“What are you doing, Dad?”
“I’m feeling a bit peckish you know . . .”
“OK, I’ll have what you’re having(!)”
The baby woodpecker was perfectly capable of pecking for ants, just preferred to be fed. Ah, probably it’s a teenage woodpecker then :)

Thank you Jaykaty! And good to meet another Hertfordshire lady . . . there aren't many of us on GoY.
Thanks Annella - best I could do from the kitchen window!

What a great set of photos! I only see Greater Spotted Woodpeckers here. And I've never managed to snap one.

Same here Melch...see the spotted ones but never the green. It is listed as one of the birds I should spot in the local park and woods, but never a glimpse.

I suppose they are more difficult to see, with their colouring. I occasionally get one at the feeding station, enjoying the fat balls and treats. And it's not too unusual to hear them. That always fascinates me - so fast!

Thank you Mel, and (I think?) Pimm's! They are shy birds, and whizz off squawking if they see you.
Fairly sure it's the Greater Spotteds that you hear hammering . . . but I may be corrected . . .

These are lovely picutes Sheilabub....have never seen a green woodpecker before. I've only seen 1 spotted in my garden once. I have been told though that he usually appears in the morning - when I'm in bed! Typical!!

Great photos & how lucky are you, having them both in your garden.
Always makes me laugh when the babies are the same size as their parents but still want to be fed :-)

Lovely blog and great photos Sheila. They are beautiful birds, I see them quite often at this time of year in my garden looking for ants in the lawn.
