off every time you go in or out of the door. Maybe you CAN smell them from there!

Hi, Bloomer - how lovely to see on here again; you've been missed. Thank you, too for the birthday wishes - we drove up to Lake Garda for the day as a late celebration, and it's been the most wonderful day of the year so far - beautiful hot sunshine, deep blue skies and roses, roses, roses (and oleanders) in incredible, breathtaking, profuse bloom. It was MOST unfortunate that my blessed camera chose 2 pictures in, to run out of juice. :o(

Thank you,Gattina..what a lovely place to visit for your birthday treat..such a shame your camera ran out of juice..often the way isn't it? Had that happen to me too :o(
You will just have to go again, now you have whetted our appetites with your descriptions of those lovely flowers..:o)

Wow, the perfect Italian entrance Gattina......just stunning.....I should place a garden chair there, just to sit and sniff....:o))

It's sunnier further down the garden, Janey, but the perfume's not the same. Thank you, Chris, it's certainly taken a curtain call this year - still blooming wonderfully. It's quite a challenge keeping up with the deadheading!
