Acers and others (not all large!)

You have some lovely Acers. I have to grow them in pots, well I did for about 10yrs then the foul winter of 2011 killed them. I do have a red leaf one that has its first true leaves. So I am hoping to keep it for a long while.

Lovely Sheila. My Acers are just beginning to break bud now, which is a lovely moment of the Spring isn't it. Emerald Lace is particularly lovely. That one would definitely not survive here. It is far too wind-prone. I find that the ones with the more sturdy leaves do better against frost and wind here. But of course it is the ones I can't grow that I most desire! lol! But we are all human :)

They had hardly any leaf a week ago, Karen, then with all the warmth and sunshine they grew a little more each day. This is my first year with Emerald Lace, but luckily it’s in a sheltered spot - thanks for the tip 🙂.

They are lovely your Acers Sheilabub yes you sure can grow them in pots I ve given my son two which are doing very well thats how I started all mine so yes Janey you can I ve always used ericaceous soil as this is what they like when taking them out the pot when its hoy to big I use to dig a much larger hole in the garden and fill the hole with ericaceous . The fine leaf ones like your emerald green one do not like the winds but the others are fine as long as they are watered. I have two one isfacing south facing but a windy spot the other is facing west I ve had them facing north too and those did ok.

Tree peony is nice too Sheila...and mini garden. Won't it be good when the GC opens again and we can all go and treat ourselves to a lovely new pot! :)

Lovely pics, Sheila. They are a favourite of mine, it’s one thing I can grow and they seem to do well here in East Yorkshire, well in my garden!

Yours really are little beauties! I love the Coral Bark Acer, and Emerald Lace, particularly, such delicate foliage. The two I had, I planted in the garden in the shady side. The thing is sometimes the garden is like a wind tunnel, I think that was the problem and lack of sunlight.

But I can enjoy yours, through the seasons, and all the lovely ones in their autumn colour...:))

Yes, that’s a bonsai in the mini garden - I’ll have to make sure it doesn’t grow too much! I’ll take another photo when it’s a bit more established ... something I’ve always wanted to make, and suddenly I had all the right bits. x

I love your collection of Acers Sheila ... such varied foliage to them. I only have one now, 'Orange Dream', in a pot and have failed, over the years, to keep two dark purple ones growing. Lovely photos ... :o)

Thank you Shirley . . . I do love them, and the fact that their leaves gradually change colour culminating in that incredible blaze in Autumn. Such a shame that you lost your purple ones 🙁.

What a fabulous collection of Acer! I didn't have any luck with them until a couple of years ago when a kind friend on GoY sent me some seeds. I now had a beautiful one, planted in a sheltered spot.

Lovely blog. I love the Coral bark Acer. I'd love to grow one ( in a pot) but I'd be most upset if I lost it to wind or frost.
I seem to lose quite a few plants & they aren't cheap to buy. My Sedum Mr Budd has not come through the winter & the Gaura seems to be struggling a bit, it might pick up a bit when summer comes!

Hope your Gaura succeeds Feverfew.
